Musician Jeff Beck has died after contracting bacterial meningitis, according to his family.

He was 78 years old.

"On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck's passing," his representatives said in a statement. "After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss."

Beck, one of rock's legendary guitarists, first burst onto the scene as a member of the British band the Yardbirds. He joined the band as a replacement for fellow guitar legend Eric Clapton in 1965.

In 1966, he left Yardbirds to start his own band, the Jeff Beck Group, which featured vocalist Rod Stewart and bassist Ron Wood. Their style consisted of a unique approach to the blues and laid the groundwork for heavy metal. Stewart and Wood left the group in 1970 for Small Faces and the band disbanded on the eve of the Woodstock festival.

Later in 1970, Beck started his band up again with vocalist Alex Ligertwood, keyboardist Max Middleton, drummer Cozy Powell and bassist Clive Chapman. Beck hired Bobby Tench as the vocalist and second guitarist. The new group came out with the album "Rough and Ready" in 1971, which reached no. 46 on the album charts.

After producing the album, "Jeff Beck Group," in January 1972, the group officially disbanded in July of that same year.

While the "Jeff Beck Group" broke up, Beck continued to make music. He collaborated with bassist Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice and the trio produced and released the album "Beck, Bogert & Appice" in 1973.

That same year, Beck performed "The Jean Genie"/"Love Me Do" and "Around and Around" with David Bowie.

Following the negative reception "Beck, Bogert & Appice" received, Beck embarrassed on a solo career and released the album "Blow by Blow" in 1975. It was produced by Beatles collaborator George Martin and featured instrumental and jazz fusion elements. Although there were no lead vocalists on this album, it paved his path to recording largely without lead vocalists for the rest of his career.

Beck went on to release 10 more solo studio albums throughout his career with music incorporating electronic textures, hip-hop rhythms and more.

In his career, he earned six Grammys for best rock instrumental performance, plus additional wins for best pop instrumental performance and best pop collaboration with vocals.

He was honored with the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 2014. Rolling Stone ranked him in its top five of the 100 Greatest Guitarists.

Beck was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992 and as a solo artist in 2009.

Just last year Beck recorded new music with Johnny Depp, releasing a collaborative album in July. He also appeared on two tracks of Ozzy Osbourne's Grammy-nominated record "Patient Number 9," including the title track, which has earned him another Grammy nod.

The death of Jeff Beck has sent shockwaves through the rock world. The 78-year-old guitarist’s death was confirmed by a statement shared by his publicist and on his official social media accounts.

“On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing,” the message read. “After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”

As word of Beck’s death became public, many fellow artists took to social media to pay their respects.

Rod Stewart, whose friendship with Beck stretches back to the '60s when the two were bandmates in the Jeff Beck Group, remembered the guitarist as "the greatest." "Jeff Beck was on another planet," the singer declared. "He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group and we haven’t looked back since."

Likewise, Wood referred to Beck as "one of my band of brothers," while his Rolling Stones bandmate, Mick Jagger, described Beck as a "wonderful man and one of the greatest guitar players in the world."

“I was totally shocked to hear the very sad news of Jeff Beck’s passing,” tweeted Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi. “Jeff was such a nice person and an outstanding iconic, genius guitar player - there will never be another Jeff Beck. His playing was very special and distinctively brilliant! He will be missed.”

“Wow. What awful news,” declared Kiss frontman Paul Stanley, who honored Beck as “one of the all-time guitar masters.” “From the Yardbirds and the Jeff Beck Group on, he blazed a trail impossible to follow. Play on now and forever.”

In a series of tweets, the Kinks' Dave Davies admitted he was "shocked and bewildered" by Beck's death. "I’m heartbroken he looked in fine shape to me," Davies insisted. "Jeff Beck, it don’t make sense I don’t get it. He was a good friend and a great guitar player."

Meanwhile, fellow guitar god Jimmy Page paid tribute to Beck in a post on Instagram. “The six-stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions,” Page wrote. “Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff, I will miss you along with your millions of fans.”

Jeff Beck for me was one of the most influential guitarists on me as I grew up. In the late 70's when I was discovering guitar, he introduced me to jazz and fusion styles other than simply rock or metal. I was amazed by such songs as "Blue Wind", which I learned to play, as well as his "Blow By Blow" album which featured such songs as "Freeway Jam" and "Scatterbrain". I even saw him on Labor Day weekend at the Seattle Center Arena in 1980 for the 'There And Back' tour, which was an awesome show. I was unaware at the time of his 60's output with the Yardbirds and the Jeff Beck Group, which was also impressive.

It's when you think a guitarist of his longevity would be a around for a while and then come to find he's gone.

Embarrassed?

Beck, IMO, was one of the truly greats, who despite being consistently recognized as being at the top of his genre, still managed to be under rated.

When he was "on", there was no one better.
