I've asked for donations only one time (way back in 2003) in our nearly 24 year history. I don't have any other viable options until I can move it to a more affordable server and host. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

The last 3-4 months have been a struggle to pay our server bill due to some of the lowest amounts that the advertising and Amazon affiliate sales (they dried up when we stopped doing DVD reviews) have ever generated. I'm not sure if it's declining traffic and paid pageviews, advertisers paying far less than they used to, limited available ad inventory (I often see pages with 0-2 ads instead of the maximum of 3), or the rise of people using ad blockers (please consider whitelisting our domain if you use one). December is normally when the online advertisers pay 2x or 3x the amount, but it never happened this year.

I'm currently short on January's server bill. I pay each month up front. I can pay it as late as January 7. I thought about moving it to another server this month, but I don't even have the money or time to do it right now. I'll have to do some research to find a more affordable server with more memory to maybe move it by the end of January. The server we're on now is expensive and not a very good value. Once I can get it moved to a more reasonably priced server, we should be in better shape.

I plan on buying a mobile/responsive theme for our forums with some of the proceeds.

TJ: I see that many forums ask for funds to support the forum. I sure HOPE all or most of the longtime commited members pitch in. I feel they will.

Money is tighter everywhere and I have no clue what it takes keeping these forums operating.

I know many years ago on one of my first forums the owners had to close down due to funds, it was a good forum and they did not ask for help...just closed it. Had the owner asked for funds from the members, I believe it could still be alive, I would have donated as I so enjoyed the board.

TJ: You've put a TON into this forum so the dedication is certainly there. And thanks for allowing me to stay on in spite of the issues...

Unfortunately, it even REQUIRES a mobile number to do this! Which is the reason I was kicked off Pay Pal in the first place after being on there for 10-15 years. They should do security like amazon does, by sending an email when someone logs on. Simple!

Anyway, I'm planning on finally getting a mobile phone soon. But not just to make Pay Pal happy.

I've seen your address somewhere on the site--let us know, and i will send a check if OK.

I know others who have ditched Pay Pal due to the mobile phone requirement.

I looked at other donation sites such as Patreon, but they take out higher fees. I thought PayPal was the best option with the most people using it. I wasn't sure if they required an account or mobile phone number.

A check, money order or concealed cash would be fine.

I don't have any plans on closing it down. I know money is tight for many people with inflation.

I'll be better able to pay for it monthly when I find a more affordable host. I'm sure I can find a better one with more memory. It will run faster with more memory.

Ok, done. Lois now has some of my money.

The bad news is my refrigerator is breaking down and leaking from the freezer, so I need a new one in the next few weeks. Disposable cash was being earmarked for that. But I did what I could for now.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling and making the first donation. They take out 30 cents + a 2.9% fee. They have an option to let people cover the fees, but I turned it off. It will be enough just for the donation amount.

PayPal was easy for me because I already have an account. Obviously there’d be a few more steps for someone going in for the first time and having to sign up.

Sitcoms Online story—- When I bought some stuff from TeeVeeCloset it was thru PayPal and he made me pay the fees. But luckily besides that he’s a fine upstanding citizen and never caused anyone any problems.

It has been a while since TeeVeeCloset last logged in and posted. I know he was battling some health issues. Hopefully he's doing ok if he's still lurking here. He has been missed.

Does Amazon offer a finder fee when linking digital content? With DVD sales drying up you would think that Amazon may have a program for linking digital content for purchase.

I did send a donation. PayPal included the processing fee in addition to the donation.

Yes. They do pay an affiliate commission on digital content. They also pay a bounty fee for Amazon Prime trials and some of their other services. I should put up some digital content links.

Any items (DVDs, CDs, books, electronics, etc.) ordered via our Amazon links within 24 hours of clicking on them should pay an affiliate commission. I see more orders for food and household items than DVDs these days.

Thanks for the PayPal donation!

Thanks to everyone who sent a donation via PayPal or snail mail so far.

Your generous donations have been put to good use.

1. I paid for January's server bill. I used PayPal's Pay in 4 option. I made the first of 4 bi-weekly payments of $49.75. I have enough for 2 more payments. I should be fine.

2. I renewed our domain name for another year for $19.99. It was set to expire on January 12. Next year will mark our 25th Anniversary online.

3. I bought a mobile/responsive theme for our forums for $49.45 with a 50% discount code. I need to install and test it out before making it officially available next week.

I'm probably going to move it to a more affordable server ($100 or less) and host near the end of the month.

Any donations to help with our monthly operating expenses going forward would still be welcome.

:thanks:

Yes. Any items (even VHS tapes which people sometimes buy) ordered within 24 hours of clicking on a link should credit and will help.

-------------------------------------------

From their Associates FAQ:

How long do visitors have to add an item to their Shopping Cart after clicking on one of my Amazon.com links until I no longer earn commission income on their purchase?

You earn commission income on any qualifying items placed in a customer's Shopping Cart within 24 hours of their arrival at Amazon.com via your Associates link. However, this 24-hour window closes once the customer submits his order or reenters Amazon.com through another Associate's link. Once the window is closed, you will not earn commission income on any subsequent purchases. However, if the customer then returns to Amazon.com through one of your Associates links, this opens a new 24-hour window.

It is of course possible that a customer may arrive at Amazon.com via your Associates link, add an item to his Shopping Cart, and then leave Amazon.com without placing an order. As long as the item was added to the customer's Shopping Cart during this 24-hour window, you will still earn a referral commission if the order is placed before the Shopping Cart expires (usually after 90 days). The referral commission will not be credited to your Associates account until the customer has purchased the item, accepted delivery, and remitted full payment to Amazon.com.

So on the links you provide for Amazon DVD purchases maybe you can somehow indicate that the purchasing item could be of a different format. No sure how you would do that but might be worth listing in some way.

If I had $1 for every Ahsoka thread (485 and counting), I could pay for 2 1/2 months worth of hosting. He would need to post 9,999,999,515 more threads to buy ABC.

In the coming weeks, I am going to be making some Amazon purchases using the links on this site. Are you still being paid from Amazon if we use the links?

Some people have sent checks, money orders or concealed cash in the mail. I could receive a Visa or Mastercard eGift card from a site like Giftcards.com or GiftCardGranny.com which I could use to help pay for our web hosting costs.

I saw the option in Cloudflare. I don't know if those companies with the AI training bots would pay when they have already been scraping content for free for years. We need less bots on here, not more. The only bots that send back any signficant traffic are Google and Bing. I have most of the others blocked.

It hasn't exactly been the golden age for online advertising the last few months. I've hit records lows since I've been using Google AdSense exclusively. I see others are experiencing the same decline in ad revenue from reading webmaster forums. There isn't a large inventory of ads. The few available ads are paying peanuts. Then you add in all the people using ad blockers. It's a recipe for disaster.

I will have to look at some other advertising options unless things pick up in the next few months.

December - Traditionally the best month due to holiday shopping, it was the lowest December ever.
January - I made the minimum by $25.
February - down 66% from the same period last year - I'm $10 short of the $100 minimum payment threshold amount with three days left in the short month.

Thanks to everyone who has sent donations or ordered items through our Amazon links to help keep the site afloat.
