CBS wanted Norman Lear to tone down the Archie Bunker character's language. Norman Lear refused to tone down the Archie Bunker Character because he felt by that point of the series, the character was too set in his ways to change. So CBS agreed to move the show to 9pm out of the Family Time Hour.-

The show would not air at 8pm until three years later in October of 1978 when Stephanie was added to the cast
