Who would u had rather seen Ted Danson with? Diane or Rebecca? I'd say Rebecca cause Kirstie Alley is cuter than Shelley Long. I wanna know why did Ted used to date Whoopi Goldberg's ugly ass?

what an original topic.

Obviously he was a better off with Diane, since he and Rebecca were never officialy an item.

Iwould haveto say Diane by far.

Rebecca and sam had no spark whatsoever. When they had to d o a kissing scene it seemed like it was forced. Absolutely no chemistry.

But Diane, the love scenes seemed more natrural. The smartest and best written scenes took place between Diane and Sam in the office.
Sure The rebecca scenes were sort of funny, but the writing was not as clever.
I think my point is made....

I think Sam and Rebecca were better, cos.... well, they were. And I'm probably going to get shot for this, but sometimes I kinda thought, .... well.... *hack*FrasierandRebeccaweregoodtogether*hack* and *hack*SamandLilithtoo*hack* But that's only in like 2 episodes.

It definitely has to be Sam and Diane. The writing... the acting... the fighting... the proposals... the almost wedding... I think I'm getting through but the point is that only a few of what I just said happened in the Rebecca years. Sam and Diane were first and then came Sam and Rebecca. People like the first things better. Sorry if I'm confusing.

I was watching the 200th episode special last night on N@N and alot of things occured to me. As I said before the better couple by far was Sam and Diane. First of all Sam did love Diane, he was just attracted to Rebecca. I did not see any I love you scene's between Sam and Rebecca.

Sam just saw Rebecca has a challenge, samething with Diane but they had something extra. Sam made passes at Rebecca, tried crazy scemes to get her, but if he failed, no big deal to him. There was no real romance, just lust. With Diane different story, there were so much emotions between Sam and Diane, they drove each other crazy. Example the last scenes in seasons 1, 2, 5. Rebecca could never do anything to get Sam off the wagon, to sale the bar, and buy a boat.

Also during the Rebecca years Sam became more dumb. He wasn't always the smarted person. He was a horny person who would do anything to have fun with a girl. But that is all you see during the Rebecca years. During the Diane years you saw something deeper about the character. You saw a person who was in love with this watress, a person who felt like he was a hasban as a ballplayer, a person who use to have a drinking problem. All the extra stuff about the Sam character disappeared after season 5. He became one dimentenal after that.

Though I prefer to watch the Sam and Rebecca years (Diane/Shelly Long rakes my nerves), I think they would have made a better couple. Only because, though I believe Rebecca were in love with one another, neither were willing to comprise their self centered ways.

I like the episodes with Rebecca better than the ones with Diane, but I think that Sam and Diane made a better couple.

Sam and Diane made a better couple than Sam and Rebecca. First i want to say that Rebecca could have been considered one of Sam's closests friends but they weren't soulmates like Sam and Diane. Sam flirted with Rebecca the way he flirted with every girl he thought was worth while, and he only did it to score with her. The on going Sam flirting with Rebecca thing was simply because same did not get to sleep with her until 3 years into rebecca @ cheers and her knowing Sam. She was a Challenge, a Conquest to Sam. Plus when he finally did sleep with her, he was disappointed, he didn't even brag to the guys (and rebecca sensed that). Although they were good friends they were definately not a good couple if fact i would consider them a bad couple. Sam and Diane on the other hand drove each other crazy how many times while watching them do a scen in the office did you think that Sam was going to just beat her up or even kill her? the same goes for her Sam drove her crazy, they both loved each other, they hated each other, and they hated themselves for loving each other! But she was his one true love and he was her one true love. I mean Sam actually dated her for a Year and then again for about 8 months before almost marrying her. I think that was probably his only relationship that consisted of more than a month or a week or a day (lol). They made great comedy, and made you believe in them. I mean sometimes the chemistry was soooooo great they made me believe there was a Cheers and that these were actual people. without the Sam and Diane Relationship CHEERS WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN CHEERS.

I agree with #1dianechambers fan, i mean now that i think about it......when were Sam and Rebecca a "couple" ? I mean they tried to have a baby together out of friendship...(also they were both desperate) but they were never a couple.

I haven't seen a lot of the later seasons, but I like Sam and Diane better. They just had better chemistry and like people have said on here, they loved each other and Sam's character was better when he was with Diane. Of the ones that I have seen with Rebecca, he seemed to just want to sleep with women and not be in a long relationship like he was with Diane. There relationship was just better.

My wife pretty much refuses to watch Cheers with Rebecca. She hates Woody, doesn't like Cliff and thinks Lilith is the only saving grace for post-Diane Cheers.

Last week I convinced her to watch an episode I thought was funny, from the time when Sam was still trying to get with Rebecca. 2 minutes into the episode she turns to me to say, "My god they have NO chemistry!" In fact they have BAD chemistry, like two miserable people on a blind date.

I think one reason why Sam became a more muted character in later years was to give Danson less to do (often lead actors seek fewer scenes, especially once movies come calling), and to highlight Alley's comedic talents - such as they were - without the inevitable comparisons to Sam/Diane weighing her down.

But jeez once Long left the show, it deflated like an old balloon. It could still be very funny sometimes, but those later years don't hold up very well.

Sam and Diane, ofcoures even the names go together. They had the most dysfunctional relationship ever and they both knew it, but they could not stay away from each other and they both love each other even though Sam could not say it to Diane.

I was a big fan of the first five years of Cheers and after Diane left the show so did I. I would tune in once in a while, but all I ever saw was Sam trying to bed some woman or running after women. It seems like that was all he did after the Diane years. Even when he and Diane were not together he never ran after women like that maybe it was because Diane was still in the picture. Like someone said after Diane left the show Sam got even stupider(is there's such a word) at least when he was with Diane she taught him things and expose him to a new life. Earlier in the show he even tried to impress her with the women he dated.

Even though Diane was more intelligent than Sam they were always in competition with each other he never like when she was right about him in certain situations and vice versa. Those two were a pair and we tuned in ever week to see which turn their relationship was going to go.

What I thought was so interesting was that they relation started with big old drag out fight and ended with one in the 2nd season. I love that show and I have been watching the first 5 years from Feburary and I am still watching it. I watch it over and over again and can't seem to get tired of it. The Sam and Diane years were insatiable.

That statement is right on the money. I felt the same way.
