Which NFL broadcast team is the best?

By Joe Lucia on 01/23/2023

Well, well, well. It’s been awhile. Welcome to Awful Announcing’s NFL announcer rankings for the 2022 season.

This we, we asked you, the loyal readers of AA to grade 17 (our most ever!) NFL broadcast teams that called games during the 2022 season. We then tabulated and weighed all of your grades on the four point scale (a 4.0 was the highest possible score. A 0.0 was the lowest). No voter’s opinion was given more or less significance than any other (you, the reader, had as much of a voice as me, the writer).

Before we start, some factoids about the voting.

We had 34,470 votes in total for the 17 teams.
The average score was 2.64.
CBS was the best scoring network, with their announcers receiving an average grade of 2.73.
ESPN was right behind CBS, though the network had just two teams (compared to six for CBS), with an average grade of 2.71.
Fox brought up the rear with a 2.53 average.
The most common grade was a B (34.38% of votes). The least common grade was an F (4.12%, you guys have gotten nice).

I mainly watch college football, while NFL is a superior product, I really do not pay that much attention to it until the playoffs.

I have mentioned this before I believe but I wish there were no announcers. Just show the game without them. I find them most of the time annoying. First, they tell me things I already know. "Mahomes passes to Jackson for a 34 yard gain!" I know, I am watching the game. "Fumble! Who comes up with it at the bottom of the pile?" I dont know, like you I am wondering the same thing. I wonder if the announcers are there for the benefit of the blind or what.

Football is a game with a lot of lulls in it, setting up between downs, time outs, injuries, what have you. So the annoncers have to keep yapping about something to pass the time. I wonder sometimes if some of them are snorting lines of blow in the booth.

With college football, I usually watch the synopsis of the game the next morning on Youtube since I am on the other side of the World and usually asleep when the games are on in America. I usually get so annoyed at the announcers, I turn off the sound. To me it's like going to a movie you want to see and the bozo next to you is on the phone the whole time explaining the movie to someone else.

I wish there was a feature to silence them. Have a seperate sub-channel with the announcers which can be muted.
