Jan 12 (Reuters) - Warner Bros Discovery Inc (WBD.O) is exploring a sale of its music library that could be valued at more than $1 billion, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The company is looking for buyers for the music copyrights that it owns, according to the report, which added that the process was in its early stages.

Warner Bros Discovery, which was formed last year by the merger of AT&T Inc's (T.N) WarnerMedia unit and Discovery Inc, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

In the early 2000s, WarnerMedia sold its music division to a group of investors but retained copyrights to some soundtracks for movies such as Judy Garland-starrer "The Wizard of Oz" and 1973's "Westworld".

Warner Bros Discovery's reported plan would be the latest under top boss David Zaslav, who recently shut down the CNN+ streaming service and canceled the movie "Batgirl".

When you get the general picture in record labels Warner Bros Records is the second most popular record label in the world next to Columbia Records and Warner Bros Records has owned several record labels from Sire Records to Warner Nashville and Reprise Records and when you look at the general picture from a different vision they had the biggest names in music such as Madonna Chaka Khan Prince The B-52's and others and when you were an upcoming artist Warner Bros Records was your label because they knew how to promote artists well unlike what Arista Records is currently doing now. Why Warner Bros Discovery is planning to sell the music catalogues of artists is because I think Warner Bros Records is going belly up and they are doing whatever they can to keep it alive. Because Warner Bros had other labels too that went broke such as Giant Records and they also own Elektra Records Asylum Records and Decca Records too and Madonna owned Maverick Records too under Warner Bros Records too and what will happen now if this sale happens is that Warner Bros will form another label and move all it's artists to it
