View Full Version : Where were you and what were you doing when you heard about Elvis Presley's death?

As most of us know, today marks the 25th anniversary when the King, Elvis Presley left the building and this world forever. Do you remember the place and time when you heard the news of Elvis' death?

It was 25 years ago today around 2 PM in a club called "Cheers" inside the Holiday Inn. I was with my brother's band helping them get set up for that night's gig. Suddenly, this guy walks in and we were surprised because the club was closed at that time. The guy was walking very slow and had a very serious, gloomy expression on his face. We all looked at him waiting for him to say something. He then muttered in a very sad tone, "Have you guys heard? Elvis is dead." He walked out the same way he came in. The news left us, to say the least, at a loss for words, astonished, and perplexed.

It's good to know that young people like you, even though you weren't born yet, are Elvis fans. That shows that a great performer will have fans even in future generations. :)

Elvis died two months before I was born, so needless to say I don't remember it.

I think I kind of inherited my love for Elvis. I'm the 3rd generation of my family that is an Elvis fan. My grandma was a fan of E. My mom is a fan of E. I'm a fan too. I would love to go to Graceland someday, after I save up a ton of money. I know I would probably want to get every piece of memorbillia they sell in the gift shops. lol

I have my favorite singers and bands, but sometimes I get sick of them. Elvis is different. I bought my first Elvis cd when I was about 12 or either 13. I'm 18 now, and I'm still devoted to the King. :)

Sorry to hear that, Penny Lane. Well, at least they left this world almost at the same time.

Boy, it seems to me that I'm the only person on these message boards that was born before 1977 (I was 15 years old then). Now I know how being old feels. :(

Let's see... I was 16 years old. The date was Aug. 16, so it was summer vacation.:) I'm almost sure I was at home relaxing and trying to not think about school resuming in a few weeks. Elvis passed away late in the afternoon so the news at 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM probably reported it then.

Incidentally, I still have some National Enquirer papers from Aug. '77 which had some Elvis stories- including the one with a photo of Elvis in the funeral home. I did not save any regular newspaper articles (but I do have one or two from the day after John Wayne passed away; May or June of 1979).

I was coming back from somewhere and my younger brother had told me that Elvis had died. Seeing that I was huge into KISS and Black Sabbath at the time, I really didn't get emotional about it, I thought it was too bad, but I felt that Elvis was for country types or whatever, he really didn't fit the current definition of what was rock'n'roll back in 1977 (I was 14 at the time). That day my older brother told me to go up in the morning and pick up tickets for Styx, who would be playing in Seattle soon. That was a fun day the next day. I liked going up there, because I liked looking at guitar shops. But Elvis...he seemed a little before my time, but I try to get some idea of what he was all about... My sister-in-law is big into him.

Aaahhh, the mid 70s. Those were such good times.

I wasn't a fan of Elvis either, but because I am a musician, I had to go we the flow.

Half of me was in one of my mother's ovaries, and the other half hadn't yet been created by my father's gonads.
