After having made her film debut as an extra in the science fiction comedy Moon Pilot (1962), Field got her breakout role in television, playing Frances Elizabeth 'Gidget' Lawrence on the sitcom Gidget (1965-1966), which she mentioned during her heartwarming speech.
During her time on stage she confessed acting has never been about attention seeking, 'although it is nice - sometimes,' she added, with hesitancy.
'It has never been about a need to hide myself behind characters of other people,' the two time-Oscar-winner explained. 'Acting to me has always been about finding those few precious moments when I feel totally, utterly, sometimes dangerously alive. So the task has always been to find a way to get to that. To get to the work. To claw myself to it, if necessary.
