Honeymousers Shorts Reviews: "The Honey-Mousers" & "Cheese It, the Cat":
I remember watching these shorts for the first time when I was a kid. I watched them on Looney Tunes on Nickelodeon. This was before I became a fan of the Honeymooners so all the Honeymooners references went over my head. Only three were made. However, I do remember thinking that I saw a clip of one short where Ralph interacted with Speedy Gonzalez. I was mistaken.
The characters are portrayed as mice and perhaps due to copyright reasons, the Kramdens are called the Crumdens and the Nortons are called the Mortons with Ed called Ned.
Short #1
Air Date: Sat. 12/8/56
"The Honey-Mousers":
Ralph comes home and finds out that there is no food in the house since the people moved out. So Ralph tries to get some stale cheese from mousetraps to survive. Care to guess what happens? He gets trapped in the mosuetrap. Ned Morton comes by and they are ahppy to learn that a new family has arrived. They try to get food from the kitchen only to be stopped dead in their tracks by a huge cat called Sam Cat. (Ironically, Nickelodeon would have a teen sitcom in the early 2010s called Sam & Cat starring Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande. Yes, THAT Ariana Grande.)
After they built a "Trojan dog" from a barrel and operate it from inside, they arrive at the fridge and load it up with food. They are litterally holding the big pieces of food in their hands and dropping it in the Trojan dog. My are those mice strong. Sam attacks and the dog is destroyed.
When they arrive back at the Kramden house, Alice asks why they don't just get rid of Sam. Ralph says it she thinks it is so simple, she should do it. She confronts Sam and slaps him causing the cat to flee. That is some powerful slap coming from a mouse and what a wimp Sam is. Ralph thanks his wife and they kiss.
Short #2:
Air Date: Sat. 5/4/57
"Cheese It, the Cat":
Ralph Crumden drives home in a bus but sicne he's a mouse it's a wind-up toy bus. He carries a present inside for Alice. He goes into the adult kitchen to get some cake for her surprise birthday party. Only to be surprised by a cat's paw. After he strikes the cat's paw with a mallet, he remarks that there has NEVER been a cat in the kitchen before (despite the existance of the cat in the previous short.)
Ralph goes to the sink drain to get help from Ned Morton who works in the sewers. He explains to Ned the situation. Ned shows Ralph his toy armored car with live ammo. Ralph: "Mmmmm boy. What a dan-dan-dandy." Gee, I wonder where he got that line from? Ralph drives it to Sam Cat. Sam merely holds its thumb over the cannon barrel, blowing up Ralph when he fires it. When Ralph comes back to Ned, he says: "Got anymore bright ideas, Mr. Morton?"
Apparantly to get back at him for his dumb idea, Ralph paints Ned with invisable ink and says to Ned that he is now invisable. Ned confronts the Cat and plucks one of his whiskers. Sam shakes his head in disbelief. Morton gets the cake but as he returns into the Kramden house, he absent-mindedly eats it. Ralph is upset and decides to try the ink himself. He makes Morton paint him with the ink. Despite Ned saying that he can still see him, Ralph charges boldly into the kitchen. Care to guess what happens? If you guessed, running back and screaming and disheveled, come up and take your prize.
Ralph then clings onto a champagne cork as Ned pops it. He goes through Sam's mouth through his tail. Yeah, you really got to suspend disbelief when you watch Looney Tunes shorts. Ned distracts the cat and runs back into the hole. That plan also did not work.
The mice then run through the walls to the kitchen counter. When Sam hops up to look for them, Ned pulls his tail down into the garbage disposal and Ralph turns it on. Sam is sucked in and shaved nearly bald. As this is happening, the mice steal the cupcake from the fridge. My are those mice strong.
When Alice returns home, Ralph has Ned put the candles on the cake while he gives her her present. Alice is surprised, but so is Ralph because Ned, being dumb, puts firecrackers on the cake instead of candles. After they play catch with the cupcake, they shove it out the door and into Sam's face. An explosion is heard. Ned opens the door. Ned: "No casualties Ralph." The camera cuts to Sam who apparantly got blown up to a light hanging on the ceiling. Sam: "'No casualties' he says."
