Would somebody please explain to me how Missy Gold (who played Katie on Benson) did not have as long of a career as her sister Tracey Gold. I mean the show Benson was funnier than Growing Pains, why just the Governor and Benson alone were fantastic!

Missy decided that she wanted to leave acting when she became an adult. She is now a psychologist.

calm down man - i think that Missy just didn't have the same acting "bug" that Tracey had.

Yea I thought Missy was pretty good on Benson. Not every child star wants to stay in the business. The same thing happened with Nancy McKeon and her brother Phillip. Nancy continued to act and Phillip quit as soon as Alice left the air.

I'm glad to see that she is doing well after her stint on Benson. All too often we hear about these child stars either dead, on drugs or in jail.

...the life of a "juvenile actor" on ANY TV series is relatively brief. I think Missy Gold realized this, and simply decided to "leave the business" after "BENSON" ceased production in 1986. I congratulate her for doing what she's involved in now. As an adult, she's probably a bit more prettier than she was 27 years ago, when I saw her on TV LAND last night.

Yes I would have loved to see Missy guest star on growing pains also. They could have had a episode were Missy played the part of a girl that Mike falls head over heels for. The problems start when Mike starts to be teased by the other guys at school about the fact that his new girlfriend favorers Carol so much that she could pass as being his own sister. Mike then starts to think about how un-cool he looks so he decides to brake off the relationship but the girl played by Missy dumps him first telling him it's because he's a big stupid jerk. Mike be-side him self runs out in the street and gets hit by a truck. Okay Okay I would never make it as a sitcom writer but I thought we all could use a good laugh. But to answer the question posted in Tracey's book, Room to Grow-an appetite for life she stated that Missy liked acting but she always knew she wasn't going to stick with it forever.Since she was little she wanted to be a doctor.

It could have been around that time that she was deciding she didn't want to do this for a living.

By the way, I have made the observation that she and Benson had a very close, almost father-daughter relationship on the show which really seemed to change as she got older. They almost treated each other like regular staff members when she became a teenager. I understand she got older and a lot of the "cutesy" stuff would have to go away, but pay attention to their relationship with each other in the later seasons; it just seems so different.

:yeahthat I have also met two former child stars, Brenda & Wendi Turnbaugh (the baby Grace Ingalls twins of Little House on the Prairie). LHOP was their only acting job and they left the business after that. They didn't want to have a show business career and wanted to grow up as regular kids. That's probably what Missy felt. I am happy she is successful in her chosen profession.

And I read a quote from Inga Swenson about this: "She was too smart to be an actress." :)

That quote was in People Magazine in the summer of 2000 - they did a gigantic spread about many sitcom stars of the 1980s. I saved that article and still have it today!!

Missy Gold of TV's "Benson" SPEAKS Her Silence.... (https://pagesix.com/2022/09/03/why-child-star-missy-gold-quit-hollywood-became-psychologist/)

Missy Gold has no regrets about leaving Hollywood to become a shrink.

The former child star — who is best known for portraying the governor’s daughter, Katie Gatling, in the sitcom “Benson,” which ran from 1979 to 1986 — tells Page Six exclusively that she “always knew” she would not be on TV forever.

“I didn’t go into acting as a child for some great love [of it],” explains Gold, whose sister Tracey Gold played Carol Seaver in “Growing Pains.”

Missy eventually attended Georgetown University before earning a PhD from the California School of Professional Psychology. She is now a practicing psychologist.

The mom of two says she feels “very fortunate” to have been a child star and emerged unscathed unlike so many, including her sister.

Tracey, now 53, battled anorexia while filming “Growing Pains.” At one point, her weight dropped down to an estimated 80 pounds, and she was suspended from the show due to her skeletal appearance. After several years, she recovered and co-wrote a book, “Room to Grow: An Appetite for Life with Julie McCarron,” about her struggle and eventual recovery from the eating disorder.
