James had a brother that was added to the show during the 4th season and Florida ended up marrying him instead of the Carl Dixon character? I don’t know how I would have felt about that.

I don't think the audience (or Esther Rolle) would have accepted Florida being married to anyone who wasn't James. But I do think adding James' brother or even his father to the cast after John Amos' departure/firing might have helped the show retained the family element that was sorely lacking in the latter seasons.
