Many sitcom feuds are nonsensical, like Claire and Gloria's longstanding rivalry in Modern Family and Pawnee and Eagletown's conflict in Parks & Rec.

I cannot access the article for some reason....

Claire (and her brother) did not like Gloria because her father was very wealthy and he married a woman young enough to be his daughter as a second wife, and not only that, she is a divorcee with a son. Claire even said in private early in the series that she called Gloria a "gold digger", and it got back to her. I find relationships where one partner 20 plus years older than the other to be very weird also. We can also suspect that Gloria would not have married Al Bundy in Chicago with a crap house, a crap job and a mortgage either.

I am from Memphis, and Memphis doesn't like the capitol city Nashville. I think down deep there is a lot of jealousy of Memphis towards Nashville since that city has become arguably much more successful than Memphis in anything. I think there is also a bit of a cultural divide, Nashville is Country Music and Memphis is Blues Music. The cuisine is slightly different, and Nashville probably doesnt think that Memphis is truly a Tennessee city (and I know that doesnt make sense, but Memphis is more of a Mississippi city but in Tennessee due to many factors.

A good example is when the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1995 but the Nashville stadium wasnt built yet and there was no other suitable facility. Memphis had (and has) a 60,000 seat stadium. Was going to stay two years there, but very few people came to games, 15,000 to 20,000 maybe. I dont think the tickets were that expensive and were probably almost giving them away to put butts in seats. We were like "That's Nashville's team (and it still is despite the TENNESSEE Titans name). Go play in Nashville...."

Or the states of Michigan and Ohio during college football season. Might as well be North and South Korea.

It does help however that Claire and her husband are also wealthy (living in a suburb of LA in a spacious four bedrrom home).
