Matlock is coming back to TV… but she’ll look a little different this time. (Yes, we said “she.”)

Oscar winner Kathy Bates will play the title character in a new version of Matlock, which has earned a pilot order at CBS, TVLine has learned. Bates takes over the lead role from Andy Griffith, who played the folksy lawyer on the original Matlock, which ran for six seasons on NBC and then another three seasons on ABC.

“After achieving success in her younger years, the brilliant septuagenarian Madeline Matlock (Kathy Bates) rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within,” according to the official description. The new Matlock is “inspired by the classic television series of the same name,” per CBS.

Bates is also an executive producer on the new Matlock, along with Jennie Snyder Urman (Jane the Virgin), Joanna Klein (Good Sam), NCIS: Los Angeles star Eric Christian Olsen and John Will. Bates is known for her film work in Misery, Fried Green Tomatoes and Titanic, but she’s done plenty of TV work in recent years on shows like American Horror Story and Disjointed. She even played a lawyer on the NBC drama Harry’s Law, a role that earned her a pair of Emmy nominations.

Along with Matlock, CBS also handed a pilot order to Elsbeth, a spinoff of The Good Wife starring Carrie Preston, and opened writers’ rooms for dramas Watson (about Sherlock Holmes’ famed companion) and The Pact. The network already ordered to series the Justin Hartley drama The Never Game last month.

Ugh no. May this pilot get passed on, there should be no other title Matlocks besides Andy Griffith.

This is absolutely ridiculous! Why bother calling it Matlock in the first place. It's about a female attorney returning to the workforce as an associate of a prestigious law firm being supervised by a female African American attorney, who is the firm's key rainmaker. Outside of the lead character's name, what does any of that have to do with Matlock? Ponderous, what's next Denise the Menace!

David Del Rio & Leah Lewis Join CBS' "Matlock" Pilot

David Del Rio (The Baker and the Beauty) and Leah Lewis (Nancy Drew) have been cast as series regulars opposite Kathy Bates and Skye P. Marshall in CBS’ drama pilot "Matlock".

Del Rio plays Billy, a charismatic young associate a few years out of law school and assigned to work on one of the firm’s biggest cases. He helps Matty navigate her new work environment as he seemingly knows more than he should.

Lewis plays Sarah, a junior associate eager to get ahead and not worried about being liked. Sarah is all ambition, determined to be seen for her smarts and willing to do anything to move up a peg at the firm. She is not pleased when she’s forced to work alongside Matty, lowering her position at the company even further.

Jason Ritter Joins CBS' "Matlock" Pilot

He will play Julian, the son of the head of the firm. Julian was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but he’s not to be underestimated. Diligent and persistent with a lot to prove, he’s at odds with prioritizing his family and balancing his career.

"Matlock" Ordered to Series at CBS

CBS has handed a series order to "Matlock", starring Kathy Bates. It will air during the 2023-24 season and will be joined by "Tracker", starring Justin Hartley, which formerly was known as "The Never Game" and was ordered to series in December.

CBS isn’t specifying episode orders, particularly given the current writers strike.
