This is a list I am compiling of American television situation comedies from 1947-1979. I'd like to go beyond that, throughout the 1980s, 90s and so on, but let's face it, I don't have a good track record for finishing what I start. So, for now, we shall focus on just these decades.

If you know of any shows I'm missing (or any info that's incorrect), please let me know. I want this list to be as complete as possible.

This list is still being worked on. So, I'm not close to done yet.

Thank you. I started this list years ago but never finished.

I looked up sitcoms based on the shows listed here on Sitcoms Online, typing in List of Television Situation Comedies on Wikipedia, and my original source was "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1946-Present".

The chore was putting them in release date order.

Might as well include Batman (Adam West) in the list.

Might as well include Batman (Adam West) in the list.

I had it on my list originally and then took it off. I just wasn't sure if it would be classified "sitcom". But since it's been requested, I'll gladly put it back, as it's clearly a comedy.

YES!!!

I was a little afraid to put that because I know of the controversy on these boards, lol. But I had to do it. It is technically a spin-off.

I have decided to stop at 1979 for right now and go back and include all comedies. This is why I never finish anything. My brain is so scattered, lol.

I'll include comedy/variety shows, cartoons, etc. I'll also mention what genre each show is.

I'll probably end up breaking this thread down by the decades and place them in their respective boards so that this doesn't get too long here.

Wow! What a great list. I'm searching for episodes of the obscure ones to watch. On you spin off list you can add, "Wait 'til Your Father gets Home " which came from "Love American Style"

I don't think that "Window on Main Street" was a comedy/sitcom.

Might as well include The Flintstones and Jetsons, since both were popular animated sitcoms in primetime.

From my understanding it's a comedy/drama, which I'm including.

Now, I've decided to go back and add comedy/variety shows and cartoons into the mix. So, I have a lot more work ahead of me. This list is now officially under construction, lol.

I've decided to include cartoons (comedy ones). So, yes, I'll be adding them soon.

Let's not forget Top Cat (1 season) and The Bugs Bunny Show (2); I also think of Jonny Quest but it wasn't a comedy.

I agree with Top Cat since it like the Flintstones, Jetsons, and Wait til Your Father gets Home had a sitcom format. Bugs Bunny show was just showing individual cartoon and Johnny Quest, as you said, was an adventure show not a comedy.

There are probably not a lot of cartoons that fit a sitcom format, at least for this list. Now when you get into the '80's to current there will be many starting with " The Simpsons "
