She woke me at 2AM this morning with a bolt and roll, 4.2 EQ off Malibu -- it felt like at least a 5 and kept me getting back to sleep for a couple hrs.

The last EQ that did damage here was in 1994, 29 yrs ago and it's been quiet for a long spell.


And then the Tornado in Pasadena TX near Houston. Said to have been catastrophic.

Didn't wake me up , I was STILL up at 2AM , reading when it hit ! Scary !!! :eek:

And there was another on this past Saturday only a 2.4 centered in Sherman Oaks , but I felt it !! :eek:

I was living in Hayward California at the time of the Loma Prieta quake. Just as a fluke I had flown back to Atlanta a few days earlier, and was on the return trip, my plane was actually descending to make it's landing in Oakland, when the engines abruptly wound back up, and the plane started regaining altitude. Went into a huge circling pattern taking us back east of Lake Tahoe 3 times, before finally landing in Sacramento. A 747 from Malaysia landed at the airport ahead of us, and his landing gear was too far apart for the runway, raised all kinds of dust.

Got another flight the following morning to get back to Oakland. And it was surreal seeing all the damage. And losing my "cherry" to the hundreds of aftershocks that came after. Thinking with every aftershock "here we go again"

And, I was living in Torrance in '94, remember waking up and immediately thinking "oh, one of those" and just rolled up in the thick comforter I had, and onto the floor hoping my bed and dresser would support the ceiling if it caved in.

SO,I had two biggies within my first 5 years living in California, making me second guess my sanity for even living there.

Also, living in Hayward during the 1991 Oakland area wildfires, And in Indiana during the Derechos of 2012 and 2022

As a youngster, I was in Indiana for the famed 1965 Palm Sunday Tornado as well as the 1974 "Super Outbreak" tornado event And while I was fortunate that there was no destruction in my immediate vicinity from either one, we had disaster areas all around us with people making it sound like the end of the world, on our doorstep.

Caroline, yeah you must have really felt it, you are closer to Malibu than I am !

Yeah that Northridge Earthquake in 94, that was in January too ! I was through that one ! :eek:

I went thru the EQ in No Cal in 1989 as I was living up there...and when I moved back to So Cal in 1991, went thru the 1994 Shaker. Lots of damage done.


All in all, for all the comforts of So Cal living, I have weathered the 2 quakes I lived thru.

The first one I was ever through was 1987, I was fairly new to California . That one was in the morning, 7:30 or so? But I was 7 months pregnant with my first child and already kind of nervous anyway ! :eek:

When I first moved to CA in the 60's, I felt some light shakers but didn't do any panicking, so all in all for 57 yrs here, things have been pretty steady ...'94 was the worst, they say it landed on a fault in Santa Monica and some apt bldgs collapsed on my street. They were brick and since then a lot of retrofitting of some of the apts is going on;

I first set foot in California in August 1989. And remember thinking while driving on the lower level f the MacArthur freeway "wow, this spindly birdcage construction in earthquake country?" Seemed like a colossal bad idea at the time.

But ' logic dictated that since it had been built in the 1950s, it had stood the test of time, and whoever built it, MUST have been aware,...etc.

and, less than 3 months later, all came tumbling down. I felt prescient...even "gifted" perhaps.

I remember being in Burbank after the Northridge earthquake; never seen so much destruction. Sidewalks bolted up, etc. It was surreal.

I have only been in one tornado, and that is when I was visiting Oklahoma City, not a lot of damage, just torrential rain.


The worst natural disaster I encountered was the Witch Fire of 2007. I had to live in a motel for nearly a week because my area was evacuated.


San Diego doesn't get a lot of moderate earthquakes. We get the occasional small jolt when an earthquake occurs in the deserts or Baja (Mexico).
