It seemed like martin was softer and less ignorant in the first season, but after the 1st season the martin character was more manly and hip-and less soft-i take it he had a conversation with the producers about changing the way he acts on the show

They do this to TV characters all the time. Tommy was also different through the course of the series. He seemed to have the same personality as Martin in the first season, but he was made to be more cultured, sensitive, and intelligent as a contrast to Martin's abrasive ways. Even Cole wasn't so dumb in the first season. I guess TV characters change depending on the ratings.

Martin was a little passive in season one. It faded away as the seasons went on
