I've noticed an increase in spam this year, and I blame Amazon. I'm going to be sure to NOT order from any of their vendors, just from Amazon itself.

Man, I must really be ahead of the curve here? That's the way I've been doing it for 20+ years.

I've got email accounts that I only use to "authenticate" forum memberships.....email accounts that I only use for buying online....email accounts that I only use for official business....etc seems like the best way.

Trouble is, the y suggest going to Gmail, and Google wrote the book on pirating personal data for profit...so its like 'out of the frying pan, into the fire" as far as their solution goes.

I NEVER check the email account that I'm registered here with, for example, the ONLY reason that account even exists is so that forum admin's verification notice wouldn't bounce when it was sent...other than that I use it to retrieve sign up codes when opening new accounts, and that's it.

I'd never use gmail for anything. All the spam comes from gmail accounts. They do absolutely nothing to make sure the applicant for an account is not a bot.

I beg to differ with you. Gmail has this"bit" where they are trying to force legacy accounts to cough up cell phone numbers for some krap they call "3 point verification" which imo is synonymous with "loss of anonymity"

And it suxx, imo.

Mind you,I'd never use it for any hi-value transactions, but it's more than adequate for "joe admin wants to send you an account verification for blah-blah onluine", etc

This is just what Paypal does. So I dropped it after 15 years.

I don't know how all these spam accounts will handle 3 factor authentication from gmail--it could weed some of it out--possibly the bot would never log out. Google needs to know there aren't people behind all that spam.

You're right about the spam though. It's gotten much much worse the past 10 years.

Periodically I'll go in to my "burner" accounts just to delete anything that doesn't look like I might want it, and 600-800 junk messages is not uncommon.

I like old maps, and there was this one I found in PDF format at a PDF archive, required me to open a free account in order to download...so I did, and that place now sends me 25-40 updates per month.

You know how on some forums you can set up your account so that you get an email notice any time some one replies to one of your posts? Well, this place has a message board, and I get notified anytime any other member makes a post that includes keywords that were derived from my download.

No way for me to turn it off,.. it's strictly done as a "courtesy," they claim

I use google chrome, and it works good for my needs, I looked into other browers but the one I use works ...but could be the fake, lies, crap spam I get daily comes due to G.C. but I just delete for a few minutes and trash them and go on with my limited comptuer stuff... I swear t he Big Companies are the WORST offenders.....and nothing can be done, just don't Open anything that is sent thru.....LOTS OF FAKE FAKE FAKE....

Some of the email addresses are spoofed. So the name displayed might be Kohl's or some other known business name, but it's really some unrelated gmail account, probably opened by a bot.

Since I know NOT to open any of these fake lies spam, I just wonder if one does open them or one, does their computer get corrupted?

I think opening the email is not a problem, but clicking on any link (particularly one from any mailer that would spoof an email address) opens you to malware, takes you to a malicious site, or both.

One common scam is an email with a spoofed name of someone you know, wanting you to click a link, allegedly to look at some pictures.

I always think they've broken into the sender's legit email account, and read their contact list.
