It seems pretty unlikely, and it would require a perfect coincidence of events — specifically, “everyone wants to watch The last of us‘ and ‘No one wants to see the Oscars — but there’s a small chance HBO’s high-profile video game adaptation will get better ratings (https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2023-02-06/the-last-of-us-hbo-ratings-oscars-grammys) than Sunday’s Oscars. Again, it probably won’t happen… foolish to think it could… but it will bright.
The reason is this The last of us has developed with an upward trend in the last few weeks diversity According to Warner Bros. Discovery, the latest episode was the most-watched yet, drawing 8.1 million viewers as of Sunday night (the previous record for the show was 7.5 million, which it set a few weeks ago). The show still has a lot of momentum and the general public seems to like each episode as much as the last. So who says she won’t always be getting more viewers for episode nine on Sunday night? Also, the next episode is the finale, and if any Episode will be a rating bonanza, that’s it.
The other thing airing this Sunday night is the Academy Awards, which – apart from a small bump in the last year – are down, down, downward. Last year’s Oscars received the second-lowest ratings ever at 13.7 million, with 2021 being the (poor) record holder at 9.8 million. It stands to reason that this year’s event will end in a similar place, without even counting anyone who does had has been watching the Oscars but decides to stick his neck out and see what kind of mushroom dudes Joel and Ellie are hunting that night.
And before you say, “Surely people want to see someone hit someone again,” we have to point out that after reading the wrong Best Picture winner, the 2018 Academy Awards got worse ratings than the year before — that is, the last one Times The Oscars had a major scandal during the show that didn’t result in more viewers the following year. The Oscars have already put together a “crisis team” to make sure nobody else gets hit, which means no one gets hit which means… if you were hoping for someone to get slapped, you should probably just watch The last of us. They’re probably more likely to read the wrong best picture winner again than someone getting a slap in the face, but that’s probably not a good reason to tune in either.
