Today, we look at when (or if) you folks believe that The Golden Girls “jumped the shark.” (https://web.archive.org/web/20061031125158/http://www.jumptheshark.com/g/goldengirls.htm)

This is “Just Can’t Jump It,” (https://popculturereferences.com/category/just-cant-jump-it/) a feature where we examine shows and whether they “jumped the shark.” Jumped the shark (coined by Jon Hein (http://www.jonhein.com/)) means that the show had a specific point in time where, in retrospect, you realize that show was going downhill from there (even if, in some rare occasions, the show later course-corrected). Not every show DOES jump the shark. Some shows just remain good all the way through. And some shows are terrible all the way through. What we’re looking for are moments where a show that you otherwise enjoyed hit a point where it took a noticeable nose dive after that time and if so, what moment was that?

The Golden Girls was a long-running sitcom about four retired women living as roommates in Miami. It was a critical and commercial smash, and has remained a cultural touchstone for the 1980s.

So first…DID IT JUMP THE SHARK? I am going to say no.

WHEN DID IT JUMP THE SHARK Like all shows, The Golden Girls was not as good in its final season as it was in its early seasons, but it was still pretty much the same show. The SPINOFF that CONTINUED the show as The Golden Palace was bad, but the final season of The Golden Girls was still pretty darn good (alternatively, if you hated The Golden Girls Season 1-3, you’ll also hate the final season, but if you liked Season 1-3, you’ll like the final season).

Great question. As a fan who watched in real time, I would have said never. However looking back its very clear to me that starting with season 5 and "Sick and Tired" two part series, the show jumps the shark IMHO. Season 4 is still good but not as good as the first 3 seasons and we start to see wear on the series. However season 5 moves the show in other directions with writers trying to tackle "in the news topics". Sick and Tired, Not Another Monday, The President's Coming, Accurate Conception, That Old Feeling, Mary Had A Little Lamb, Like the Beep Beep, 72 hours, All Bets are Off.
These episodes all jump the shark in inserting current topics of the day instead of the 4 living together and the daily drama.
We get the 80s Epstein Barr virus, AIDS testing, George Bush education president outrage, teenage pregnancy, gambling addiction, living with a pace maker, and assisted suicide.
I much prefer the girls with their daily lives and funny moments compared to them tackling modern day current trends. Season 3 also begins with Alzheimer disease but the rest of the season is terrific. I much prefer an episode like The Artist where the girls all fight for the attention of an artist then them tackling modern day trends.

Long story short: Season 5 Sick and Tired

As the series goes into season 6 and 7 we get off the rail ridiculous scripts: Sophia stealing the pope's ring, Dorothy falling for Stan again, Sophia contacting Rose's dead husband, Rose's boyfriend in the witness protection program. I always thought the dumbest script was Blanche dumping a guy because he was a pharmacist. A pharmacist makes really good money. Usually Blanch went after guys with money. It just shows the weakness of the writing. We get it was funny that she could not remember his name. But the writers could not bring the script in for a landing.

I was just thinking, were the first two seasons the best when it was focusing just on Dorothy and Sophia? Their relationship was loving with some playful digs at each other. But come Season 3, were they now, all cartoonish caricatures of what they were previously? And did this just worsen as they became more exaggerated and more removed from the original intents?

I love season 3. I think in the later seasons Sophia was just used for smart a** lines instead of a developed character. I say season 5 it starts to get weak

The GG had completely different writers from Season 1-3 and part of Season 4 than the rest of the series.

For me, GG temporarily jumped the shark in Season 6 for one episode - the Cheese Man episode. For me, that was GG stupidest episode. However after that episode I say GG didn't jump the shark, but the later years were definitely weaker.

The later writers I'm not sure even watched GG before.

GG started getting weaker at the start of season 5 with Dorothy's Chronic Fatigue 2 parter. That apparently was based on what Susan Harris (was that her name - GG creator) went through.

I don't know if the show every jumped the shark per se, but I have always thought that there is a distinct split between the first four seasons and the last three. There are some good episodes in seasons 5-7, but IMO those three seasons are weaker than the first four.
