View Full Version : What were the best episodes of 'The Fugitive'?
ABlairican Pie 04-01-2023, 11:44 AM There were more than a handful during its run in the 1960's.
Season 1 (September 17, 1963 -- April 21, 1964)
"Fear In a Desert City":
The debut pilot episode establishes Kimble in his quandary of remaining secretive, concealing his identity to escape detection and capture. The hair dye, closed curtains, the alias ("Lincoln", to sell viewers on Kimble's decent nature), the brief job.
Kimble risks his security to intervene in a woman's plight fleeing from a cruel husband. While Gerard makes periodic appearances in the episode, his fear of being confronted by the policemen grilling him over his activities is very tangible. Another distinctive feature is that when Kimble finally discusses his plight and predicament, he finds sympathetic figures who are taken by his kindness and believe in him. Gerard makes his first appearance acting menacingly and obessively, disbelieving Kimble's story of the one-armed man. But questions remain.

ABlairican Pie 04-02-2023, 11:31 AM The next episode, "The Witch", does not touch on Kimble's current flight from the law, yet not only does he become unwittingly implicated in a set of unjust allegations, but he is compelled to help another person falsely accused by vindictive townspeople. In a rural town in the Midwest, a lonely schoolgirl seeks to bring down her "worldly" teacher to avoid punishment for the youngster's misbehavior. Kimble becomes a pawn in this game, where he becomes a hunted suspect.
Scene from "The Witch":
ABlairican Pie 04-02-2023, 11:39 AM Another excellent episode, "Never Wave Goodbye" (Parts 1 and 2), were rather odd in that it was still much too early in the series to introduce a two-part episode. The storyline indicates that Kimble has been on the run for so long that his loneliness is catching up with him and that he needs to settle down at some location eventually. He finds apparent stability on the coast of California where he works as a sailmaker, attracting the affections of a young woman who needs love in her life. While others seem suspicious of this "drifter", news of the arrest of a one-armed man in Los Angeles makes it possible that Kimble can finally stay--if it is the right man.
Kimble travels to the jail in L.A. where unfortunately, Gerard arrives at the same time. This marks the first time both men meet in the series. Kimble flees back up north.
In the second part, with Gerard on the trail following a minor clue, Kimble and his love interest enter a boat race where they plan to throw the lieutenant off by faking their deaths at sea. The episodes demonstrate Gerard's unstoppable desire to catch Kimble at all costs.

ABlairican Pie 04-02-2023, 11:54 AM Scene from "Never Wave Goodbye, Part 2":
GentlemanJim 04-02-2023, 12:17 PM Season 4's "A Clean and Quiet Town" has always been one of my favorites. Not really as it pertains to the central plot of the series, but more for the way Kimble falls into a rabbit hole, he then must deal with.
Other than that, the one where backwoods moonshiners want to kill Gerard, and Kimble must save him, the one where Kurt Russel plays Gerard's son, and "Nobody Loses All the Time" (Joanna Moore) are always fun to watch.
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2023, 09:36 PM "Fatso" was a touching episode where Kimble attempts a reconciliation between a simple-minded man and his family who has ostracized him for a terrible crime. The plot is significant when the man is being interrogated over Kimble's claims of a one-armed man, and fails to convince police. This is one of the first episodes where well-meaning souls attempt to help Kimble with false confessions.
Kimble and Davey "Fatso" Lambert, played by Jack Weston meet in the jail cell where both are incarcerated. Davey is astonished and grateful for having found a friendly cellmate:
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2023, 10:06 PM "Nightmare At Northoak" was a pivotal episode where Kimble and Gerard face off in a jail cell sequence after the fugitive rescues childen from a burning school bus. The terror Kimble experiences in not one, but two dreams, is very tangible, particularly when the dreams become real. But Kimble realizes Gerard may be forced to confront his own doubts and nightmares that Kimble may be right about the one-armed man.
As Kimble rests and recovers from the injury caused by the bus explosion, he remains unaware of the newspaper photo being taken by the son of a policeman:
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2023, 09:43 PM "The Girl From Little Egypt" was the first episode to recall the actual sequence of events leading from the incident of the Kimbles' stillbirth which led to the argument between Kimble and his wife, and ultimately to his encounter with the one-armed man and the murder scene. Kimble is found guilty but escapes the gallows through the train wreck which frees him--for now. Kimble deliriously confesses this to a distraught woman who plows into him in a near-collision.
Kimble drives the car of the girl, played by Pamela Tiffin, whose distraught suicide attempt on the highway landed Kimble in the hospital. In his delirium, he discloses his predicament. Helen Kimble, played by Diane Brewster, is shown in the hospital, about to receive the tragic news of their son. Later, Kimble and Helen argue about the possibility of adoption before Richard storms out. At the trial for his wife's murder, the exultant prosecutor interrogates a neighbor who had heard the Kimble's heated exchange. In the last image, Kimble crawls to safety from the train's wreckage, bound by a severed handcuff.
ABlairican Pie 04-08-2023, 09:25 PM "Home Is the Hunted" is the first episode where Kimble returns to see his family, this time in the face of a medical concern regarding his elderly father. Kimble's sister explains that his brother engages in reckless behavior due to his relationship to his fugitive sibling. Kimble attempts to work out the troubled relationship with his racecar driving brother, whose antics draw the attention of Gerard. This is the only time we see Andrew Prine as brother Ray Kimble, who never is seen again in the series.
Kimble confronts his brother; Kimble meets with his father, played by Robert Keith; Gerard questions Donna, played by Jacqueline Scott:
ABlairican Pie 04-09-2023, 12:23 PM "Come Watch Me Die" was a suspenseful episode where Kimble assists a young man accused of a horrific double murder in rural Nebraska. The family and friends of the victims are bent on meting out harsh justice, though Kimble sees this as circumstantial evidence. Considering he himself was accused before being able to prove himself, Kimble frees the young man--only to find out some very unpleasant surprises are in store.
In a school bus being driven by a local sheriff played by Judson Pratt, Kimble guards the young suspect, played by Robert Doyle, while the vengeful accusers look suspiciously on. Actor Bruce Dern makes one of many appearances on the series in this episode.
ABlairican Pie 04-09-2023, 12:31 PM "Search In a Windy City" is the first episode where we meet the one-armed man. Acting on a tip that his elusive quarry is in Chicago, Kimble contacts a newspaper journalist who guarantees he can find the one-armed man. However, due to his need of a Kimble story, the journalist is rather compromised in his ethics. His schemes attract the attention of Gerard, who conspires to lead Kimble into a trap--as well as delivering a top news article.
Journalist Mike Decker, played by Pat Hingle, attempts to convince his editor that he has proof of the Kimble story lead with the sketch of the one-armed man. Kimble, Decker, and his wife Paula, who serves as Decker's "conscience", anxiously wait for a phone call confirming the connection to the one-armed man--who has already hung up on the missed call. Later, Kimble learns from Paula of the one-armed man's departure, spotting him leave on an outbound bus at the last second.
ABlairican Pie 04-11-2023, 10:12 PM The next two-part episodes, "Angels Travel On Lonely Roads, Parts I and II", touched on the theme of faith and doubt in the midst of trying circumstances. Fleeing from the law in the mountains of Nevada, Kimble encounters a nun travelling with a rickety old car which they both trust, against all odds, to make it to their destination. Kimble, being a "realist", counters the sister's whimsical hopes of "divine providence", until she discloses a terrible secret behind the reason for her journey.
Kimble and Sister Veronica, played by Eileen Heckert, travel through the summits of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Later they are confronted by caretakers of a cabin for trespassing. The leader, played by Rudolfo Hoyos, is taken aback by "one so close to God"--when she finally discloses the truth to Kimble of the intent of her trip.
ABlairican Pie 04-11-2023, 10:17 PM In the second part of "Angels Travel On Lonely Roads", Kimble and the sister encounter several ruffians determined to make their journey difficult for them. One such person is a surly pack station worker who remains suspicious of the both of them, until the police inform them of Kimble's flight from the law. Will it take a miracle to deliver them?
Kimble demonstrates his "scientific bent" by implementing a simple jack with a log to fix a tire, which impresses Sister Veronica. The pack station worker, Chuck Mathers, played by Albert Salmi, remains disgruntled at Kimble's run of "good luck" in his dealings and thinks of him as a sort of con artist--until headlines break of Kimble's wanted status, as he reveals to his sister-in-law, played by Ruta Lee.
ABlairican Pie 04-13-2023, 09:41 PM "The End Game" was an intriguing episode about Kimble being boxed in during a police dragnet and how he managed to escape: While hiding out in a neighborhood house during a door-to-door search, he must contend with two cantankerous old men, one who is convinced of his doubt, and one who subscribes to belief in "reasonable doubt" during the trial. Kimble attempts to convince them to sneak them through the barricades.
One of the old men, Devlin, played by John MacGiver, holds a gun on Kimble, while the other, a more sympathetic figure named Reed, looks on:
ABlairican Pie 04-13-2023, 09:51 PM One crucial episode is "The Girl From Little Egypt" which documents the travails of a suicidal woman who accidentally runs down Kimble on the highway. During his delirium he confesses the flashbacks of the problems of his wife's tragic attempt at birthing their son, the argument leading to his departure, the murder scene and the one-armed man. The flashback concludes with his conviction and escape. Like many sympathetic listeners, the girl believes him and in return, Kimble attempts to help her out of a difficult situation.
ABlairican Pie 05-03-2023, 09:15 PM "World's End" was an episode were Kimble learned the death of his quarry, the one-armed man who killed his wife. The bearer of this bad news offers a way to escape the inevitable, while selfishly harboring secrets of her own.
Kimble meets with Ellen Burnett, a love interest played by Susanne Pleshette, who discloses her plan to get him away from Gerard and the law forever:
ABlairican Pie 05-03-2023, 09:19 PM "Nemesis" offers a glimpse into the personal life of Kimble's foe, Lt. Phil Gerard. When his son wants to become involved in the hunt for his father's quest in the deep woods, he gets more than he bargains for when he occupies a getaway car driven by Kimble himself.
Kimble finds he is in trouble when the stowaway passenger hiding in the back seat announces he is Gerard's son, played by Kurt Russell. Phil Jr. attempts many tricks to contain Kimble for his father and the authorities, while Kimble's compassion leads him to question his guilt:
ABlairican Pie 05-03-2023, 09:24 PM "Escape Into Black" is a pivotal episode when, during the search for the one-armed man in the Midwest. Kimble loses his memory during a diner explosion. Convinced by a doctor that he is guilty of murder, he sets out to atone for his crime when a social worker, who has found the one-armed man, intervenes.
The doctor, played by Ivan Dixon, brings out painful memories of Kimble's last day with Helen, while the social worker, played by Betty Garrett, urges Kimble to flee the police who are on their way.
ABlairican Pie 05-07-2023, 11:31 AM In "Brass Ring", Robert Duvall returns from his first appearance in the two-part "Never Wave Goodbye" where he now plays a bitter quadriplegic man at the center of a conspiracy by his sister and her boyfriend to gain money from him. The sister, played by Angie Dickinson, plays on Kimble's affections to make him "the fall guy" in this plan.
One interesting moment is when police chase Kimble on a revolving musical merry-go-round, which serves as an apt metaphor for his predicament.
Kimble meets Leslie, played by Duvall, as his sister Norma stands by. Leslie has reason to distrust her. Kimble and Norma frolic on the beach, in spite of Leslie's warnings about her:
ABlairican Pie 05-07-2023, 12:59 PM "Nicest Fella You'd Ever Want To Meet" features the return of Pat Hingle, who appeared in "Search In a Windy City", this time a friendly, likeable sheriff who arrests Kimble for hitchhiking in city limits. Kimble discovers the dark side of Sheriff Joe Bob Briggs when he mercilessly runs down prisoner Neely Hollister, played by Tom Skerritt--with the incident seen by Kimble.
Dabney Coleman also makes one of the first of many appearances in the series during this episode as Floyd, the assistant lawman. Dabbs Greer and Burt Mustin also make appearances in the episode.
Neely and Joe Bob drive to the fateful location where Briggs plans his punishment; Joe Bob forces Kimble to pry up a heavy rock at a high canyon park; Floyd and his girlfriend, played by Mary Martin, confront Joe Bob over his dangerous behavior:
ABlairican Pie 05-07-2023, 01:19 PM "Corner Of Hell" was one of the most unique episodes: In this one, an ironic switch was made where Gerard was the accused man in an incident. Kimble flees from a roadblock into a wooded area populated by a community of moonshiners with Gerard in pursuit. Since the local authorities will not deal with this outlaw enclave due to retaliation, Gerard takes it upon himself to bring Kimble in. Since the moonshiners have no respect for the law, they quickly assume Gerard had injured one of the local girls who in fact was accidentally knocked out by one of the locals. Kimble is at a loss to prevent Gerard from a heinous lynching in the name of "justice".
Bruce Dern makes another appearance in this episode.
Bruce Dern's character Cody stops Kimble with a rifle; Moonshiner Tully with his daughter, played by Sharon Farrell, meet with Kimble who has demonstrated skill with treating a wound Cody had suffered;
Gerard remains bound by his captors in a mock "trial" as Kimble asks him what actually happened with the injury to the girl:
ABlairican Pie 05-07-2023, 04:45 PM "The Survivors" is an episode touching on the effects of the loss of Helen Kimble on the lives of Richard's remaining in-laws. As to be expected, Richard Kimble is a persona non gratis to nearly everyone in his deceased wife's family. Yet during a financial crisis, Kimble arrives to help them out. His father-in-law is at first adamant that he leave at once, fearing how Helen's traumatized mother would respond to seeing the source of their misery. But his daughter Terry has a different opinion: In contrast to Kimble's brother Ray showing contempt for what he feels Richard has personally had done to him, Helen's sister looks up to Richard as a figure to be idolized, a "love interest". Kimble must find a way to stay and flee as police close in.
Kimble's father-in-;aw, played by Lloyd Gough, orders him out when Terry, played by Louis Sorrell, begs him to let him stay.
Kimble's mother-in-law, played by Ruth White, who appeared in 'The Other Side Of the Mountain", spends her days in sullen isolation, listening to a recording of her daughter Helen's voice.
ABlairican Pie 05-09-2023, 09:44 PM "May God Have Mercy" was the second episode to feature Telly Savalas as a devastated father whose child allegedly died under Kimble's care. Little do his wife nor anyone else know that Leonetti, who is played by Savalas, carries a terrible secret for his betrayal of Kimble, working in a hospital, to Gerard and the authorities. Kimble, shot in an attempt to escape, must face Gerard while incapacitated. Leonetti confesses some rather incredible statements to the authorities as to the real person behind the murder of Kimble's wife.
Leonetti, played by Savalas, accompanied by his more sensible wife played by Carole Rossen, confer with the police captain played by Norman Fell.
Kimble lies in repose as medical staff examine his condition:
ABlairican Pie 05-10-2023, 09:45 PM "The Old Man Picked a Lemon" was notable for the most despicable villain in an episode of 'The Fugitive'. Ben Piazza plays the son of a lemon grove owner in Southern California who takes over the operation after his father's untimely death in the fields. The father entrusts Kimble to oversee the fields, whom the workers trust, but when his son Blaine takes over, everyone dislikes him immediately after a series of ugly incidents some time before. Celeste Holm plays the widow who is stuck in a no-win situation as Blaine attempts to gain control of the holdings from her, and sees Kimble as a suspicious threat. Blaine's attitude toward everyone is beyond reprehensible as he treats the migrant workers as well as Holm with utter contempt.
Kimble and Holm listen to Blaine's list of legal demands at the grove house:
ABlairican Pie 05-11-2023, 09:54 PM "Wings Of an Angel" which began Season 3, featured Kimble as a patient in a prison hospital after a knifing by an escapee while the doctor attempted to help his female hostage. Two prisoners who recognize him issue a list of demands on a handwritten note: a supply of morphine to be deliivered to them if he does not want them to blow the whistle on their famous patient touted as a hero in their midst. Orderly Mickey Deming, played by future 'Mission: Impossible' actor Greg Morris, offers to assist Kimble in any way possible--as long as it does not interfere with his own parole. Kimble is stuck in a major quandary in regards to his medical ethics and his own need for safety and the chance to escape.
The prison escapee, Robins, orders Kimble to open the emergency door with his hostage, Janet Kegler, played by Lane Bradbury.
Kimble, in the prison hospital ward, is visited by a nurse played by Sue Randall, who made an appearance in 'Nightmare At Northoak' as well as Beaver's teacher Miss Landers. Deming, played by Morris, stands by, aware of Kimble's secret.
ABlairican Pie 05-15-2023, 10:27 PM "Trial By Fire" was an interesting episode where Kimble had found a credible witness who had been present at the night of Helen Kimble's murder. Kimble's sister Donna, along with Burton Green, played by Frank Aleter, urge Kimble to turn himself in now that Captain James Eckhard, played by Charles Aidman, has sacrificed a decent job to testify on Kimble's behalf. His wife, played by Marion Ross of 'Happy Days' fame, remains supportive of her husband. Gerard lurks around the proceedings in court, trying to find weaknesses in Eckhard's testimony. And sure enough, Eckhard harbors a deadly secret which may not help Kimble in the long run if he surrenders.
Kimble meets with Eckhard and his family:
ABlairican Pie 05-17-2023, 09:24 PM One of the finest episodes of 'The Fugitive' was in the form of the third two-parter, "Landscape With Running Figures", where we are given a glimpse once more of Gerard's personal life and its conflicts. Kimble, in one of his moments of extreme weakness, signs his real name in a diner employee login list. This brings the notice of the police, particularly that of Gerard, who happens to be vacationing with his wife at the same time the alert comes in. Driven by duty, Gerard responds to the call, much to the deep chagrin and resentment of his wife Marie, played by Barbara Rush.
Greatly exasperated by her husband's obsession with Kimble, she frantically books a bus out of town in the midst of an evacuation due to threat of flood. She is unaware that Kimble has made his way onto the same bus to escape roadblocks--where he must respond to her injuries in a freak accident which has left her blinded. Neither of them know of the identity of the other while Gerard and police close in.
Kimble tempts children with money who offer him refuge:
Kimble is seen from a confining bird's-eye view of a delapidated laundry with no escape:
Gerard cajoles one of the children into providing information:
Kimble's headline is blasted everywhere, which startles Mrs. Gerard:
A gruff truck driver begrudgingly sympathetic to Kimble, offers him a ride while thinking he is just a drifter, until matters change at a roadblock. In a panic, Kimble speaks in an arbitrary manner at the indignant driver:
After a fateful bus accident, Marie Gerard panics over her sudden blindness. Kimble, attempting to flee, remains compelled to assist her:
ABlairican Pie 05-22-2023, 09:24 PM The second part of 'Landscape With Running Figures' showed the aftermath of the bus accident which brought both Kimble ("Steve Carver") and Marie Gerard ("Mrs. Lindsey") together. Kimble, driven by his need to help a person in desperate medical need, must transport her to the nearest town for treatment. She is desperate to escape the same dragnet of which her obsessive husband takes part, the search for Richard Kimble. But both she and Kimble have arrived in a town evacuated for a flood threat. She notes that her rescuer is kind. But neither is aware of each other's true identity.
The only occupants Kimble and Mrs. Gerard encounter are a trio of hoodlums who rob their truck of a tire. These teens display an unfeeling cruelty toward Kimble's passenger's pllght.
Kimble leads "Mrs Lindsey" to a vacant switchboard in the hopes of receiving a call from an operator. Mrs. Gerard considers this a pandering effort to help a "blind person" in spite of their only hope of contact with the outside world.
While Kimble seeks assistance from the teens in the deserted town, Mrs. Gerard, having made contact with an operator, remains unaware that she is being watched by one of them as she sits in the switchboard room. He begins to taunt and terrorize her.
After Kimble chases the punks away, he and Mrs. Gerard relax in a tavern over a bottle of wine, where they discuss their own particular woes. Kimble remains guarded in revealing much about himself, while she discusses her troubled marriage and the intrusive force which disrupted it. This remains some of the most revealing dialogue in the series. As Kimble reminisces, Mrs. Gerard learns a little too much about the mysterious "Steve Carver".
Mrs. Gerard becomes more anxious and excited as she believes she has discovered "Steve Carver's" true identity, while at the same time trying to not let Kimble know. She pleads with him not to leave her when suddenly the lights come back on as power is restored.
In the switchboard room, Mrs. Gerard finally speaks to her husband on the phone. He is adamant as to why she flees town during an intense dragnet. She begs her husband to rescue her in this vacant town and help her in the midst of her injury.
ABlairican Pie 05-28-2023, 11:26 AM In the remainder of 'Landscape', Kimble picks up the headset device when it calls. To his alarm, he hears the voice of Gerard asking for his wife. So "Mrs. Lindsey's" plan was a trap all along?
Kimble calls her out on this scheme. He announces that he is Richard Kimble, and walks out the door. Mrs. Gerard chases him, warning that she will not let him get away: Kimble is the cause of all of this that has happened to her.
Mrs. Gerard trips and stumbles over objects in her desperate pursuit of Kimble.
He helps her up and tells her to stop. But she remains frantic until she collapses.
At that moment, an ambulance finally arrives to render medical aid to Mrs. Gerard. After answering a police officer about insurance-related questions during the evacuation, Kimble then flees.
At the hospital back in Stafford, Gerard and his wife reunite. Her sight is restored as is their love. We see a human side to Gerard now, who, however, explains that his pursuit of Kimble is important above all else. One day, he tells, he would like to find out about the man who helped her.
ABlairican Pie 06-01-2023, 09:12 PM In 'Stranger In the Mirror', guest actor William Shatner fills a role perfectly made for an actor of his reputation: A policeman put out to pasture due to erratic behavior and stress, comes under suspicion while he harbors hidden demons regarding his dismissal. Kimble becomes aware of certain things while police officers end up mysteriously dead. Norman Fell of 'Three's Company' fame and a guest on a previous 'Fugitive' episode 'May God Have Mercy' makes an appearance.
William Shatner's character Tony Burrell confronts Kimble, now working as a park handyman, about suspicious activities regarding the deaths of several police officers.
Norman Fell, as a police chief Ed Green, asks for assistance from Shatner's wife Carole, played by actress Julie Sommars. Meanwhile, Green interrogates a local hood about the deaths of these officers.
ABlairican Pie 06-02-2023, 09:43 PM "Wife Killer" was one episode where Kimble finally catches up with the one-armed man. A female reporter covering stories of a local crime involving one-armed transients photographs Kimble's wife's murderer in a police station detention yard. When the photo on the front page reaches Kimble, he heads out to investigate.
Kevin McCarthy and the reporter, played by Janice Rule, wait outside the fence for a view of the man suspected of killing Helen Kimble.
The reporter attracts the one-armed man's attention for the photo shot, which makes the paper.
The newspaper headline photo has also attracted the attention of Gerard, believing this will ensnare his elusive quarry.

The one-armed man, panicking while being pursued, speeds and drives recklessly throughout the roads.
One wrong turn sends the one-armed man's car plunging over a high ravine.
Kimble, spotting the plummeting car, races to the bottom of the ravine where the one-armed man has been thrown clear.

The one-armed man awakens at Kimble's suggestion that he has died.
After Kimble asks the one-armed man about killing his wife, his patient nods yes--to which Kimble reacts with relief.
The reporter finds a card with the one-armed man's signature: Fred Johnson.
Kimble treats Johnson as he falls to the floor.
ABlairican Pie 11-19-2023, 01:24 PM Kimble discovers that the reporter has forged Johnson's signature for a typed confession.
After the reporter urges Kimble to flee, Gerard and the reporter's boss, played by Kevin McCarthy, confront her over his whereabouts.
Kimble watches the police close in from high above the camp before running off.
ABlairican Pie 11-19-2023, 01:34 PM Gerard informs the reporter that she is being arrested for aiding and abetting Kimble.
The reporter's boss tells her that he has saved the film roll of Kimble's rescue efforts.
Meanwhile, Johnson assaults a hospital worker upon hearing the police will pay him a visit.
Johnson ducks out, undetected, from the hospital and makes off down the street.
Kimble calls the Stafford Police Department to follow up on Johnson, but, we are told, the call to Gerard will go nowhere.
