You pay for what you are and drank, not for anyone else or vice versa. Splitting the bill evenly can lead to resentment and annoyance, for example, if you ate a hamburger, fries, and coke, and your dining companion ate a lobster, steak, and had champagne, you'd be resentful helping pay for your dining companion's much higher food. But if the dining companion pays for their own champagne, lobster and steak, and you paid for your hamburger, fries, and Coke, both of you are happy.

However the waiter will hate you for making them do more work "splitting" your check.

Second, can we say "hamburger". Burger sounds stupid and sounds too much like "booger".

Bringing two separate checks isn't a big deal, but it can be annoying to a Waiter/Waitress if it's a party of like 20 People. But for Customers, each person paying for their own food and drinks is the way to go. :)

I changed the word burger to hamburger. ;)

My friends and I don't ask for separate checks and just round off what we owe with any extra money going towards the tip.

I don't think you need separate checks. If someone your with regularly orders expensive food or drinks and expects to split the check 50-50 they are taking advantage of you. If I order a bottle of wine and no one else is partaking, I make sure I pay that much more than other(s). But if my entree is $25 and someone else's is $30 or the other way around, I ignore it. I see groups of women haggling over checks but men just say split it.

Separate checks ensures that each person only pays for what they ate/drank. :)

I've done the separte check request and I know it can be a Pain in the "A" for the servers, now mostly we just round it off and when one of us 3 feel really generous we buy for the 3 of us, not when the bill is really large, it isn't most of the time anyway, but it's nice to treat a friend.

It feels good "to give".
