View Full Version : Silly things people do on TV shows that people don't do in real life
TheLittleFaerie 01-12-2023, 05:14 AM 1. When 2 ppl are in bed and they need to talk to each other, they always gotta turn the light on
2. If 3 people are together and 2 of them wanna talk about the other one in private, they get close together and move about 4 or 5 feet from the 3rd person and continue to talk in a normal voice, as if the 3rd person wouldn't be able to hear them.....
3. When people get through talking on the telephone, they never say "bye", they just hang up
4.No one can sneeze or cough without it meaning they MUST be coming down with something....
5. When people sit down to eat, they never finish a meal, they sit down for like 2 minutes and then up again, and rarely ever have a beverage with their food
6.If a man needs to disguise himself as a woman, all he has to do is throw on a cheap wig and bo-peep type dress and BOOM! Everyone buys him as a woman... I'm transgender, and have naturally soft features and a round face and am only 5'4.... and even when I try as hard as I can to present as female, I still get clocked and "SIRed" half the time... it's annoying to see a 6'2 totally male looking guy like John Ritter on 3's Company throw on a wig and dress and no one even give him a double take and instantly believes he's a woman lol
7.When people talk to each other or argue with each other, they have to be looking right at each other about 6 inches from each other's face and rarely ever sit down
keep it going
GentlemanJim 01-12-2023, 11:12 AM Sometimes I think they get a little carried away trying to "plant" emotion onto the audience. Just as an easy example... the Rocky movies where Rocky is getting his head beat in, and between punches they do a quick cut to Talia Shire looking like she just saw the Alien monster. I realize there are probably entire chapters in the "How Drama is Done" textbooks, written by highly acclaimed "experts" saying this MUST be a part of the show.... But when the concept is overdone it makes you feel like you are being patronized
And, I've often wondered how someone can be tied to a tree, handcuffed to a bed, locked in a closet....for DAYS on end....and not soiled themselves. Same with comas. The star is unconscious in bed for a week, suddenly regains consciousness, and is ready to seek revenge, fresh as a daisy. Wearing the same clothes they were wearing the day they were struck down.
And, how about gratuitous smiling? I mean unless you are the Osmond family nobody goes around all day with a preemptive smile on their face.
Edit/add: Regarding the Talia Shire bit, I often wonder if they just shot an entire set of her groaning and wretching in front of the camera, and then picked the few out of the many that they wanted to use? If so it would be interesting to see the entire uncut reel in an "unpublished out takes" sort of feature
How often in tv and movies when someone is carrying a bag of groceries the bag must have an unwrapped baguette poking out the top of the bag. I work in a grocery store and that seems so unsanitary.
80sTrivia 01-12-2023, 09:33 PM People meeting their doppelgangers and/or switching identities because that's so easy and no one notices they are acting completely different.
Families/characters having food fights and making a massive mess. Never known anyone to do that in real life.
Having characters that you only hear their voice, never see their faces, because don't we all listen to disembodied voices in our day-to-day lives? (Well, on the radio, of course...)
JamesG 01-12-2023, 09:56 PM People are always seen using chopsticks whenever eating out of Asian (mainly Chinese) food containers.
I’m not saying people don’t, but most of the Chinese take-out places here in NYC don’t provide chopsticks and you have to specifically request them if they do. The take-out places cater towards Westerners and it is assumed they (we) either don’t know how to use them or prefer to use a fork.
River Jordan 01-13-2023, 12:07 AM I have NEVER seen the "Novice Pool player wins a couple of dollars in easy game against accomplished Pool Hustler, Pool Hustler upps the ante, plays REALLY good and now Novice Pool player owes big money and has to be rescued by Friends/Family," in real life.

Chris Hansen had a sting operation where the Pedophile entered the Bait House, and only heard the Decoy say something like,"Here, have some cookies I made you, they're so good," and he never even saw her. She said her line without ever meeting him and then left. That Pedophile was one of the scariest Pedophiles the show ever had. He walked into the house naked, looking for an underaged girl to have sex with and wanted to have sex with her in every room so that wherever she went in the house, she'd think of him.
He also asked her to do sexual things to a cat before they had sex! Only a handful of People were scarier than this guy. One guy in particular basically tried to kidnap the decoy and Chris Hansen said something like,"This guy was one of the few Pedophiles that actually scared me and I was worried about how aggressive he was to the Decoy. He aggressively kept telling her to get in the car with him even though she was showing signs of not wanting to go anywhere with him. I came out early to prevent him from doing anything harmful to the Decoy."
TheLittleFaerie 01-13-2023, 04:56 AM I forgot this one.... someone's in a restaurant and says, "Gimme a beer!" or in a store, "Lemme have a pack of cigarettes!" No need to mention a brand lol
I remember I tried that once in a restaurant just to see what would happen, I said, "Could I get a glass of wine!" And the server was like, "Uh...what type?" lol
Or call the operator and say "Operator....." Even back when I called the operator I never addressed them as, "Operator", I would just start talking lol

I was getting into it until #6. I wasn't expecting that. No offense.
It reminded me of that beer commercial where football player looking guys put on dresses and wigs to take advantage of ladies night prices art a bar.
JamesG 01-14-2023, 02:35 AM On medical dramas they always show the doctors and patients having these long philosophical discussions and other conversations about past regrets and their romantic lives.
I was lucky when I got to speak to my doctor for 2 minutes at the hospital.

I'm lucky enough to have a good family doctor who takes time to talk to me as long as I need to
biffbronson 01-15-2023, 10:41 AM Going to bed wearing full makeup on one's face. This was a more prevalent TV thing some decades ago I think. There used to be more obvious examples of TV actors always insisting or wanting to look their best, like Barbara Billingsley doing housework wearing a pearl necklace.
GentlemanJim 01-15-2023, 11:37 AM It often amazes me the unsanitary sources you see characters use to obtain drinking water. I realize there is a definite aspect of "any water is better than no water" if you are dying of thirst, but seeing some episodes of old westerns where they refill their canteens from the muddy wheel ruts in a road that sees horse traffic day in and day out....makes me go "blech"...
stevea 01-15-2023, 07:22 PM Disguises. We always recognize the person immediately, but no one on the show does, even people who know the person well.
Leaving the room to get something that would take a few seconds. It always takes however long the scene needs it to take, but never a few seconds.
In the scene the cast is watching a TV show. The TV show seems to "pause" while the viewers are commenting.
stevea 01-15-2023, 07:34 PM Saying "freshen up" after your trip. Real world, "The bathroom is at the end of the hall."

Those are GREAT ones!!! I was just going to mention tonight about the disguise thingy, about how someone can just put on a hat, glasses and facial hair and their own family doesn't even recognize them lmao Like in the movie Annie when Rooster fooled his own sister by wearing a hat, pair of glasses and fake mustache lol
And lol I've always used the term "freshen up" after an activity, like when I used work matinee at the theater or anything and ppl would laugh at me

I just remember seeing ppl drink straight from rivers and lakes on old shows like that, I just assumed water wasn't as polluted in those days

There used to be more obvious examples of TV actors always insisting or wanting to look their best, like Barbara Billingsley doing housework wearing a pearl necklace.
I always wondered if housewives REALLY dressed like that around the house in those days lol
But I've also noticed on shows like Sanford and Son, and Family Sketch from Carol Burnett Show, many of the men would dress somewhat slobby around the house, BUT would wear a necktie! I wonder how common that was... Ed Higgins often wore a Tie around the house as did Grady from Sanford and Son
GentlemanJim 01-16-2023, 11:49 AM I just remember seeing ppl drink straight from rivers and lakes on old shows like that, I just assumed water wasn't as polluted in those days
There is that side of it too, but I've seen them drink from muddy wagonwheel ruts too.
Another favorite, but small pond, maybe the size of a living room, and some bearded, decrepit old geezer plops down on his belly and starts washing his face, before everyone else has their chance to fill their canteens.
Or, same scenario, two hotheads start a fight, wrestling each other in the same small pond that others will have to drink from
biffbronson 01-16-2023, 12:00 PM How about having a total stranger arrive at your front door unexpected/uninvited, and you immediately swing the door wide-open & let him/her step into your living quarters. With many older shows, the stranger is in the room right off and explaining who they are and the purpose of the visit, as a convenient way of filming the 2 actors interacting for the scene.
80sTrivia 01-16-2023, 12:45 PM I also found it interesting about how there's never a television set shown on most sitcoms until there's some need for the characters to be watching television for some reason or another. Also, they normally don't actually show the TV, you just hear a narrator talking about what is going on! As if most people keep their television hidden in a closet and bring it out for special occasions!
GentlemanJim 01-16-2023, 12:47 PM One that I find particularly offensive is the popular portrayal of animal rights sympathizers as having "born that way" organic mental deficiencies.
rusty spike 01-16-2023, 05:54 PM How about people leaving their front doors unlocked so any neighbor or visitor can drop in?
Also, people visiting without knocking as well. And there are scenes where people leave their front door open when exiting. Guess burglars and robbers aren't smart enough to find their way in.

Yes I was just gonna mention doors always unlocked lol although I think in the 50s ppl prolly left them unlocked more often

Usually the TV sits against the 4th wall... and exception would be Bewitched, their TV was actually facing the camera so the audience could see whats on it.... though I don't recall seeing in on very often
TheLittleFaerie 01-17-2023, 06:49 AM Another one: When guests drop in, they always enter the house in which ever room the action is occurring, like how would they know? lol:lol:
This was especially true in Everybody Loves Raymond.... If Ray and Deb were in the kitchen they Barrones would always enter through the back door, if they were in the living room, they would enter through the front

Penny Lane 01-17-2023, 08:25 PM Write your own wedding vows.
,
I agree! Most of them are so soppy! But on the other hand my favorite wedding vow was given to Naomi by Vinton,
(I am paraphrasing)"I promise to love , honor and cherish you as long as we both think it's a good idea! "
TheLittleFaerie 01-18-2023, 06:21 AM Everyone gets "their moment" to say whatever they want and to always finish their sentence or thought. Everyone always gets to land that hilarious comeback, one-liner, etc... without being interrupted or talked over.
In real life people interrupt each other all the time, and many times you don't get to finish a thought before someone else cuts in. Especially when people are ARGUING, when people fight, they interrupt, cut in, cut each other off, shut the other one up with "DON'T CARE!! DON'T CARE!!!! "NOT LISTENING!!" "STFU!" and hardly ANYONE gets to finish a thought in a real life argument, but on TV people argue so civil lol Even when Eunice and Mama or Archie and Mike fight, they let each other finish EVERYTHING the other one wants to say, never any of this, "DON'T CARE, DON'T CARE, JUST SHUT UP!"
It used to get on my nerves, in school when I was younger I'd have a snappy one-liner I'd wanna say, find the perfect opportunity to drop it, then I get talked over before I can say it :mad:
I remember Robert Englund aka Freddy Krueger, talked about this very thing, the way people talk on TV vs how they talk in real life
JamesG 01-18-2023, 06:55 AM This is mostly done on daytime TV, during a dramatic scene one of the actors would turn to face the camera while the other one continues talking to the back of their head.

I do remember an episode of Bewitched where Tabitha was on a live kid's show with Samantha watching on television and the screen being shown. Also, on The Golden Girls, the tv was shown in the episode where Rose covers the local dog show when the armed robber showed up and also in the episode featuring "Mr. Terrific", the kiddie show host that Rose was dating...

cleverfun3000 01-24-2023, 04:00 PM They always seat everyone on one side of the dining table so the camera can see everyone without anyone obstructing the camera shot.
stevea 01-24-2023, 09:06 PM In scenes where a telephone conversation has only one participant shown, many times the actor will run thru it, with no possibility a person on the other end would have time to say anything, or would have very little time.

Yes! And like when someone is talking on the phone with someone and we only see one person and the other person on the other end says something outrageous, the person we see always has to repeat it....obviously so we the audience will know what was said, i.e. "No I will NOT kiss you there!"
TheLittleFaerie 01-25-2023, 05:45 AM When someone walks into a dark room, lights one candle, and suddenly the entire room is well lit.
If I'm not mistaken, that was spoofed in a Naked Gun or Airplane type movie... I forget the movie, but I seem to remember a man walking into a large dark room, lights one small candle and the whole room is bright as if it has 4 or 5 big lights on lol
80sTrivia 01-27-2023, 02:07 PM When one character walks off set and another character walks on from the same direction without seeing each other. There's no way they didn't run into each other in the ten second span of time.

Check out Gunsmoke season 15 episode 1 for a glaring example of what I speak.
Early in the episode, a waterstop alongside a stage coach trail called "Sweetwater". A pond not more than 300 sq ft, as brown as the muddy Mississippi, and the stage coach trail not 10' from the water's edge. People dipping their cups in the pond and drinking as if it was apunch bowl.
Stagecoaches are pulled by horses, and you know what you find on roads frequented by horses?
Yum Yum.
Penny Lane 01-27-2023, 03:33 PM This is a bit different than the original topic, but when the Happy Days set was changed in season 3 the front and back doors were on the same side of the house. That always irritated me.

I remember on Sanford and Son when they were having the party, both Fred and Lamont come down from upstairs, then about 10 seconds later a drunk/hungover Bubba comes crashing down the staircase and Fred and Lamont acted surprised to see him.... Bubba was staggering around drunk upstairs, I don't see any way they Fred and Lamont would have missed him up there  I mean all that was upstairs was a small hallway, a bathroom and 2 ~maybe 3~ bedrooms?, right? lol
ALso I remember an episode of Happy Days where Fonzie's bike was wrecked on the front lawn and they brought Fonz in the back door so he wouldn't see the wrecked bike, BUT their back door would lead out to almost EXACLTY the same place the front door does, So I don't see how Fonz wouldn't have seen it

I have a theory that the falling down the stairs was an accident but the director kept it in since Bubba just got up and did his lines like nothing happened. Maybe not, but I think its asking a lot of a sixty year old overweight man to take a pratfall without possible injuries (which would have messed up the production of the show)
I would love to ask Demond Wilson this question.
River Jordan 01-28-2023, 11:20 PM The Character putting up their hand close to their face and talking to the Audience when they don't want the other character to hear what they are saying, but want to say it directly to the audience. Ant Farm actually made fun of this by having China do this to the camera and having her Friend say something like,"I heard everything you just said to the Audience!" :lol:Or maybe it was vice versa. Now that I really think about it, I think the line was something like,"She thinks merely putting her hand close to her face and speaking to the Audience means I can't hear her, but I can! "
River Jordan 01-29-2023, 04:53 AM Not so much TV Characters, but more so Romantic Movies. Female Protagonist is carrying like three coffee cups. That reminds me when my aunt was working at a craft fair, and was on the top level of a gymnasium and accidently dropped a box on a man's head below, and he got furious and started up the stairs after her lol, she got out fast, who knows what he would have done
TheLittleFaerie 01-31-2023, 10:53 AM How about how wasteful people are on tv? lol Take a sip out of a drink then toss the rest away, etc... I often take a couple of gulps of water from a 16 ounce water bottle and thrown the rest away. The water my Family usually drinks is the purified water, which I find kind of nasty tasting, and my Family usually doesn't drink the spring water, which I find tastes good.
TheLittleFaerie 02-03-2023, 05:23 AM When someone makes a phone call, the person being called always answers on the first ring..... very rare in real life, I've found.... And if the phone does ring more than once the caller is like "Huh, they must not be home!"
