I think it did. Although in my opinion, "Showgirls" was a great movie, but most people thought of it as disgusting, and simply, pornographic.

Before "Showgirls," Elizabeth's career seemed to be heading up. But after that movie everything went down. She became the actress that all Hollywood looked down upon.

Instead of being her groundbreaking film... it destroyed it.

Hopefully Elizabeth continues to recover from the effect of the horrible masterpiece, "Showgirls."

What are your guys thoughts on "Showgirls"?... Do you think it ruined Elizabeth Berkley's career?

I'm not really sure. I like the movie to and thought it was a great work of art.

She was getting a reacurring role on Titus. That was until those Fox morons cancelled it.

But do you think her career could have been much more successful if she hadn't done "Showgirls"?

"Showgirls" was probably a mistake. I guess she wanted to shake her goody-good "SBTB" image.
And what better way than with full frontal nudity!
After the failure of that film, she layed low for a while, took her lumps from the critics, but she's getting back up there, IMO.

She recently had a part in a Woody Allen flick "Curse Of The Jade Scorpion." Although she was pretty much cast as the none too bright eye-candy secretary, it's a good boost to any actors rep if Woody Allen puts you in one of his films...

I don't think it ruined her career but I do think that it hurt it. It was a big mistake on her part to be in that movie but I think there have been instances where actors or actresses have made bigger mistakes than that and their career eventually made a full recovery.

I don't think her career was going anywhere. So I don't think she had anything to lose . Except I think she did shut a few doors for herself by doing Showgirls.

i thought it was a pretty good movie, of course the writing and acting werent that good but there was something about it. probably just seeing jessie from saved by the bell as a stipper, lol. in some ways it probably helped her career, it sure got everyones attention. i heard that goldie hawn gave her the part in the first wives club because she thought that every actress deserved a chance to make up for a bad movie.

Yes, Goldie Hawn should know a lot about making up for bad movies.

"Town And Country," for starters...

I don't think it destroyed her career, but it certainly didn't do what it was presumably intended to do, make her a big-name star.

I didn't like Showgirls. I thought it was a shallow story that wasn't done very well. But EB was not bad in it! All the critics who trashed it sort of lumped her in with the criticism--"Yeah, it's a terrible movie, so she must be bad too." The worst thing about her in the movie was the makeup job they did on her to give her that hard, mean look instead of showing off her considerable natural beauty.

But anyone who says she was terrible or embarrassing in that movie is prejudiced, I think. At the very least she's a competent actress, and she did fine consdiering the wretchedness of the script given her. And as far as being arousing goes, well, a couple of her scenes were out of this world, and if you've ever seen it you know what I'm talking about.

So she got tons of bad press and she was the butt of a million jokes after Showgirls and it seemed like her career might be destroyed. But even though she didn't get big starring roles, she wasn't blackballed in Hollywood and she did get work on smaller films, sometimes in supporting roles, sometimes as star, and she did a good jod on the ones I've seen. Slowly she's built her reputation back up, and even though she's not a Julia Roberts-type of star, she's an actress who works a lot and that's a lot more than most actresess can say. Showgirls turned out to be a pretty rough ride for Liz, but she showed some courage, suffered the criticism, plugged away, and I have a lot of respect for her.

http://lebeauleblog.com/2015/01/30/what-the-hell-happened-to-elizabeth-berkley/#more-21071

In the early 90’s, Elizabeth Berkley was a rising star. After several years on television, she was ready to make the leap to the big screen. Showgirls (http://lebeauleblog.com/2015/01/30/what-the-hell-happened-to-elizabeth-berkley/3/) was a huge opportunity. The script was written by one of the most successful screenwriters in Hollywood and the director was A-list. The last time Paul Verhoven and Joe Eszterhas collaborated, they made a star. But this time, things worked out differently (http://lebeauleblog.com/2015/01/30/what-the-hell-happened-to-elizabeth-berkley/4/). Instead of becoming an A-list actress, Berkley’s movie career went down in flames.

What the hell happened?

In 1989, Berkley was cast on the kids’ show, Saved By the Bell. The show was about a group of six high school students at the fictional Bayside High School in California. Mark-Paul Gosselaar played Zach, the charming schemer. Tiffani-Amber Thiessen played Kelly, the popular cheerleader. Mario Lopez played A.C. the jock. Berkley played Jessie, the brainy crusader. Dustin Diamond played Screech, the dorky kid. And Lark Voorhies played Lisa, the gossip.

Saved By the Bell was a spin-off from a Disney Channel show called Good Morning, Miss Bliss. The original version of the show focused on a high school teacher named Miss Bliss played by Disney legend, Haley Mills. Gosselaar, Voorhies and Diamond played students on the show which was set in Indianapolis.

Miss Bliss was cancelled by Disney after 13 episodes and the rights reverted back to NBC. They repackaged the show as Saved By the Bell. The three students and the principal character all relocated to California.

Berkley auditioned for the role of Kelly. She lost the part to Theissen. But the producers liked her well enough to create the role of Jessie for her. At 17, Berkley was the oldest member of the cast. Diamond was only 12 years old. The rest of the cast was 15 at the time.

Saved By the Bell became the highest-rated show on Saturday mornings. The show ran through 1993. NBC doubled the order for the final season but Theissen and Berkley did not sign on for the extra episodes. They were included in the final graduation episode which was filmed before they left. After the final season, Saved By the Bell inspired several spin-offs..

In 1990, Berkley continued making guest appearances on other TV shows while working on Saved By the Bell. She appeared in a two-parter on Valerie (aka The Hogan Family). She also appeared on the short-lived sitcom, Married People. And finally she did an episode of Life Goes On.

She also joined the rest of the Saved By the Bell cast for a TV movie, Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style. The movie was actually filmed after the season finale but aired before the final season started.

In 1994, Berkley started showing up on TV dramas. She had guest appearances on Crossroads, Diagnosis Murder and Burke’s Law. On Diagnosis Murder, she played a dancer in an episode titled Flashdance With Death which is for the record my least favorite type of flashdance.

Berkley appeared in the TV movie, Bandit: Bandit Goes Country. Yes, the movie was based on the 1977 movie Smokey and the Bandit. Brian Bloom stepped in for Burt Reynolds despite his blasphemous lack of a mustache. Christopher Akins played his buddy. Charles Nelson Reilly and country music star Mel Tillis also made appearances.

She also returned to the world of Saved by the Bell for the TV movie, Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Vegas. Berkley only made a brief cameo appearance towards the end of the movie because she was busy launching her movie career.

If she has been in other things since the release of that movie then I wouldn't say that being in the film ruined her. In my opinion, if you are still out there and able to get work no matter what kind it is, then your career is still alive and kicking. :) :) :)

God bless you and Elizabeth always!!! :) :) :)

I don't think the movie ruined Elizabeth's career. She was just taking a chance on doing something different and that's what actors do. Actors aren't supposed to always play the same characters. I didn't see Showgirls but I remember seeing the previews and I know Gina Ravera, Glenn Plummer and Gina Gershon were in it. I love Gina Gershon and I want her. Who cares that she didn't become a big star after Showgirls. She may have gotten another job if she gave up acting. Sometimes actors stop acting and they choose another job. I saw her in Any Given Sunday with Al Pacino, Jamie Foxx, Dennis Quaid, James Woods, Cameron Diaz and rapper LL Cool J. She played a escort service girl because she had sex with Al Pacino and he paid her after she told him what she does for a living LOL. They met at a club. Any Given Sunday is a good movie and it was directed by Oliver Stone. Very good cast of actors and NFL football legends Jim Brown and Lawrence Taylor were also in it. Elizabeth has aged well because I saw her on the cover of People magazine several years ago when she took a picture with the cast of Saved By The Bell for a reunion.

She's also doing better projects than that Showgirls. I agree that Showgirls did let her down, but she bounced back and overcome it.

But it looks like both Tiffani and Elizabeth are going to do the best current projects than the other SBTB castmembers, IMO.

The thing with the movie Showgirls is it has become somewhat of a cult classic type of movie. There a many people out there that actually love the movie and the work that Elizabeth put into. I for one think it is garbage, but to each there own.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. I don't wanna see it but I do love Gina Gershon who's in the movie. Gina is hot and she was in Out For Justice movie with Steven Seagal, Red Heat with Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Belushi and Larry Fishburne and Palmetto with Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Shue. Elizabeth is hot too and she's aged well. I like her movies Adventures In Babysitting and Cocktail with Tom Cruise.

I like Gina Ravera who was also in Showgirls as Elizabeth's housing roommate. Gina was in Soul Food movie with Vanessa Williams, Nia Long, Vivica Fox and Mekhi Phifer and Rhapsody movie with LisaRaye and Wood Harris. I love LisaRaye and she's hot. I love lightskin black women. Gina also played on The Closer tv show with Kyra Sedgwick. I also like Glenn Plummer who was in Showgirls. He's a good actor and he was in South Central movie, Menace II Society movie and The Substitute movie with Tom Berenger and Ernie Hudson.

The director of the movies has since accepted that he is go blame for how the movie came out.

Elizabeth did not deserve the abuse that she went through. She has since done some movies and shows so she has bounced back.

Tiffany and Elizabeth are both doing well which I am glad.

The funny this is that Showgirls didn't really destroy Elizabeth Berkley's career outright. Please here me out. Prior to that, she was best known for being a supporting actress on a kitschy, cheesy, low-budget Saturday morning kids' sitcom. But after even after Showgirls, she got to do The First Wives Club and earned roles in Woody Allen and Oliver Stone movies. Even the more successful members of the Saved by the Bell cast (namely Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tiffani Thiessen) had to settle for replacement roles on aging hits and basic cable fluff, while Elizabeth got to work for Oscar-winning auteurs.

And as I said, while Elizabeth Berkley still worked after Showgirls, it no doubt destroyed her chance at the A-list. At the time, the hype surrounding her was heavy and she was supposed to be launched into the A-list in the same way that Sharon Stone was with Basic Instinct.

It didn't ruin her real-life marriage at all, either.
