We all remember BET (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrB8VNI4btM) right? Black entertainment television, home of classic shows (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/who-else-miss-the-era-of-bets-midnight-love-bets-106-park-bets-rap-city-mtvs-trl-etc.4957897/) like Rap City and 106 and park? In the late 90s and early 2000s BET was a huge part (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwEMZ_cexEQ) of the culture serving as like the black MTV.

But over the years, it has almost become a meme of how much BET sucks these days (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeKqDLu-rO0). It's crazy but it's almost consensus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBLE5cuZGn0) that BET (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/bet-is-struggling.4348531/) is no where near (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/why-is-everything-on-bet-so-trash-now.4612791/) what it used to be (https://www.reddit.com/r/BlackPeopleTwitter/comments/9wefvv/bet_was_honestly_never_the_same_after_the_viacom/). And why is that? Let's find out.

I'm Nate the great from takeflight214.com and this is the rise and fall of BET.

looking at schedule: currently BET airs Black-ish, Living Single, Martin, Tyler Perry's House of Payne, The Neighborhood, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, Tyler Perry's Sistas, Tyler Perry's the Oval, Kingdom Business, and some movies...

When BET was launched in the 80's it was a channel that had something unique and different than any other cable channel and with a variety format with comedy concerts sitcoms cooking shows talk shows game shows and music shows and movies BET would be hit with competition in the long run. But as the 90's began BET started focusing on the young hip crowd by having music shows and shows aimed at teens and the college crowd such as Teen Summit and Video Soul and more but while still keeping it's old audience BET started expanding their channel to become an empire by having spin-off channels such as BET Jazz Centric "now BET Her" and by having an empire has made BET one of the top channels in cable. But even with the earlier competitors TV One and Bounce BET is still surviving all this time. But why I think BET went downhill was when they turned themselves into what Reelz TV has done by having shows about celebrities that are dead and living with titles such as The Real Whitney Houston The Will Smith History and Chadwick Boseman The Real Truth Behind Black Panther and they should limit these shows to a maximum and focus more on sitcoms and add original movies. Another thing about BET is that they have no game shows and if they had new original game shows it would get BET ratings because it seemed that they got the rights to Steve Harvey's Family Feud and they should've aired the reruns of Cedric The Entertainer's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire instead. But BET still will be huge as the future goes on

"Why Nobody Watches The Channel Anymore"

Well about that, each year Variety provides a listing of the top rated networks, this year out of 159 networks listed BET was tied for 37, and was number 35 in the coveted 25-49 age group!

When I was back home at my parents house there was a station that mostly had "Black Entertainment" that showed a block of Sanford and Son and Good Times. I dont know the name of it but it seems fairly popular.

Maybe we have gone past as a culture of distinguishing race in entertainment anymore. Oddly BET of course lacks diversity, because of its name.

I receive TheGrio in my area, but I don't know of any sitcoms currently airing on it -- mostly dramas, reality, and HBCU sports. They do have Comics Unleashed though.

I receive TheGrio in my area, but I don't know of any sitcoms currently airing on it -- mostly dramas, reality, and HBCU sports. They do have Comics Unleashed though.

TheGrio also air movies. Like Bounce, they are both over the air digitnets.

On the cable side, there is also TV One and Cleo TV, its sister channel.

So BET is hardly unique anymore.

On the premium side, Starz and Showtime have black content along with Hulu and probably Netflix.

I think TheGrio is free for any carrier that wants to carry it.

I was in a hotel that had DirecTV satellite, and watched a movie or part of one from that channel. Apparently, it is also on Hulu with Live TV.

FrndlyTv used to carry LightTV, the predecessor of it, but chose not to carry it while adding GAC and feTV and channels that skew away from something like TheGrio.

I have emailed them to offer it. Notably, It still offers The Weather Channel that is same ownership as TheGrio.

While it might seem woke to offer it, I was impressed it offers movies and dramas, and think its movie and drama selection can reach a wider audience. It also might be free as mentioned.

I used to watch BET for their music videos to learn about the new releases in music and when they had music video shows that was truly when BET was at it's peak but if you look at BET today you'll see why they have so many Tyler Perry movies and shows is because I really think Tyler Perry wants to secretly buy BET and turn it into TPC or Tyler Perry Channel. Because as you know Tyler Perry is one of the top successful entertainers in the world and if he bought BET he would be so happy with his own network. But if BET could change back to a variety format and focus not so much on sitcoms and movies it would improve it a lot

Somebody elsewhere said (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/what-caused-the-decline-of-bet.5234412/post-91751677) that BET really started to decline when they moved away from being the hub of black culture into a ratings grab (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/what-caused-the-decline-of-bet.5234412/post-91769074). More specifically, they removed the news (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BET_Nightly_News), interviews with black dignitaries, and sports shows concentrating on black athletes, and replaced them with (https://www.bet.com/photo-gallery/t9h4z9/brawls-cheating-and-sex-most-ratchet-love-hip-hop-moments/scb1eh) ratchet (https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:0Ch5inA2yeQJ:https://educationnewsflash.com/what-if-bet-had-actually-done-college-hill-the-right-way-2/&cd=8&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us) content (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programs_broadcast_by_BET).

They also started (perhaps unintentionally) a generational divide between the black community, where they alienated the older black viewers who were with them when they began the channel and sought out the younger viewers, and removed the content that could have bridged the generational divide (i.e. Teen Summit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teen_Summit), etc.).

Just as I suspected and thought I knew BET would be Tyler Perry's channel and as I mentioned the channel will have a name change to TPN "Tyler Perry Network" because it seems that Tyler Perry has the Midas Touch. Because if you ever read the story of King Midas you remember when everything King Midas touched turned to gold? That's one story that describes and fits Tyler Perry to a T. When you get the general picture Tyler Perry first became known as a playwright and his plays became hits then he created the Madea series of movies based on his Madea plays and now he has made a huge name for himself by making sitcoms dramas reality shows and more maybe to follow in the future. I first discovered Tyler Perry when I saw my very first Madea movie Madea's Family Reunion The Movie and I was amazed with how funny it was and I thought to myself "this guy really has talent" and then I collected all the plays and liked them as well but the first one I watched in it's entirety was I Can Do Bad All By Myself and it was an awesome play. I think if this goes well Tyler Perry will buy Ebony Magazine and turn it into his own magazine like Oprah has done with her O Magazine

The channel itself is racist. I am White and have no desire to watch it because the programming isn’t for me. If there was a White Entertainment Television, it would be labeled as racist. Because only Whites can be racists. The Hispanics have stuff like Telemundo and whatever else. Asian people don’t have their own channel because they are not a big enough minority here.

Making TV networks designed for different races, is racist.

Well in that case, TV Land should shut down because it’s discriminatory against people who don’t watch television. And Nick@Nite should be shut down because it’s only on at night and in the early morning hours and that’s offensive to people who don’t wanna watch TV during that time.

Crazy for NAN (Nick at Nite ratings), yet Friends STILL CONTINUES to TOP 200 cable reruns that has been hitting at least 300,000 to viewers to at least 500,000 viewers while NONE of Nickelodeon ratings even topped for it at all!

https://ustvdb.com/networks/tv-land/
TVLand ratings are doing better than nick@nite.

https://ustvdb.com/networks/nick-nite/
Nick@Nite numbers seem to be decent.

While ratings were down, things are never the same, but even more older people STILL has linear cable TV. I think my suggestion is move nick@nite shows to TVLand, and that would be better. Adult shows airing on kids network just doesn't make sense as the block is no longer a family block anymore.

Paramount no longer selling BET (https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/paramount-global-drops-bet-stake-sale-1235698565/#:~:text=According%20to%20The%20Wall%20Street,sheet%2C%20the%20people%20said.%E2%80%9D)

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company announced Wednesday that it would end the bidding process for the unit — which includes VH1 and BET Studios, streamer BET+ and the BET channel —because “a sale wouldn't result in any meaningful deleveraging of its balance sheet, the people said.”

The racist is the person who thinks that a network featuring program based around one group of people can't be enjoyed by them.

And you're dead wrong that Asians don't have their own channel. I'm from NYC and they have plenty. One of then is Sinovision (https://wmbctv.com/sinovision-63-4/). There are also streaming networks dedicated to anime, like Crunchyroll.

I think people are overthinking this. With the start of UPN and now OTA networks like The Grio, BET started getting competition. Also, I don't think younger generations are into network television, anyway. They are all into social media, podcasts, streaming and YouTube. I can't imagine anyone in their twenties who cares about network TV enough to seek out BET.

What I think will happen to BET once Tyler Perry buys it is it will transform itself into TPN "Tyler Perry Network" and will have many of his Madea movies and his other movies like Daddy's Little Girls The Family That Preys and his other movies too. And Tyler Perry will also develop new original sitcoms and dramas exclusive to the channel and revive Madea and make a new Madea sitcom too. Because ever since Tyler Perry was first known as a playwright creating original plays he had this dream of wanting his own company and with The Tyler Perry Company founded I think he also had a fantasy of owning his own TV network too and this is Tyler Perry's longtime dream come true and he will become the top businessman in TV and movies due to this

When BET launched 30 years ago, it was the only channel of it’s kind...that is a network that catered to black viewers. Since then, BET has been a staple on cable tv -- known for its memorable awards show and original programming like ComicView and Teen Summit AND it’s shoddy productions and less than positive portrayals of the black community, the channel has faced the ups and downs of controversy and success over the last three decades.

FBLE5cuZGn0

What happened to BET? How Bet failed us as a black audience. Has BET lost you as a viewer recently? Are you tired of the reruns and Tyler Perry-produced sitcoms? BET was the king of Black Entertainment at one time. Do you still tune into the BET awards year after year hoping to see great memorable performances? Where did your favorite BET hosts go? How could a network fall so fast? BET use to be for the culture. Lets find out where the channel went wrong.

GeKqDLu-rO0

The BET network used to be popular and respected. Over the years it's relevance has faded. In this video I break down the rise and fall of BET.

k7QO-baQy30

BET network became a major success and a platform for the African American community. Around the early 2000s BET hit a gold mine and had everyone tuning in each and every day increasing their viewership as the audience grew more enthusiastic about the new projects that were being aired. So where did the hype go?

UlgOjQck0BQ

BET's TV network has shown a steady decline in viewership for the last 10 plus years and here is why.

A5J36JdM_W0

If you grew up around the early 2000s like I did, then you remember that Black Entertainment Television aka BET used to be your one stop shop for all things Black culture.

With iconic shows like 106 & Park, Sunday’s Best, Big Tigger’s Basement, College Hill, Hell Date, among so much others. On top of BET’s original programming, the channel was also known for their yearly events like the BET awards, Spring Bling, and the Hip Hop Awards.

Despite being such a massive success in the early to mid 2000s, since the 2010s, BET is nothing like it used to be, with people barely tuning into the BET awards, and now it’s just known as the channel that plays Baby Boy 24/7.

In this video I talk about the decline of BET, and my guesses as to what happened, and I make suggestions on how the channel can improve for the future.

What are your thoughts?? What do you think happened to BET??? Is BET past it’s prime? Can the network make a comeback??? What kind of shows would you like to see in the network???

The problem with this thread is this, the initial premise is incorrect:

"What Happened To BET: Why Nobody Watches The Channel Anymore"

this is factually incorrect. Let's take a look:

For the year 2022 Variety provided a listing of the top rated networks, out of 159 networks listed BET was tied for 37, and was number 35 in the coveted 25-49 age group! In 2021 out of 153 networks BET ranked number 43 and again number 35 in the coveted 25-39 age group.

One company that should think seriously about buying BET is the Johnson Corporation "Who also owns Ebony Magazine Upscale Magazine Jet Magazine and a dozen other magazines" Because if the Johnson Corporation were to buy BET they would most likely rename it Jet Television and this would bring them a lot of money. Because Jet Magazine is the second most popular magazine next to Ebony Magazine and if Jet Television were to exist it would score tons of viewers. There is a reason why BET shows lots of Tyler Perry movies and reruns of the sitcom Tyler Perry's House Of Payne and why Tyler Perry has created shows for BET and as I mentioned in my posts in this thread Tyler Perry wanted to secretly buy BET because I think he fantasizes having his own TV channel so his fans can see his movies and plays on TV. But I think whoever decides to buy BET will improve it and make it a variety channel like when it was starting out

In my eyes I also think BET wants to change their image and try to expand themselves by creating spin-off channels as we have seen with BET Jazz in the 80's and Centric "now BET Her" in the 2000's and when BET Jazz was launched BET had an empire on their hands and when BET Jazz no longer existed they kept the empire going with the launch of Centric in the 2000's and with Centric BET added a mix of classic sitcoms variety shows and reruns of Steve Harvey's Family Feud which I thought was odd because when you put reruns of Steve Harvey's Family Feud on any channel like GSN or BET it makes a huge success for the channel. But what I really think BET lacks is original game shows because in the 90's BET had the game show Triple Threat which was a remake of a 70's game show of the same name and if BET had game shows the audience would enjoy them. And also BET tried to compete with HSN and QVC by launching BET Shop which wasn't even a shopping channel but a show devoted to shopping but BET Shop should've been a standalone channel itself but once this format of BET ended they went to their current format of showing movies such as Boomerang Coming To America Johnson Family Vacation and Tyler Perry's Madea series of movies and Tyler Perry movies and sitcoms have been million-dollar hits for BET itself and this format seems to be a hit for them. But as other networks compete with BET such as TV One and Bounce BET will survive
