View Full Version : Disappointing so far!
bipinbarr 03-23-2023, 11:20 AM I had hoped the new show would maybe be 25% as good as the original but the laugh track after every sentence of dialogue and the lack of cases before the court (maybe 1 or 2 per episode) holds back on the comedic possibilities. The movie film format instead of the old videotape used before makes the character seem less real. Maybe if they have a guest appearance with Brent Spiner and his wayward unlucky family or Yakov Smirnov might pump in some badly needed momentum to get this thing off the ground. Dan re-entering the dating scene, the judge looking for a new apartment, and Dan trying to save a bench in the hallway from another judge are just going through the motions writing with nothing remotely funny. The original Night Court was so great because the writers and actors did not try to force a joke but let the laughs develop around the happenings during the court docket or outside the courtroom. They have made Dan Fielding a shell of his former self and the other characters are as interesting as a glass of water. I will keep watching in the hopes that it will get better. Reinhold Weege has been a great producer so it is possible. I am not ready to bury it just yet but so far it just has not impresed.

He died in 2012 so he may not be much of a help.
Alan Brady's Hair 03-23-2023, 02:27 PM I've detected a pulse now and then, but it's a faint one. They don't even seem to seize on the Rauch-Larouquette height difference, which you'd think would supply some easy laughs.

Reinhold_Weege 04-23-2023, 05:09 PM This reboot is more like a 1980s soap opera than a 1980s sitcom. I am disappointed.
Alan Brady's Hair 04-23-2023, 05:27 PM They really need a "200 cases by midnight" episode, instead of doing two per episode, just to provide some interest in what might happen.

Yes, what gave the original Night Court its comedic prowess was (1) as you describe, a multitude of wacky plaintiffs and defendants coming before the court or (2) outlandish or outrageous, almost catastrophic overarching situations that impact the entire courthouse. The reboot is entirely missing these elements and it seems like the production team has no clue as to what made the original show so funny.
Chocolate Moose 04-24-2023, 11:34 AM I finally gave up. It's a shame.
MikeLutton 04-24-2023, 11:52 AM they need a new clerk that guy is so boring
bipinbarr 04-24-2023, 11:53 AM I wonder if the actress who played Quon Le, Mac's wife is still alive and available.
rusty spike 04-24-2023, 03:43 PM Might you agree?
The TV scene and culture really changed between 1984 and 1992. The original show featured many zany and wacky personalities with an irreverent sense of humor/ style of comedy. I think part of the problem is that there was a plethora of movies and tv shows that eventually copied/shared that type of humor- think of all those spoof movies like Naked Gun.
My point is that everything that was funny back then has been done and perhaps the writers are aware of this (and trying not to be boycotted because Group A is offended over this and that) so they are writing a very semi-humorous show.
Chocolate Moose 04-25-2023, 11:41 AM I wonder if the actress who played Quon Le, Mac's wife is still alive and available.
Because we loved her so much the first time around? (Sarcasm intended.)
MikeLutton 04-25-2023, 06:20 PM i stil say she married mac for his money
icecream 04-25-2023, 06:33 PM I liked Quon Le, she added to the original.
cpmaz 05-09-2023, 10:35 PM I admit it, I liked Marsha Warfield's appearance at the end of the season finale.
MikeLutton 05-09-2023, 11:00 PM ME Two that was really a surprise i was clapping and everything so un expected
icecream 05-10-2023, 03:02 PM When I heard Roz returned, I assumed it was for more than 20 seconds. The theme song had better not be removed permanently like it was last night. And it is too bad about the break-up, I would have liked Pete Holmes to become a regular. Drop super boring Neil and annoying Olivia for season 2.
Dr. Thong 05-10-2023, 05:04 PM This show is just ehh. Not terrible, but not really that good, either.
The episode where Abby's Mother appeared was actually pretty solid, but for the most part...ehh.
It's something to watch, I guess, but it's not something I eagerly await.
It needs to be more...what's that word they use about some sitcoms?.....oh yeah, funny.
Dr. Thong 05-10-2023, 05:23 PM To be fair, I loved the original show back when it first aired, but in recent years, rewatching the classic show, it's not a show that has held up for me.
And this new version seems to be pretty much following the template for the old show, without offering anything new or different.
sew091472 05-10-2023, 11:25 PM As someone who was a fan of the original Night Court, I gave up after 6 episodes. There just wasn’t much of anything that was funny about the reboot except for joke in the 2nd episode involving The Golden Girls mural on the side of the courtroom.
About the only character that was remotely interesting in the reboot was Dan Fielding’s.
cpmaz 05-16-2023, 09:31 PM To those who are disappointed with the Night Court reboot, just a couple of reminders:
1. Humor has changed over the years. Many shows that were considered to be funny back in the day couldn't be aired now, and many shows that are considered to be funny now wouldn't be back then.
2. The original Night Court changed a lot before it settled on a formula that worked. The only three performers who stayed on through the entire run were Harry Anderson, Richard Moll, and John Larroquette.
Alan Brady's Hair 05-16-2023, 10:16 PM One thing I think is very strange is that they haven't really hit on the Rauch-Larouquette height difference. It's right in front of everyone, they should hit it in every episode.
rusty spike 05-17-2023, 10:30 AM Maybe this show should have been rebooted at a TV drama instead of a comedy since it's not very funny. They could have called it Night Court Law so people would know what to expect.
Edward216 12-05-2023, 05:11 PM Yeah sorry to say it's not very good. It's just dull and boring and trying too hard to be "dramatic" when it's supposed to be funny! I guess I'm somewhat surprised Night Court got renewed but I for one won't be watching the second season.

Just because you're offended by something (that's you in general) that doesn't mean it's not funny!
