It wasn't ever in the top ten but it did make the top twenty in its 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th seasons.

Well i can believe that it was only a top 20 show, i was thinking more like a top 40-i was only a small child at the time Barney Miller was on the air and i truly believe that the show had no viewers under 35

Barney Miller sure had its fans as it won 2 Golden Globes and an Emmy. It was also nominated for an Emmy for Best Comedy every year for the 7 years it aired. It's a classic show now with legions of fans.
As for the target audience, I'd say mid-20s and up. Facts of Life, Different Strokes etc. were for the younger crowd. This was a sophisticated adult comedy that teenagers wouldn't relate to.
I do, however, know young people that enjoy the show now.

I don't get your point. Plenty of adult comedies make it to Number 1 or in the top 10. The fact that it wasn't for younger people has nothing to do what place it had in the ratings. There are plenty of adults in the world that made adult comedies like All in the Family, Cheers and Seinfeld huge hits.

I guess i'm not a fan of that type of show-but i do understand why it's on at 2:30am on TV LAND-not really my type of comedy-thattype of comedy is TOO sophisticated

When i was kid i never like this show but now that i'm older i love this show and i hope tv land keeps it on....It's a funny show:lol:

You're in your mid-20s. If the show hasn't grabbed your interest by now, it most likely never will. Stick to the lighter shows like Happy Days, Facts of Life, Different Strokes, Full House, etc. Those shows are easy to follow and have all the young actors that you like to watch.

Well i will look at it tonight when it comes on TV LAND and see if it holds my interest.

You should know that Barney Miller is one of those shows that has continuing themes--not so much with the storylines, but with the characters. A viewer doesn't have to watch it every night to keep up, but if someone just tunes in, they'll be lost in certain areas.
For example, I was recently confused about Ron Harris' lawsuit. The show would mention it often but not explain it. Another example is Officer Carl Levitt's Medal of Valor. I won't get into the story, but the casual viewer wouldn't know what the references meant.
I'm a new viewer myself and I often wonder what they're talking about. I find that the more I tune in, the easier and more enjoyable it is to watch the show.

I think what the show is about it what always made me not give the show a chance. Which was a bunch of middle age men in a police station. On the flip side-Who wouldn't like three's company, one guy and two girls living together who are in late their 20's-so that is the difference-Barney Miller just had a dull looking cast

The show's over your head kid. Stick with Three's Company--they use small, easy to understand words and have those silly little plots. I don't know why you waste your time posting on a board where you don't like the show.

Well are you a three's company fan? or happy days and laverne and shirley? I post messages for show i don't like to see if someone thinks the show is boring. Another show i just finish watching was Perfect Strangers-now that's worst than Barney Miller

I hate that show Perfect Strangers....That show was BAD!!!!

Your right about perfect strangers being silly but your wrong about barney miller... This was and is a good show... It maybe that you just don't get the show and it's way over your head. Maybe you should just stay with kids shows and keep far away from adult shows.... As i said before when i was kid i hated this show and never got it but now that i'm older it appeal to me and i get it.....Now i love this show..... :)

I'm just into being entertained and BM doesn't fall in the entertainment category in my opinion. Too many dry period during the show and i turned it on and the show just didn't hold my interest-the type of show i like have to be not too silly or too serious-in between like married with children, good times, sanford and son, three's company and the cosby show

You like some good shows...good times, sanford and son, three's company and the cosby show but that married with children i hate that show...... that show is more like for teen:)

The show MWC was the complete opposite of the Cosby show which made the show extremely funny.

That's weird because the creators of Married With Children originally wanted to name their show Not The Cosby Show.

Just want to put my 2 cents worth in here on Barney Miller: It's basically a grown-up show, but like anything, can appeal to anyone.

It's really in the same class as the Bob Newhart Show or Mary Tyler Moore, I feel. These were 1970's shows mainly aimed at grown-ups in urban areas, and mostly had a fairly liberal bent to them. I think the modern day equivalents would be shows like Seinfeld and Frasier.

The target is a totally different audience than Three's Company or Married with Children, Cosby, etc. But to say that it is exclusively for older people or that it is dull is incorrect. I remember seeing this Barney Miller as a kid and really liking it. It's clever, fairly sophisticated stuff, very dialogue driven and not something that's gonna keep you in stitches every minute. It all comes down to personal taste.
