I was just wondering, has anyone else on this board ever notice Freddie lisping from time to time or is it maybe that I am wearing my tapes out? Heaven for bid!

Joy, you are hearing correctly! Having studied Spanish under some native speakers, I believe it comes from being bilingual. Spanish involves speaking mostly at the front of one's mouth (as opposed to English, which has some sounds--because of its Germanic roots--that are made more at the back). This is probably the reason Freddie (and others for whom Spanish was their first language) lisps a bit when speaking English. I have always thought that Freddie's lisp was particularly unique, though--not just turning "s" into "th", but there is something else involved that I can't quite explain.

Coincidentally, when talking to Laz about what was involved in "becoming" Freddie, one of the first things he mentioned was that lisp! And I must say that as Freddie, he had the voice (including the lisp), the laugh, the mannerisms, everything, just perfect! Now if only he could have found a better wig LOL! (Sorry, Laz, don't mean to embarrass you so publicly--just my two centavos!)

Reading this particular post about Freddies lisp. I just happen to be listening to "To be with you" Freddie is singing back up of course. I don't hear any lisp, just his gorgous voice drifting away!:eyes: :eyes:

I LOVE his lisp, very noticeable but very sexy! I love it when he would say something in an effeminate way

---like the Aunt Connie episode where he says to Ed, "No wonder.., look at the way you're dressed!" (when he had 3 jackets on), or the episode with Jose Feliciano, where he says, "Ed, ..oh, Ed, DEAR!"

His voice and the quirky way he talked are almost a sexy as his sweet face!

I'm not exactly sure if it was a lisp that he had but, in the pictures he's smiling in, he looked as if he had horse teeth. Horse teeth meaning they didn't appear to have any gaps and were all perfectly shaped the same and were also somewhat long.

Especially in the photo below which is attached to this post. I love that photo! Can't you tell?:happyface

I read somewhere that he had a gap in his front teeth & after he got on CATM, once he got enough money he had them fixed. & That's how he supposedly got such perfect teeth...

So by the time he was photographed for the photo above, he had already gotten them fixed? And weren't they originally long?

I've seen some of the pictures when he was in his late teens and his teeth had somewhat of a unique(I guess) form to them.I'm not sure as to whether he had some extra teeth in which had grown inbetween some of the others or if he just had a simple overbite.

The way I thought it was is that the drugs ruined his teeth and he may have had a partial made for the front to make them appear perfect....I don't know this for sure but in those days thats what actors did.

No offense But i don't think there can be a partial or full plate that could look that gorgous cause he is LOOOOOOOOING GOOOOOOOD!

He did have a space between his front teeth in the beginning of the show. He definately had work done. No matter what picture you see of him, he will ALWAYS be gorgeous in my eyes.

I don't know about you all, but I liked the way he looked better before he had any work done on his teeth. Some imperfections can be sexy....:D

I have always thought that Freddie must have had some pretty extensive work done on his teeth, evidently between the first and second seasons. While I do agree that his smile was sweet and sexy even before this was done, it appears early that on his two front teeth are a bit crooked (where they meet in the middle they seem to incline toward the back of his mouth in a sort of "V"), and they are a bit on the small side (his gums are more obvious when he grins)--as well as not being perfectly white. (Not sure if part of the reason was damage from drugs--was he using anything prior to starting CATM that was capable of causing such damage?)

Beginning with the episode in which Chico wants to install a bathtub in the garage, however, his teeth are large, perfect, and very white (and he shows them off a lot more, grinning wider and laughing with his mouth open hugely)! I don't think anyone would have gone so far as to suggest that he have several front teeth pulled and wear a partial, since he was sooo young, and braces would not have been an option then for someone in the public eye. But he may have had the teeth capped which were most visible when he smiled--probably during the hiatus between the first two seasons.

As for the picture posted on the previous page by Sitcomsaretheway, it seems to be one of several that were all taken at the same time--the background is the same fence covered with graffiti, he is wearing the same work shirt, and his hair is the same. (This includes the one that was offered on eBay, the autographed photo of both Freddie and Jack in which Freddie looks like he is laughing.) It struck me not too long ago that the teeth in those photos look even larger and more perfect than his were from the beginning of the second season, and I wonder if maybe they were test shots while he was wearing temporary caps, just to see how he would look?

I also think that the producers probably waited to get Freddie this work done on his teeth until they were sure they had a hit show going.

I have a good friend who is a speech pathologist and I have shown her my CATM tapes. She said that the gap and even the way his teeth were arranged in his beginning episodes of CATM could have affected his speech. I personally think his appearance as he got older improved. He lost his youthful expressions and developed a more manly appearance. I also realize that stress played a big factor towards the end. I don't see how Freddie could have gotten any more handsome than he was (except maybe to put on a FEW pounds here and there. He looked just PERFECT when he was all decked out in his suits but he did look a little under weight in his blue denim shirt (in my opinion). However, I'd accept him any way he wanted to look if he were here today! I did love Freddie's big toothy smiles - it just accentuated his dimples.

I agree, he looked handsome either way. I don't think anyone was stating that the was something wrong with him, it's just that his teeth looked as if they had-had some work done on them. They became even more obvious when had lost all of that weight.

...when he looked truly dreadful. The first three episodes of the third season his face and arms looked sooo thin--in the shows introducing Della his weight loss was particularly obvious because he was wearing his shirt untucked. I bet they had him do that (and wear sweatshirt jackets most of the rest of the time that season) to hide it, but it only made his legs look more like toothpicks by comparison!

Apart from that, I loooove how he looked with very long hair and a heavier mustache, plus the more prominent cheekbones!!! For that matter, in the few episodes when he had apparently just gotten his hair cut--like the one about Margaret's dress--he really took on that mature look that might have been an indication of how truly handsome (as opposed to boyishly cute) he would be today...

I noticed he wore V neck t-shirts alot. Hid that beautiful body. I also noticed that on the show after his hair would get kinda longish & hip looking he would get it cut a few weeks later. It looked to me like he got it cut every several weeks or so. When it got pretty funky looking then it looked like back to the barbers LOL! In some episodes it looked to me like it was freshly cut. I noticed in the Padre episode, it looked freshly cut. In one last episode, I think it was the Padre episode it looekd downright short to me & it got me to wondering... Did he know he was gonna end it all & decided to get a fresh hair in anticipation of his funeral etc? Made me wonder poor baby. He had such nice hair...

I agree with his longer hair and and his facial features that gave him a more sexier look.
This a long with his expression is one of my favorite Freddie pictures

I looove that picture--so much so that it is the one I chose to represent my character Angel! Though it is not typical of how Freddie looked, it is terribly handsome. It also looks like he was starting to put on a little weight--the cheekbones are not so prominent.

I agree re his hair--it was sooo shiny and soft-looking, usually perfectly groomed. But it is also true that toward the end it was beginning to look unkempt and dull--maybe because he was neglecting his appearance the more deeply he got into drugs? Or maybe the drugs themselves do that to a person's hair? That might be part of the reason that he seems to have gotten it cut quite often during that time--I can vouch for the fact that short hair is easier to take care of and can look neater, especially on a man.

As for his wearing V-neck T-shirts alot, I hated that look too--maybe it was another tactic, like the jackets, to hide how thin he was? Of course he DID wear a T-shirt under his work shirt sometimes earlier in the series (or alone, as in the pilot), so maybe there were just times when the set was colder than at other times?

You know, I keep forgetting that he was only 22.He looks older and more, how can I say this, manly in that photo(not that he hadn't been before that, but that photo is just the icing on the cake.LOL I can't think of another describing word at this time, but I tried my best).:D

When he died I had no idea he was 22 & thought he was older like 25 or 26. He always looked older to me. After becoming a fan of his in 2001, that's when I found out he was only 22 when he died. :crying:

I can't help but wonder what was behind his look that last season. He was sooo cute. No matter how his hair was or how he looked or how sick he was... He still looked HOT!!!! :)

You know besides all of his struggles I think he was very mature for his age as were a lot of people then kids are no where near as respnsible as they used to be now. When I look at high school seniors now I think gee we were so much older than they are!
times are changing and i think Freddie seemed older to everyone which is probably how some of his troubles came to be-everyone thought he could handle more than he could

Yes, he was very mature for his age. I was a teenager when CATM was on & I wasn't very mature back then LOL! I see todays kids & they seem more mature than I was. Too bad his maturity hadn't kept him away from the pills. :crying: He was such a sweet boy... :)

It seems as if he was a "big kid" who was half-boy and half-man. As I look at his pictures, sometimes I find it hard to believe that he was only 22-years-old. I'm almost 21-years-old and people constantly tell me that I look 16 or 17. :o

I remember a quote from his biography in which he basically stated that 'just because he was tall and big, people would always go to him searching for answers as if he knew everything'. :(

I know. :(

Kids of today really do seem more mature (and developed) than I was when I was younger. There must be something either in the water or in the food.

I think Freddie's height played a part in the fact that he seemed older than he actually was.

This a long with his expression is one of my favorite Freddie pictures Hue-mee when I look at his photo that you posted it makes me sad. Only because when I look at his eyes I know he was sick. That was around the time that he was losing alot of weight. It just makes me sad to see him so depressed. I may be wrong but, that's what I see when I see him in that picture.

The smile is still dazzling (and BTW at this close range you can tell his teeth were capped--but who cares? It was done perfectly!), but his eyes are no longer involved. And another thing that I think shows his decline in this picture--his hair is not as perfect as it usually was. It still looks soft and shines under the lights, but compared to how it had looked in the past, it is a mess! Sooooo sad!

I also agree with the earlier discussion that his height and the way he carried himself (combined with how the stress and the drugs aged him, and also something about the way he spoke--I am not sure what) made him appear much older. What a shame no one seemed to see that behind all that was a lonely little boy!

Yeah, although it's very obvious that his teeth were capped, his smile was gorgeous either way. :D

Do you think his hair looked that way because he was malnourished? You know, as in not getting the proper nutrients?
