Caroline13 03-23-2023, 01:39 PM Just heard Dick Van Dyke had a single auto crash on PCH in Malibu yesterday...What the Hail is an almost 100 yr old driving an auto on busy highway.....not very smart at all.

I mean from a LEGAL stand point, I don't think we can just pull someone's license at an arbitrary age, for no other reason other than they are 95, or 85 or whatever...
They would have to show to be a hazard on the road. I don't think you can take someone's license for no other reason other than because "they are just really really old"
Who gets to decide what the age is? And what about those at that age who are fine drivers? Do they just have to give up driving?

Agreed. There are many nutty drivers out there, not just the seniors.
Most of the time that person tailgating me is 29, not 79

The only thing annoying about a lot of senior drivers is they drive SLOW lol, it's annoying but usually doesn't cause accidents
I knew of a man who used to drive cross-country from like Main to California once every year, just to prove to himself he could still do it, and he did this tradition well into his 90s.... Until he no longer felt safe doing it due to his eyesight
Bonniegirl 04-02-2023, 03:59 AM As much as I love Dick Van Dyke , he's always been a cool guy and he's a cool old man, aged well. :)But I agree, I really think he is too old to still be driving !
With his kind of money, he certainly could get a good, reliable chauffer to take him around !;)

I agree with this. That old adage about Sunday drivers still applies and it's been around for years. The slow drivers can cause accidents by causing other drivers to do foolish things to get around them. The government around here doesn't help when they create no passing zones on the whole length of roads where they didn't used to be.
I can remember my grandmother drove to church on Sunday morning and to our house for dinner on Sunday evening. That was about it.
Caroline13 04-04-2023, 02:51 PM Reading a little more on the many articles on this Van Dyke auto accident and know that I'm not bad mouthing Van Dyke but I probably would not get in a auto driven by a late 80's yrs of age person...
Wondering why his wife who is half his age was not driving him to a dental appt? Maybe she was just too busy.
The auto involved was a brand new Jaguar and I read that Dick said "he could never understand that damn car"....
I was thinking it was an EV since there are videos of the car on fire. Wonder if there are Jaq EV's???
Just a few more tidbits, if they are true, who knows only the main person.

You have his recent accident confused with an accident he had 10 years earlier. The accident you're referring to occurred in 2013, he was driving a Jaguar that caught fire, according to reports at the time he was unaware of the fact that the car was on fire! He was pulled from the vehicle by motorist who stopped to help. At that point he was 87 and should have stopped driving right then and there.
With regards to the accident that just occurred, he was driving a Lexus, the car skidded in the rain and he crashed into a gate. His wife is 51, married him 10 years ago, and let's face it probably figured she'd be a widow at this point. I think she has been shamed to the point where she has finally taken his car keys away.
biffbronson 04-04-2023, 03:45 PM Once again, EV cars are under attack unfairly. The car that caught fire in 2013 was not EV. Such outright hatred of electric vehicles.

Duster 76,Thanks for the correction on the 2 accidents in recent years.
Looks like this one was more than a "bump" to the car... photos of it here.

One of the things I find noteworthy about you, is how much time you spend participating on a TV centric message board, all the while boasting about how unimportant TV is to you.
Jerry Van Dyke had a sitcom about owning a vintage auto that had a mind of it's own.

BTW, I addressed Torga, GJ...
TV WAS a huge part of my life Mr. GJ, and a friend signed me up here without my knowledge of what the major theme is.... I stayed and have had some FUN and add some of my knowledge here and there and could be some of my knowledge catches on. I like the Games and see you don't participate....
I know you just love me, GJ...
Who would you work on if I were not here????
GentlemanJim 04-05-2023, 01:53 PM Notwithstanding all that, your claims to be a non-TV person seems to have put you at a disadvantage as far as understanding Torgo's comment about DVD's brother's mother.
And, it is rather bizarre the seeming sense of priority you seem to find in bashing TV on a TV centric message board.
Suppose, for instance I started frequenting your beloved "games" section, only to bicker about what a waste of time it is to play internet games that do not have a U.I.........Do you think people might go out of their way to emphasize where any "deficiency" truly was?
That's what I was doing here.....~only trying to help~ lol!
GentlemanJim 04-05-2023, 01:59 PM It's completely fine with me that you disdain television. I've gone through periods during my lifetime where I felt exactly the same way. There is a lot that is not ideal about the medium.
But going to a TV centric community to bash the nominal foundation stone, is certainly "ironic"
Caroline13 04-05-2023, 03:02 PM GJ, I don't disdain TV, putting words in my mouth, huh... I don't need or want TV anymore, so much more that I get from my interesting radio programs........
You can let Torgo's comment go, it was not that important anyway.
Bonniegirl 04-05-2023, 03:10 PM Dick should have borrowed his brother's mother.

I get it !!! " My Mother the car" !! Good one Torgo ! ;)

.
So,should I conclude from that.... when you boast about not "needing or wanting TV anymore", that's really an entry point to inject your preoccupation with fringe radio programming?;)
Caroline13 04-05-2023, 03:41 PM I'm done here, this is about Dick Van Dyke....
rusty spike 04-05-2023, 04:15 PM I don't think there is anything wrong with an elderly person wanting to remain mobility independent so long as they can driving as long as he/she can do safely.
People have accidents when driving.

Just got an idea for a quick poll on the movie board.
