View Full Version : Sad anniversaries
Luckymama58 08-17-2002, 12:11 PM Hi gang,
Unless you live under a rock, I am sure all of you have seen the deluge of press coverage Elvis has gotten this week, 25 years after his death. I was not a huge Elvis fan, but I did like his music and admired his talent. I don't take anything away from all the remembrances that have gone on all week. He sure deserves it for the contributations he made to the entertainment industry.
I guess I am starting this thread because, in the midst of all the remembrances, I was remembering that this year marked Freddie's 25th anniversary too. I know he never had the chance to make the world wide impact that Elvis did in his much longer career, but it did get me wishing Freddie had gotten this much press on his anniversary. And that got me to thinking, if Freddie was given the number of years that Elvis had to develop and impact the world in the entertainment business, what do you think Freddie would have been remembered for. We all know he was remembered for his standup comedy and his TV show as well as numerous TV guest appearances and the one TV movie he made. But I think that the only thing the world really remembers about Freddie was that he was the father of Jr.
So I guess I am asking you, Freddie's friends and fans, given Freddie's talent and enormous potential, what impact on the entertainment world would Freddie have made, if his career had spanned as many years as say, Elvis. Any feedback?
hue_mee 08-17-2002, 02:18 PM What gets me is that Freddie and Elvis died the same year. It's like they totally pinned Freddies death as a drug induced suicide and Elvis died of natural causes which was NOT the case!!! Elvis was more because of overindulgence..which is kinda what freddie died of too, if you think about it. Too much of a good thing (fame). Elvis did have a big impact on the entertainment world, so I guess he deserves all of this attention, just like any big star, but I only wish Freddie could have stuck around long enough to be more of a footnote in the history of the entertainment world. He sure had the talent to be more. It was never fully realized, tho. Very sad. Honestly I can see him now just like Ron Howard, directing big movies and staring in them too. Maybe even doing more in his talent of song and dance. Maybe he would he would be directing his son's movies and getting better parts for him. Seeing him take an active role in JR.s career. I can see Freddie taking an active part in the Latino community helping out other Latino actors like Laz who are just starting out! I would like to thank Luckymama for being apart of this discussion and helping me get this off my chest!
Luckymama58 08-17-2002, 02:39 PM AMEN!!!!!
MariposaLKB 08-17-2002, 02:44 PM Thanx mucho to you both for all the insights! I love the idea of Freddie guiding his son's career and getting him better parts--God knows he could use them LOL!
There are similarities in the reasons for the deaths of both Elvis and Freddie, to be sure. But at the risk of sticking my neck WAAAY out here, I would have to say that Freddie was the greater talent. He and Elvis could both play several instruments, but Freddie wrote music, had a beautiful singing voice with a wide range (Elvis's voice just never appealed to me. It was not that strong or well-trained--the lack of training was not his fault, though, I realize that.), and he apparently demonstrated an ability to act in several genres--comedy, crime drama, Shakespeare, Neil Simon--unfortunately not all of them captured on film (some were high school productions or during summer breaks).
Elvis might have been able to do all those things as far as music and acting if given the chance, but what remains on the record does not give much indication that he could have. I think Freddie would still be having an impact all over the entertainment business if he were with us!
Just my two centavos and humble opinion--no rotten tomatoes my way, por favor LOL!
hue_mee 08-17-2002, 08:39 PM In honor to all the hype that is happening with the anniversary of Elvis's death. I would like to present my tribute to Freddie!
LOL! Yeah Babee!
Danisel331 08-18-2002, 02:55 AM HI! LOL
I'm just jumping and hopping all over here. Ok let me get back on my soapbox! :::Hopping up on the box:::
It's rather odd to me that Elvis and Freddie both died the same year because they were a lot a like. At least to me they were. They were both close to their mothers, they both wanted to become a star, they both had only one child whom they adored, they both had talent that was undeniable and they both became their own worst enemy. They both could've done just about anything they wanted, but both seemed rather type-cast because of their background. There are just so many similiarites!
As for where Freddie would be now, I think he would be like Edward James Olmos, everywhere there is something remotely related to the Latin culture. LOL It would definitely be interesting to see him writing, directing, producing, and hopefully still acting. :happyface
OK :::jumping down again::: :D Just added my opinon!:D
Cheryl Harrell 08-18-2002, 03:17 AM Oh wow. I too had noticed the similarities between Elvis & Freddie. You got that so right...
I love your picture of Elvis & Freddie. That fits me & my hubby perfectly. Hubby Mike is Elvis biggest fan & collects everything on him & has ever since he first started out. He was watching an Elvis rememberance on tv the other day & I saw this sad look in his eyes & I said it's just like it was for all of us & Freddie isn't it... So many similarities between Elvis fans & us. Exccept we don't have a Graceland...
I'm not really an Elvis fan but I do like him just fine & think he's a great person & entertainer. Mike just adores him. He has his stars & I have mine. :) It's so sad what happened to them both...
hue_mee 08-18-2002, 02:16 PM Excellent Point Dani!! LOL! :notworthy
hue_mee 08-18-2002, 03:50 PM Why did I post that sooo big! Oh, nothing like going blind looking at Freddie! Hee hee!
I was thinking of the simialrities as well
both died in 77 both did drugs including those perscribed by their trusted Doctors!
Both were so lonely even though surrounded by people , they could sing and play instruments loved their mothers believed in God
Loved to be with woman
had dark hair and were very kind and gereous men
both wanted to become serious actors and were criticall of their own work and both divorced or were in the process in Freddie's case and both left one child
hue_mee 08-18-2002, 08:07 PM Joy you are absolutely right and how errie is that! Thank you!
Cheryl Harrell 08-19-2002, 01:14 AM Actualy, I'm glad you posted it that big cuz it would make a perfect picture to put on a t-shirt & being the larger size you can re-size it to make it the right size. If It were too small, then I'd have a hard time making it larger. Freddie makes me go blind looking at him anyway. He's so hot LOL! Looking Good!
Speaking of pictures on t-shirts Cheryl, do you still have that transfer of Freddie in the pink shirt?
Prince 08-20-2002, 12:20 AM Well I believe if Freddie Prinze were here today he would be busy dusting off his many Emmys he won for best actor in a comedy series for CATM. Then he would shake up the old Pledge can and move on to his Tony awards for his work on Broadway...singing and dancing his way into our hearts. Of course he had to end his Broadway stint after he became Johnny Carson's replacement on the Tonight Show....another Emmy mind you. Then there is Vegas....watch out Wayne Newton, because you ain't seen nothing yet. The Prinzeman has arrived. Of course Tom Cruise had to hang up his acting shoes once Freddie decided to try his talent on the big screen. Move over Emmy's and Tony's...make room for Oscar. Doggone he's talented huh???? (But we knew that!!). And last but not least...there is the Kennedy Center Honors with President Bush and his wife..giving Freddie an Humanitarian award for his work with the Latino community...because he never forgot where he came from. That's real class....and class is what Freddie was all about.
Thank you and...good night!!!
Karen64 08-20-2002, 12:52 AM Well said, Macca! If Freddie were here today, that's exactly what he would be doing! Along with giving Freddie Jr some fatherly advice and nudging him and Sarah to get married and have his grandchild already!
I remember the day Elvis died. It was enrollment day for school-I was in junior high. I wasn't into Elvis; I couldn't really understand all the fuss!
Another similarity that I don't think anyone mentioned was they both came from somewhat humble beginnings...
Cheryl Harrell 08-20-2002, 02:44 AM Don't worry I still have that Freddie T-shirt transfer to send ya... :) Sorry I haven't sent it out yet but we're still here at Mikes sisters in Ohio & it's at home so it maybe awhile. Sorry about that... :)
Freddie Jr is marrie to Michelle they got married in a small ceremony in Vegas. Sound familair?
Luckymama58 08-21-2002, 12:46 PM According to the radio this morning, they are getting married this weekend in an undisclosed place in the Carribean. I had heard they were already married, in Vegas, but that was an unsubstantiated report, so I don't know. I do know that family and close friends are invited to this weekend's events. I was thinking since Maria is in PR, maybe she might attend? I sure hope so.
hue_mee 08-21-2002, 04:43 PM That would be awesome if Maria was there to witness her Grandsons Wedding!
Cheryl Harrell 08-22-2002, 01:54 AM I too had read they had gotten married in Vegas but then I read that that wasn't true & didn't know what to believe. I did read that he wanted to get married & was pressing her about it & she didn't want to marry just yet. Doesn't that sound familiar? He is definately his fathers son. :) I hope Maria is well enough with her diabetes to attend. Good luck kids! :) Freddie will be looking down form heaven I am sure... :)
