View Full Version : Have you ever had your thread badly hijacked? :/ Spoiler alert about certain movie.
Janice Johnson 02-12-2023, 12:51 AM So, on the old IMDb Messageboards, on the Orphan Board, I started a thread called,"Kate was a B!" I was like,"Kate killed Esther when she said,"Please Mommy, don't let me die!" She kicked Esther in her neck causing her to break her neck and drown in the icy water! What a B Kate was! :mad:The very first response was on topic and said something like,"Kate wasn't a B at all. Esther was a grown 33 year old Woman who was posing as a 9 year old child and tricked the Coleman's into adopting her, killed Kate's Husband John, tried to kill Daniel three times who was Kate's only Son, and tried to kill Max, who was Kate's only Daughter, and tried to kill Kate too! Besides, Esther had a knife hidden behind her back (I didn't know Esther had a knife hidden behind her back until the Poster pointed it out)and would have stabbed Kate had Kate showed her any sympathy and tried to help her out. Kate did the right thing. "
My on topic Thread soon turned into a mini chat room suddenly!:confused: People were meeting up on my on topic Thread to chat randomly!:confused: At least a Poster was like,"We turned Janice's on topic Thread about Orphan and hijacked it into being a mini chat room. Janice did not deserve her on topic Thread about Orphan being hijacked into being a mini chat room. We shouldn't have done that. I apologize for this on topic Thread being turned into a mini chat room." Other Posters were like,"Yeah, you're right. We shouldn't have hijacked Janice's on topic Thread about Orphan and turned it into a mini chat room. " The hijacking stopped.
GentlemanJim 02-12-2023, 01:17 AM What I have found is, the people who are most likely to complain about a post being "off-topic", are also the MOST LIKELY to do the very same thing whenever it suits them. For some reason it just doesn't appear to be a foul when they themselves do it. And yes, this is especially true on this message board, and especially true of some of the most popular and prolific posters.
So, what one person considers "hijacking" another poster might consider to be "constructive redirection".
So, who’s winning the Super Bowl tomorrow?
GentlemanJim 02-12-2023, 03:35 AM And are the halftime performers lipsyncing? I think yes.
And in Soccer, who gets socked?

I had Posters hijack my thread and when I complained, they claimed my thread had run its course and they had "Evolved," it for me. My thread was only like two days old.

You know? I watched the movie "War Games" for the first time in about 20 years, and it amazed me how much my own thinking had evolved to become very similar to Professor Falken. He had grown weary of enabling fools ,hoping to help them, only to see them misuse the help in such a way as to exploit and abuse others.......so he had concluded that perhaps mankind had worn out his welcome so to speak, and his inevitable extinction was NOT any great loss, that some other species would pick up the torch, etc.
And 20 years ago that seemed like such a warped perspective.
But, seeing the selfish things people do, while having the acts "fully justified" in their minds, ...there are just so many self righteous individuals....that I think Falken was speaking a lot of wisdom.
And the strange thing about that perspective is, that it scales so completely across the entire human experience. Regardless if we are talking about just some splinter group on the net repurposing someone else's thread on a message board for their own ambitions, or if you are a country supplying weapons to a perennial "victim" nation, ostensibly so that they can defend themselves, only to see the Capital city of their neighboring state in flames the following week.....you can never underestimate the propensity of others to misuse your good intentions.
GentlemanJim 02-12-2023, 10:58 AM :singer:You see? There are lunatics out there who can machinegun 70 year old men in their backs, and still manage to justify it as "self defense", that you just hate yourself for believing in them in the first place.......

I would never hijack someone’s thread and change the subject.
Pizza’s great. Who’s with me on that!
Yong Fang 02-18-2023, 11:19 AM I am a reader of www.straightdope.com and am a sometimes poster there until I am kicked off. That board hates free expression whatsoever. I do however read the board although their politics are a polar opposite of mine which gets annoying. It is a leftist "woke" board and hates anyone who goes against their line of reasoning.
Concerning "hijack", there is no "hijack", if someone goes off subject, just ignore the post and move on. So many people on that board apologize if they "hijack" a thread. "Don't mean to hijack, but..." or a post "This is a hijack". To me this is so much bull"bleep". Just say what you want to say, and if people dont like it, ignore it and go to the next damn post. On Straight Dope, posters have to apologize for it "Dont mean to hijack but...." Hijack is an annoying word on Straight Dope. It is almost the members there have to beg forgiveness to "hijack" a thread. Plus substituting "Og" for "God" for some stupid reason. That ridiculous board has its own language.
I love Message Boards. There used to be a lot of them ten years ago and was a "member" of several of them and this is the only one now. I wish there were more and periodically look on search engines for them, but they are sort of outdated which is sad. I was a member for years of iidb.org, which was a wonderful board and the only way one could get banned was to make threats. The board has been reserrected, but there are so many persinickty rules there. I was called about by the moderators for anything and everything. They were only interested in their point of view and hated humor. The old board was wonderful because one can have debate and arguments. Not here. I finally said that the moderators were like East Germany, and they told me I could not criticize them, which was enough and went full bore in the last message for which I would be banned for and I was. The only times here all of these years on this message board I have been called out by moderators here is because of "dirty" language.
I will thank Sitcoms Online message board for being very tolerant and although the content here is very tame, we can have discussion. I have been here for 13 years and thank you.
