View Full Version : Shows that TV Guide Missed for its "Worst of All Time" List
http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20823
I'm partially bringing this up after my thread concerning other "bad" MTV shows to go along w/ "The Tom Green Show" which made TV Guide's list and a seperate list that focused on the top 10 worst sports related programs (besides the XFL) of all time:
*Baby Talk-I would put this show on the list before I would put "Baby Bob." For those who are wondering, this sitcom w/ the gimmick of a talking infant (w/ Tony Danza doing the voice) aired on ABC's TGIF line-up back in the early 1990s. It should also be noted that the mother was played by two different actresses in-between the seasons and it left another mark on George Clooney's "I would like to keep this off of my resume please!" list (besides I guess the "Facts of Life" and "Batman & Robin").
*The Star Wars Holiday Special-I wasn't even born when this show (which supposedly was made without George Lucas' seal of approval even though Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford appeared in-character) made its first and only "official" appearance on TV. It was also never officially released on home video or DVD as it grown to mythical proportions (partially because it gave us the first ever appearance of Boba Fett via an animated short).
*The Magic Hour-If you're going to mention Chevy Chase's ill-fated foray in late-night TV then you seriously have to also have to put basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson's try under consideration also (both came from Fox by-the-way). Nothing can't be more ironic than the fact that the highest rated episode featured Magic's biggest critic, Howard Stern & company.
*Battlestar 1980-I've never seen it but from what I've heard a lot of the "Battlestar Galactica" fanboys would seriously like to pretend that this much cheaper follow-up never existed.
*Richard Bey-This show can probably be best described as "The Jerry Springer Show" on acid.
*The Power Rangers-At least if you're going to look from the standpoint of mind-numbingly cheesy yet long enduring kids' shows a la "Barney & Friends."

Brian Damage 08-16-2002, 06:24 PM Baywatch Nights- A life guard by day and a private detective at night. When does this guy sleep?
Richard Bey's Night Games- This was a spinoff of The Richard Bey Show. A very bad spinoff complete with Bikini Tug-O-War and Pie eating contests.
The New Odd Couple- This was exactly like the old odd couple complete with the exact same storylines. The only thing "New" about it was the fact that Felix and Oscar were now black.
The Bionic Dog- After the sucess of The Bionic Man and Woman, they created a Bionic...Dog?!?
The Jackie Thomas Show- The only reason why Tom Arnold was given this sitcom is because he was married to Roseanne who was red hot at the time.
Jordan 08-16-2002, 06:31 PM "Working" the former Fred Savage sitcom (if you can call it that). I thought it was the worst series ever created.
SBTB Geek 08-16-2002, 08:29 PM "All About Us"
"Malibu, CA"
"Power Rangers"
"AHHH! Real Monsters"
*edit*!
- I came to the conclusion that "Punky Brewster" wasn't ONE FOURTH as bad as the other programs I listed.
I apologize to the loyal PB fans.
"Friends"
"Will & Grace"
"The Brady Bunch"
"Frasier"
"Just Shoot Me"
"Dharma and Greg"
"Becker"
"Port Charles"
"NYPD Blue"
"JAG"
"ER"
Sitcomwriter 08-16-2002, 10:31 PM "The Beverly Hillbillies"
"The Andy Griffith Show"
"Good Times"
"The Brady Bunch"

Personally I loved Galactica 1980. But then I like Kent McCord.
factsoflife 08-17-2002, 01:17 AM how in the world can you put Punky Brewster on the list? Punky Brewster is one of the most beloved series of the 80's.
Other shows that should have been on the list-
Jerry Springer
Caroline In The City
Suddenly Susan
Northern Exsposuer
Due South
The Simpsons
Married With Children
That's Life
Kate Brasher
CSI
Touched By An Angel
Promised Land
Titans
The Street
Anada Lewis Show
The Osborunes
Will and Grace Fanatic 08-17-2002, 01:29 AM Every single UPN sitcom except the Parkers. And all the sitcoms from the 60's except Dick Van Dyke.

Yep, that was pretty bad. I haven't seen it since it first aired, which is probably for the best, although the animated short featuring Boba Fett was pertty well done. If they devoted the entire half hour to an animated Star Wars special instead of the horroble special they did, millions of Star Wars fans would be able to sleep better.
Even though it is or never will be available on video (George Lucas has stated that) bootleg copies are available.

Maybe you didn't see the list, but Jerry Springer was #1
LucyFan 08-17-2002, 06:40 PM I think these should have been on the list:
~ "TAXI"
~ "Maude"
~ "The Beverly Hillbillies"
~ "My Favorite Martian"
~ "Barney Miller"
~ "The Nanny"
That is all I can think of for right now . . .

Taxi, Maude???? These are two of the most revolutionary and groundbreaking series ever.. how could they be considered the worst... The Beverly Hillbilles, Barney Miller, they are classics... however i agree with you about The Nanny.

My Favorite Martian is a pretty good show. It was better in black and white though. I think it lost some of its punch when it started filming in color.

I agree. Good show, good cast.
Speaking of aliens...what about Meego, or that one that was on ABC at the same time as that one with the angel (you know, the kid who ate the bad cheeseburger...Maureen McCormack was in it.)
Sitcomwriter 08-17-2002, 11:43 PM Wrong Dawsongirl.Meego aired on CBS.That Maureen Mccormack show was "Teen Angel" which also starred Jerry Van Dyke later on (Who also starred on "You Wish" at the same time playing a Genie).

Thanks JT. :)

boechsner 08-19-2002, 02:55 AM They left out, in my opinion:
All UPN sitcoms
All WB sitcoms
Full House
The Andy Griffith Show
Three's Company
Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.
GoldenFamilyTies 08-19-2002, 03:58 AM I think that just because you don't personally enjoy a show doesn't mean it should be on a "The Worst Sitcoms of All Time" list. Some of the shows some [people listed were #1 in the ratings at some point in their history... so that does say a lot for how good the show is. There's a lot of sitcoms I don't like at all, but I have respect for them because they WERE good sitcoms, just not ones I enjoy personally.
Just my opinion. :)

That says ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING, just because a show is # 1 doesn't make it good. I mean Caroline In The City, Suddenly Susan, Veronica's Closet and The Singel Guy were all number one at one point and they were horrible shows.

How exactly does that say absolutely nothing?! It means that it was the MOST WATCHED SHOW for that season! It means that a lot of people happen to like that show. According to you, getting to #1 isn't an accomplishment, it seems like...
Janice 08-19-2002, 02:16 PM I think being the #1 show is quite an accomplishment, no matter how you slice it. I also can dislike a show, but realize it's well done. A good example for me is The Facts of Life. I don't care for the show, and that's putting it mildly, but I know the show has a legion of fans and was a huge success, so I respect the show. It doesn't mean I'll start tuning in though.
Same thing goes for Mash and a few other shows.

Reaching Number 1 is an accomplisment, but just because a show is # 1 doesn't make it good. A show can be truly horrible, and still be popular. Being Popular does not quality make. A show can be truly brillant and not be a number one show, for example My So-Called life was hailed by critics as the best show of the season and was a nielsen loser, whereas Veronica's Closet was considered a really bad show, yet still was a ratings hit and became the number 3 show on TV. my point is that, just because a show is popular doesn't make it good. A show can be truly inspid and still be # 1.

I don't think all of the people that would be watching the popular shows would think it was horrible. It might not be the best, but I wouldn't exactly put it on a "Worst Sitcoms of All Time" list.
The Andy Giffith Show (I saw it listed here a couple times) was in the top ten its whole run, and is extremely popular at TV Land and gets good ratings. It doesn't appeal to a wide variety of people, but it's still not a bad show at all.
I'm seeing your point here, but I'm just saying if a show reaches #1 it's not gonna be a horrible show. It might not be the best, but it's also not gonna be horrible.

These shows were never #1.
How about Wednesdays 9:30/8:30 Central? The name alone is one of the all time worst.

Not always true there have been some really bad shows reach number one, often times shows get good ratings soley because of thier timeslots, exampel, Suddenly Susan was # 3 in the 1996-1997 season ONLY because it was in the Thursday 930 Time slot (after Seinfeild, before ER) and that is the only reason it got decent ratings, the following year when it was moved to Monday's 800 it didn't even make the top 30. Another classic example is the 1997 NBC series UNION SQUARE which was a truly horrible show and was number 8 of the season, based only because it was in the NBC Thursday 830 timeslot (after friends, before Seinfield). So reaching number one isn't that big a deal and is often time achieved by truly bad series.

First of all, it's Gilligan, hun, learn to spell the show's name before you start to knock it, and who is the one that blows up everytime someone mentions how much they HATE "Friends"? You know I oughtta annoy the heck out of you because you said any Soap opera....

None of those shows you mentioned were ever #1, they were top 5 shows but not #1. It takes a really good show to be #1.

Hey my point still stands, just because a show gets good ratings doesn't make it good. I mean was Veronica's Closet, The Singel Guy or Union Square any good? No. Its say a lot, far from nothing.
