View Full Version : Christmas Song Grievance Thread
James28 12-15-2022, 12:56 AM Any Christmas/Holiday song you hate for some reason (whether it's the degree of the song's radio airtime nowadays, its lyrical content, etc.)?
I was never a big fan of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". According to somebody (ChrisLC) at the American Top 40 Fun & Games Site, This should be a happy time of the year for children. So how do they internalize a song that supposedly celebrates Santa Claus but is actually pretty much nothing but repeated warnings about the consequences of misbehavior and a seemingly vengeful Santa Claus?
Also, when I was younger, I thought its lyrics implied that if you cried or pouted, you will automatically be considered "naughty" by Santa Claus, and therefore will not receive the gifts you have been wanting to get for Christmas... at all. Rather cruel.

Bingo, not only is it the worse Christmas song of all time, but since it has been done by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Bruce Springsteen, from the Supremes to Mariah Carey, you can be sure you will hear it played at least once an hour on any of the all Christmas music stations.
JO Sweet Heart 12-16-2022, 02:31 PM I have never been a fan of "Santa Baby" or the "All I Want For Christmas Is You" song that starts out "Take back the Holly and mistletoe and silver bells on strings." However, if I have to listen to those two songs, I prefer listening to LeAnn Rimes sing them from her first Christmas album in 2004 named What A Wonderful World.
God bless you and LeAnn always!!!
Holly (a day one fan of her)
P.S. "Baby, It's Cold Outside" has never been a favorite either.
Little_stinker 12-19-2022, 12:38 PM How can "Happy X-mas" by John Lennon not be considered the absolute worst, what passes for a, Christmas song? It absolutely mystifies me why it isn't mentioned more often. He didn't have to inject politics into the matter.
Zoneboy 12-19-2022, 06:32 PM If I hear Trace Adkins try to sing "I'll Be Home for Christmas" one more time I may just lose it.
TSMIV 12-19-2022, 08:23 PM Any version of the Little Drummer Boy is obnoxious. Wham's Last Christmas is one of my favorites, but all these "modern" remakes of it suck. There was only one George Michael.

Coincidentally, I was just discussing Santa Baby a little while ago with some people on a different forum I'm also a member of. I really don't like it either, although I can tolerate the original by Eartha Kitt better than other versions of it (especially Madonna's which is the absolute worst!). I did a little research on the song, and Eartha Kitt released Santa Baby for the first time way back in 1953! I really had no idea the song was that old.
The other song you mentioned you don't like is All I Want For Christmas Is You by Vince Vance and The Valiants (not to be confused with the Mariah Carey song with the same title). I didn't know LeAnn Rimes had did a remake of it. Anyways I really like the original version of it. But the singer on it isn't a guy named Vince Vance, it's a woman named Lisa (sorry I've forgotten what her last name is). But anyways I really enjoy the song myself.

biffbronson 12-20-2022, 04:59 AM I don't truly hate any, but it annoys me when a cover messes with the lyrics. When Dean Martin recorded "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" he changed Rudolph to "Rudy" a couple of times. Be faithful to the original, it's a classic...!
There are a few for which I want to watch the video at the same time, like Wham's "Last Christmas." It just seems like I need to have the visuals.

Let me guess. Your area gets his Shriner's commercial played a lot. Sadly, I have only seen it twice in my area. In other words, I couldn't be anymore jealous of you. I'd rather hear him sing it compared to those kids, especially since he is one of the few who sings it the right way. He says, "Please have snow and mistletoe and presents under the tree." when so any other people say presents on the tree including those kids.
God bless you and Trace always!!!

Caroline13 12-20-2022, 01:35 PM I don't hate and especially music. I have lost the "spirit" years ago.
Give me Felice Navidad as it's a nice message and a fun piece of music.
icecream 12-20-2022, 05:19 PM Santa Baby is a hideous song. :bash:
Yes, I do recall the most famous reindeer of all. Now can you please stop asking me?
