Bad news from the OTA world. The network that you have all come to know and (sometimes) love as DECADES will cease to exist after the end of this month. The network will be re-branded and re-named and it will soon be called --- are you sitting down? --- Catchy Comedy!:confused:

The new name will also come with a new lineup highlighted by the appearance of the original "Night Court" which has suddenly become a hot item since the new "Night Court" (starring another hot item, Melissa Rauch) became a surprise hit for NBC. The complete new schedule will look like this:

This is great news! Much better than stale MeTV and great to see they got Good Times and Sanford and Son away from Get. I don’t know what the overnight schedule or weekend schedule is though. Hopefully they will still do binge marathons on weekends. But the article did say they would be doing ratings like Me. Hopefully that doesn’t one day make this schedule stale too.

I hope they do another mind-blowing binge like Celebrity Bowling. Seriously, I would like to see one like that again!

Any mention of Bill Kurtis' "Through the Decades" feature, not on the schedule? Hard to believe that dates back to 2015.

I’m kind of surprised about this, and I’ll miss some shows. I did enjoy Through the Decades as well as seeing Dick Cavett shows with guests like The Muppets like the other night. I also did enjoy seeing other shows like dramas on their binges like Remington Steele, but it will be good to see a variety of sitcoms on their binge. I hope Petticoat Junction gets brought back at some point, and seeing Night Court show up is great! I’ll also miss Ed Sullivan!

And 6 shows on the schedule are also on METV- So will the plan be to eventually remove those shows on METV?

I've grown used to the afternoon Dick van Dyke-Dick van Dyke- Bob Newhart session, but you can't have everything and they've been run through quite a few times.

It seems they're following a course that Antenna tried a while ago, female leads at least in the daytime. Very interesting that they're pitting the new shows against probably the most-similar sitcoms extant - All in the Family v. The Jeffersons and Night Court v. Barney Miller.

I don't think I ever watched Through the Decades, Sullivan and Cavett once in a blue moon.

Interesting, looks like they are converting the channel to be a rival for Antenna TV with an all sitcoms lineup.

There's some pros and cons to this change.

Positives:
1. I don't think anybody ever watched Decades for their original news content.
2. This confirms that Weigel acquired other Normal Lear shows and now has a better home airing these shows at better timeslots compared to Get TV.
3. Night Court deserves to air at night instead of the daytime (looking at you LAFF).

Negatives:
1. It seems like the Weekend binges are staying but its only going to be sitcoms. Which means that if we want to see any classic tv show that isn't that genre, we're out of luck. I hope Weigel can air those shows somewhere else. Maybe this channel will open up more space to air other genres besides sitcoms on MeTV
2. This is more so for me. I have DISH and I'm hoping I can get this channel but I never had Decades so it seems unlikely. I have MeTV, H&I, Start TV and Story TV. I use to have MeTV Plus for about 6 months and sadly that was replaced by Story TV.

I find it interesting that they opted to focus on female-lead sitcoms in the daytime hours after the success of Start TV's marketing gimmick.

Farewell Decades!

It would be nice if at 1:30AM-6AM. They can become like old NICK at NITE

1:30AM The Monkees
2AM Mister Ed
2:30AM Car 54, Where Are You?
3AM The Many Loves Of Dobbie Gillis
3:30AM My Three Sons
4AM The Donna Reed Show
4:30AM The Patty Duke Show
5AM-6AM Laugh-In

Catchy Funny Dream Z’s they can call it and hopefully come up with some clever promos like NICK at NITE did & perhaps retromercials. Classic Rewinds.

I don't think they should totally abandon the classic dramas and crime shows. The FBI, Untouchables, 77 Sunset Strip and Hawaiian Eye could probably find an audience in the overnight hours.

Sad about Bill Kurtis's " Through the decades" being taken off, interesting program !:( Also, yeah seems the weekend binges will be less variety , just comedies !

But I like the addition of Rhoda, Laverne & Shirley and Sanford & Son ! ;)

Well Decades morphed from a history based channel to a sitcom one. Remember when it started there were 6 hours of programming repeated 4 times a day. Eventually they started to pull the documentaries for variety and talk shows ( Ed Sullivan and Dick Cavett). Then came Television Aross the Decades with sitcoms and informational bumpers on the decades the shows were from. And lastly they added Smartcoms overnight. The only constants were Through the Decades and the weekend Binge.

I'd like to see Through the Decades offered on a streaming service. I wonder if they made an episode for each day of the year and repeated them from year to year. The only episode I watch was January 31. Which is my birthday. I saw that this year. So I'm not sure if there variations of that day from previous years.

Now all is needed is a better name for the channel. The new one ranks up there with FreeVee.

The Weigel Broadcasting digital network Decades is rebranding (https://tvnewscheck.com/programming/article/weigel-rebands-decades-diginet-as-catchy-comedy/) to Catchy Comedy March 27. With a tagline of “Catch All the Laughs,” the network will feature classic sitcoms.

Daytime during weekdays, it features female-driven comedies, featuring the likes of I Love Lucy, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Carol Burnett Show. On weekday primetime it’s “Norman Lear’s Catchy Classics,” including Good Times, Sanford and Son and All In the Family. Late night, it’s “Smart and Catchy Sitcoms”, including Night Court, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Cheers, Taxi and The Bob Newhart Show.

Each weekend offers “The Catchy Binge,” a different comedy marathon.

“Catchy Comedy is a celebration of the very best in classic television comedy and will showcase and celebrate a who’s who of funny women and TV legends,” Weigel vice chairman Neal Sabin said. “We are excited to bring an all-comedy approach with this exciting rebrand of Decades evolving into Catchy Comedy. Weekdays we will showcase hilarious series with a strong appeal to women, or with female characters that redefined and expanded the role of women in television. Then in primetime we will feature groundbreaking comedy and characters from the legendary Norman Lear, and in late nights we will present some of the smartest and best written comedy series on television. Viewers really will be able to ‘catch all the laughs’ on Catchy Comedy.”

When it comes to all sitcom stations especially retro sitcom stations they are always a huge hit with all ages especially the people in the 55-70 age group. With Decades and METV two of the top retro antenna sitcom channels Decades as well as METV has always been working hard to impress fans over the years by adding sitcoms that everybody can enjoy. With Decades becoming Catchy Comedy March 27th I think that they will copy TV Land and get an even bigger audience that will grow. Because Catchy Comedy or CC as I will refer to Catchy Comedy will be better than ever and here are some sitcoms and other shows that will fit on Catchy Comedy in the future
1. Charles In Charge
2. Make Room For Daddy
3. The Drew Carey Show
4. Dave's World
5. Hazel
6. 227
7. Mama
8. Amen
9. Sanford "Spin-off of Sanford And Son from the 80's
10. Cybil
Catchy Comedy would also have a show called Catchy Comedy's Greatest Commercials which is a show devoted to the funniest commercials of all time. I think Catchy Comedy will be a huge success when it debuts and the name Catchy Comedy is cute as well

Here's another press release which gives you a little more information about Catchy Comedy. The main things to know about the article are:

1. The binges are indeed coming back on the weekends and will be sitcoms only (Yay! No more "Commish"!). They will be known as "The Catchy Binge".

2. The first day of the new network will be Monday March 27.

They're losing Petticoat Junction from the current sitcom schedule, and they've sometimes used WKRP at 12:30 am. Overnight, they have the "Lost Honeymooners", Get Smart, Phil Silvers, Car 54, Dobie Gillis, Abbott and Costello, and Our Miss Brooks. It'll be interesting to see if they keep that intact.

I'm wondering if Bewitched and Jeannie will eventually make it over to Catchy Comedy from Antenna. They seem to be losing their grip on the Sony shows and those have to be two of the most desired for these sub channels owned by MeTV. All I can say is, it wouldn't surprise me. I hope they eventually do an all-rural-sitcom block of shows at some point with Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, and Petticoat Junction. That would be nice, in addition to the return of WKRP would be nice.

But perhaps they didn’t want to box themselves into just classic sitcoms even though it is mostly classic now.

If you can get access to streaming, Decades is on Frndly TV.

Catchy Comedy will compete more directly to Antenna but for viewers, it’s complementary.

Antenna, Rewind and Laff have much better names. I’m surprised Weigel couldn’t come up with something better, maybe metvcoms.

The only show on Laff that crosses over well in interest is Home Improvement. Most of the other sitcoms on Laff are from twenty years later.

Unless you count Fantasy Island which only airs on weekend overnights. Get TV has made the full transition from variety shows like Cher and Norman Lear sitcoms to only action shows like Magnum P.I. Its going to be all action/drama it seems like.

The South Florida market lost Decades about 5 years ago, thanks to apparently some deal between Weigel & the CBS O&O’s like my WFOR, to replace it with StartTV, OTA’s answer to Lifetime. 🙄

The last time I got to view Decades was last summer somewhere near Orlando, where it still can be viewed. IMO the most interesting program had to be the full hour Carol Burnett Shows (which Catchy will retain). I have to assume that all music licensing systems were “go”; however the one I viewed had Jim Nabors singing “The Way of Love,” made popular by Cher. That song IMO doesn’t work well with a male singer.

I will be curious as to whether a full list of affiliates, currently on the Decades site, will grow. If anyone has viewed Miami area OTA TV, we need at least one more classic TV channel, and CC could be entering our area again.

Too bad about Through the Decades though. That show + Decades itself was very ambitious at the start.

I think that (only for myself apparently) Decades’ strong suit was their access to short-lived series episodes. I know I have recorded “Everglades!” and I think I have one ep of “One Happy Family.” I recorded the first two “Bridget Loves Bernie” eps when it was part of a Binge.

I am hoping that CC will devote maybe an hour, or two, or three, a week, to nearly-forgotten sitcoms—just to shake things up. I don’t care if the shows are digitized or not. I have seen Decades’ prints of “The Millionaire”; never restored at all, with scratches/splicings, spots, etc….but they kept running it.

There was a breakfast cereal once with the horrid name “Grins and Smiles and Giggles and Laughs.” Thinking comedy, I wanna break that down.

For the name of the new network:

“Grin” would be out, because it’s too much like Grit.
“Smile”? Nope. TBN has a sub called Smile (for children).
“Laugh”? Nope, because of Laff.
“Giggles”? I say yes. For something truly “Catchy,” call it Gig or Gigg.

My 2¢.

I think "The Partridge Family" would work well on MeTV since Antenna TV only has it on weekends which I think is dumb. They can run it with "The Brady Bunch" and create a "Groovy 70s" block. "The Monkees" would also be a good partner for the show, but, since I'm Canadian and not part of their target audience (100% Americans), I'm sure they won't listen to me like CHCH does when I ask them for shows I want to see. I'm still holding out for "Family Affair" and "Petticoat Junction" to replace either "Matlock" or that stupid "Pictionary". If "Catchy Comedy" can get any of these shows and run them back to back like the others, then I'll begin to watch them too on my KODI app. It's the only way I can get these channels.

Weigel owns both networks, MeTV & Catchy. No reason to move anything. The more, the merrier!

One would think “I Love Lucy” would be on MeTV, and it was, right? Not that ILL is my favorite all time sitcom—but it’s a legend….and yet it’s not easy to come across lately. Catchy won’t cover anywhere near the percentage of households in the US as MeTV. ILL has been a fixture on Decades.

Paramount Plus now has all episodes of ILL. Decades over the air would air all episodes, but Decades on FrndlyTV/Philo would have the limited selection similar to what Paramount Plus had prior to getting all episodes. Not sure if that is still the case.

To me, Laverne & Shirley is somewhat similar of female leads with Laverne's silliness and antics to Lucy's, but L&S can be annoying to me at times. On that note, while Pluto has L&S, I never understood why the premium Paramount Plus doesn't have that show as well.

If CBS/Paramount really wanted to they could get both shows for broadcast and put them on FAVE TV, but they leave the classic shows for Weigel to run.

Unless you count Fantasy Island which only airs on weekend overnights. Get TV has made the full transition from variety shows like Cher and Norman Lear sitcoms to only action shows like Magnum P.I. Its going to be all action/drama it seems like.

I just noticed Cozi's schedule and it no longer has Amen and Gimme A Break. I used to occasionally watch Amen on getTV and remember when Cozi snatched the series away, aired it as of last year, and now it looks dumped. TBH, it never made sense leaving getTV to Cozi and I thought it was just Comcast giving the faux appearance of wanting diversity pairing it with Gimme A Break, shows with black leads on their digital subchannel. But they must have seen the opportunity cost.

Would be great for at least Amen to return to getTV and run it in the mornings again once Good Times leave. If only, they could get 227 from Rewind TV and pair the two together in the AM block.

I finally know what the overnight schedule is, and it's not too dissimilar from the current one.

1:30AM: The Lost Honeymooners
2AM: The Phil Silvers Show
2:30AM: Dobie Gillis
3AM: Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In
4AM: The Best of the Ed Sullivan Show (2 episodes)
5AM: Our Miss Brooks (2 episodes)

I also have the first few Binges:
4/1-4/2: Night Court
4/8-4/9: The Carol Burnett Show
4/15-4/16: Gilligan's Island

Re: The Odd Couple, original,

Paramount Plus has the streaming rights.

For the streaming Decades, Weigel likely passed on The Odd Couple to save costs.

The same might be the case with I Love Lucy still. Paramount Plus recently secured rights for all episodes. Hulu has a handful of episodes. Decades streaming does not carry all episodes, although Decades over the air airs all episodes.

Unless Weigel is serious to keep Catchy Comedy with as much episodes as possible, I expect the streaming version of Catchy to be slightly inferior to the broadcast one since Weigel has to navigate obtaining more license rights.

Does Paramount/Logo have Laverne & Shirley rights on streaming?

Kind of seems silly Weigel won't be airing it. For all intents and purposes, Laverne and Shirley is the big draw for the Catchy Comedy name change. Airing the same shows from the '50s/60's - they might as well keep the name as Decades.

Catchy Comedy sounds like a silly name, Classic Comedy would have been a better choice.

The word "catchy" is kind of old-fashioned. Like my parents or grandparents might have commented on a "catchy tune."

Really an odd choice for a channel name in 2023. Would have even been odd in 1983.

Besides Paramount +, alot of the mentioned sitcoms are streaming on Pluto TV for free. I think Paramount will let them stream the mentioned shows, but they have to pay extra to do it. The shows in question have never done well in the ratings for METV, so they are unwilling to pay the extra costs and will instead substitute a cheap show from the Sony library in it's place.

Instead of wasting time rebranding Decades, they should be trying to work more on restoring and building the METV brand. They could start by making a deal with the non Sinclair broadcast stations to bring METV back into the markets that lost it last year. It also wouldn't be a bad idea for METV to broadcast on Dish Network again.

Making a deal with Universal to get Columbo and McMillan and Wife back on Sunday night would also be a good idea.

I never understood the deal Weigel has/had with Happy Days, MeTV, and Decades.

There was ample opportunity to run Happy Days on Decades, but for some reason all Decades ever showed was the *pilot* for Happy Days (shown on “Love American Style”).

So I wouldn’t be surprised if Catchy cannot show Happy Days either.

Seems odd they wouldn’t air Laverne and Shirley this time because they aired it for the binge weekend recently after Cindy Williams died.

At least with The Odd Couple, a Paramount+ subscription has the series. So if Weigel couldn't secure it for streaming, Paramount's own subscription service has it with a commercial free option.

With Laverne and Shirley, it appears the only streaming venue is the Pluto channel, also owned by Paramount, but the ad streaming service.

I don't see it on Logo's schedule but I think it last was there.

On Pluto TV, one has to endure a lot of commercial breaks and no playback control, episode selection demand, etc.

Laverne & Shirley has much more name recognition today and cultural popularity than Love, American Style and a number of shows on the Catchy Comedy schedule.

I haven't really watched much of Catchy Comedy yet. I did see some of I Love Lucy this morning. My guide still shows Decades, (Gracenote-Neilson does the data for a lot of TV vendors, and it often takes them a few days to update data.) Some comments and questions. Feel free to add your own observations:

1.) The episodes look very clean, or as sharp as can be expected for some of their ages. I think in a lot of instances they are using DVD transfers, with slight edits.

2.) Weigal Broadcasting is the same company that does the content for METV so we will probably get the same prints that are shown on METV.

3.) Considering the political and sensitive content of some shows, how badly will All in the Family and Sanford and Son be edited? It is surprising that these are on the schedule considering the times. Even though these are classics.

4.) The only show that I don't like on the schedule is "The Love Boat." Never watched it, we don't need a big soap opera.

5.) I don't know how much variety they will be able to put into the "Binges." I would rather see the weekends devoted to overnight classics like Mister Ed, Car 54 Where Are You?

6.) The name could be better. Don't promote the station being exclusive to women's comedy. There are shows on there for men too, call the station "Classic Comedy."

It looks like a good channel so far. I’ve checked in on it and seen bits and pieces mostly. I watched an episode of Good Times this afternoon and it was good. I’ve noticed shows that are exclusive to the streaming schedule will not show the logo bug or the content rating.

As far as the Norman Lear shows go, they don’t have any disclaimers. Good Times and Sanford and Son have a plain TV-PG rating and All in the Family has a TV-PG-DL rating just like it does on MeTV.

Actually now that I think of it, when they did the Laverne and Shirley binge in early February right after Cindy Williams passed, I noticed a lot of the episodes did not have the logo bug or the content rating. That means it’s possible the streaming version showed different episodes than the over the air one.

Paramount (Viacom at the time) abandoned the trademark for "HA! The TV Comedy Network" on February 12, 1991, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Nobody currently owns the rights to the "HA!" name in this regard.

I believe that All in the Family is around 25 minutes uncut. I DVR'ed "Archie Gives Blood." and it showed the rare tag sequence before the credits! You have a total of about three minutes missing, but the edits seem to be skillfully done. Not like most syndicates that butcher whole scenes.

What I like about Catchy Comedy and METV are no credit crunches! I think they are doing their best to preserve the content with as few edits as possible, considering the time limits that they have to work with for modern commercial TV today.

The early AITF episodes are 25 to 26 minutes. I haven’t timed the METV edits to compare to the Catchy Comedy edits. I like Gilligan’s Island better in color. It would be nice if they would redo the colorization on Season 1 because it was done back in the early 90s when colorization was something new so the quality wasn’t as good. With today’s technology I’m sure it could be greatly improved on. I’ve been enjoying this binge this weekend.

On Twitter, I tweeted to Catchy Comedy to "Please be like METV, don't crunch the credits of any of your shows." Maybe if enough people do that, they will show full credits! This is a cool new network!

Satch

Unfortunately one thing that Catchy Comedy does that MeTV does is show programs in an odd format between 4x3 and 9x16. The only exception for MeTV is "Toon in with Me". They couldn't run the cartoons in the odd format because that would crop off part of the image for the live action part of the program.

Oddly enough both Sundance TV and IFC does the same odd formatting. I wonder what to connection is with them and MeTV. They also seem to run much of the same shows that the MeTV family of stations run.

Those episodes were colorized when Ted Turner went all out and colorized black and white shows. You're probably right that the technology is much more advanced now so the colors might better match the other season episodes. And yes, I would have liked to see the whole series done in color from the start.

That oddball format works really badly on an old pre-HD cable converter I have. I think MeTV somehow blows up a 4:3 format, side to side. And with that old converter it really screws up the aspect ratio, except on the cartoons. The live-on-tape TIWM segments, apparently produced in HD, look even worse.

Add to your list the Dabl network, another digital sub-channel, which does the same thing. They run mostly old home improvement shows.

The colorized season one was a horrible job. For one thing they probably did not have the true masters, and colorized 16mm syndication prints. And the colors themselves are washed out and drab.

True, some of the colors made it look fake. The sky sometimes looked purple. And Skipper’s shirt was dark navy blue almost black when it was supposed to be regular blue.

Yep, the shirt is really noticeable. And the greenery looks all wrong. It's not like they didn't have color to reference.

So then what is his connection with Sundance TV and IFC TV if any?

My question again is that since Sundance TV and IFC TV seem to run a lot of programs in the same odd video format that the MeTV family of stations run is there a connection beyond same programming? Are they all part of the same company- Weigel Broadcasting?

Something I really would like to see METV do, is fold or rebrand both Catchy Comedy and METV+ into a network that recreates a channel experience similar to Nickelodeon and Nick@Nite back in the 80's/ 90's.

During the day, the channel would be dedicated to classic cartoons from the Hanna Barbera library and kid friendly shows such as Lassie. At night, the channel would convert over to a fun version of METV with promos similar to the original Nick@Nite and classic retro commercials They could also have their own unique takes on classic kid game shows such as Legends Of The Hidden Temple and Double Dare.

The channel could also borrow programming ideas from Cartoon Network in the 90's like Super Chunk (3 hr block spotlighting a certain cartoon) and the Saturday afternoon Super Hero Block.

May binges:

5/6-5/7: Laverne & Shirley
5/14-5/14: The Odd Couple
5/20-5/21: Cheers
5/27-5/28: Bosom Buddies

Weren't the binges supposed to be focused on more obscure series that didn't have enough episodes to be in regular rotation?

"Beyond that, Sabin plans to also sprinkle the weekend binges with some little-seen or short-lived sitcoms that still made an impact on pop culture, like “Square Pegs.”

Give it a chance. They are probably trying to build an audience. At some point the rare shows may turn up. I'm guessing in the summer when viewership in normally done. Not much to lose in advertising. Just my thought.

In case you missed them, my daily binges begin on Page 10 of My Fantasy Channel. (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=428146&page=10) I explain how these binges are going to work. Every day, I will spotlight one series and continue from A-Z until the fall season begins. On weekends, I will have a separate A-Z group of classic cartoons. This is what I will include in each playlist.

1. PILOTS

The first and last episodes of each series, including unaired pilot episodes.

2. TOP 10 EPISODES

The best of the best as chosen by the show's fans on IMDB.com, one of the top online sites for movie and TV info.

3. MY FAVORITE EPISODE

My favorite episode of the series shown in the listings in bold which may or may not be part of the top 10. A few sitcoms may have more than one on my list. Others won't have any. That's too bad for them!

4. RANDOM EPISODES

10 more episodes of the series which will be chosen at random.

5. TV TIME WARP

Other shows which debuted during the same year as the featured sitcom.

Coming up this week, I have the following:

Monday - Car 54, Where Are You?
Tuesday - Cheers
Wednesday - Coach
Thursday - Cosby Show
Friday - Father's Day Special
Saturday - Daffy Duck
Sunday - Donald Duck

Monday June 19 - December Bride
Tuesday June 20 - Dennis The Menace
Wednesday June 21 - The Dick Van Dyke Show
Thursday June 22 - Diff'rent Strokes
Friday June 23 - The Donna Reed Show
Saturday June 24 - Felix The Cat
Sunday June 25 - The Flintstones

Like to see some one season comedy shows, comedy summer replacement shows, comedy episodes from anthology series, unsold comedy pilots, and Made for TV movie comedies. Right now all we're seeing are the comedy offerings that were always shown on the Decades Binge. It would be great if Catchy would do what NICK at NITE did and introduce that week a Classic tv rerun countdown Airring December 26 Tuesday thru New Year’s Eve from 7pm-12:30AM and again from 12:30AM-5AM. With the number 1 show airring at midnight on Jan 1st and gets an entire binge day for New Year’s Day!

I forgot about antenna TV doing something like that. You idea mimicking Nick at Night would do well.

How about a "Just Visiting" weekend binge. Where one actor is featured and episodes of shows they either starred or guest starred it would run for the weekend. I could see actors like Bernie Kopell, Alan Melvin, Bea Benaderet, and Burt Mustin could have their own Binge Weekend.

Who else would have enough appearances to justify a Binge Weekend?

Both Parley Baer, and Lyle Talbot guest on a ton of shows as well as spending a lot of time on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.

It's because certain shows have right issues for streaming, so when Decades had WKRP, another show replaced it in streaming.
For example, Laverne & Shirley, which airs at 2pm ET every weekday, over-the-air viewers would see them, while on streaming, Love American Style airs instead.

You're probably right. We'll probably find out early next week.

And it's officially true.
Catchy Comedy will have a tribute to Richard Moll with a special Night Court weekend binge this weekend.
It'll replace The Lucy Show Catchy Binge.

The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast could never have been done now. Such inappropriate stuff. Especially regarding race. If you watch check out how many of the African American celebrities actually base their joke on their race. Many shows of that era did the same.
Look up Legends of the Superheros on Tubi. Really wrong race jokes there. And that was done in 1979!
