Gregory Hines (1946-2003) was born in New York City. Hines began studying tap dancing as a boy, and he and his older brother Maurice began performing together at a young age. The two made a joint Broadway debut in 1954, in the musical The Girl in Pink Tights.

Hines became one of the most famous tap dancers of all time. He and Maurice performed together for nearly two decades, and he later mentored younger tap dancers like Savion Glover. When Hines began getting regular film work, he often found roles that made use of his dance talents.

One of them was Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club. He and Maurice appeared as a pair of tap-dancing brothers, loosely based on the real life Nicholas Brothers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Brothers).

Hines also used his dance talents in films such as White Nights and Tap. He also starred in a number of non-musical films in the 1980s and 1990s. They included the action comedy Running Scared, the Vietnam War era mystery Off Limits, the sci-fi thriller Eve of Destruction, and the crime comedy Good Luck.

Naturally, Hines also found plenty of scope for his talents on Broadway. He won a Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for Jelly’s Last Jam in 1992, and also received a second Tony nomination for choreography for the same production. He was also a Tony nominee, for acting, for the musicals Eubie, Comin’ Uptown, and Sophisticated Ladies.

Hines was a three-time Emmy nominee during the 1980s, for a variety of music/dance special programs. He was nominated for a fourth Emmy for the 2001 TV movie Bojangles. In 1997, he starred in a short-lived CBS sitcom, The Gregory Hines Show (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gregory_Hines_Show). Fans of Will & Grace may remember him as the recurring season 2 and 3 character of Ben Doucette.
