In 2021, I made a video talking about why Disney has so far failed with their handling of the Muppets (don't watch it, it's old and bad) but today we're taking a step back to try and understand why the Henson children sold to Disney (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD1vyqHbgyg) in the first place. Let's take a look at the final classic Muppet movie, that also accidentally doomed the franchise, 1999's Muppets from Space.

When you look at the general picture when The Muppet Show became a hit it not only turned The Muppets into huge superstars they became top celebrities and based on the popularity of The Muppet Show and The Muppets themselves little did we know that movies were gonna follow. And so with the release of The Muppet Movie they knew that they had a hit on their hands and soon with the releases of The Great Muppet Caper and The Muppets Take Manhattan in 1984 those movies were hits but it was actually The Muppets Take Manhattan that was a surprise hit in 1984 and it inspired Muppet Babies based on that movie's cute flashback scene and song I'm Gonna Always Love You. But when it was announced that there was gonna be another Muppets movie made in 1999 I think they knew that this new movie was gonna be a comeback film for The Muppets in the theaters. And so when Muppets From Space debuted in theaters despite being a fun comedy and a return of a new generation of Muppets fans it simply wasn't successful as the other two Muppets movies and at the time another movie that was popular with the younger set was also released with the Sesame Street movie The Adventures Of Elmo In Grouchland and I think that movie did better than Muppets From Space. But why The Muppets movies started to go downhill is ever since Disney got The Muppets they have tried successfully to move The Muppets from theater movies and into TV movies. But ever since the releases of The Muppets movie and The Muppets Most Wanted they have never attempted to release another Muppets movie in theaters since. And that's why you see The Muppets on TV more and even appear in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade intros. But if Muppets From Space had been a hit The Muppets would've been even bigger stars

The loss of Jim Henson in 1990 caused the Muppet franchise and Sesame Street to head into a different direction.
