...

I'm a "junior", but considering my dad died when I was 7, never really felt any priority to make any distinction.....FOR DECADES on end.

Then, starting about 2003, all the official sources ( BMV, Banks, Utility companies, Library) STARTED INSISTING upon attaching A "II" suffix to my renewals. So thereafter I was "John Smith II"

Always wondered if that was a fallout from the 9/11 ordeal?

But I mean it was funny, I'd go in to like renew my library card, and they'd be acting like they caught me forging a check or something. :D

Sincerely, I think you might be underestimating the evil use that "innocent" information can be put to?

We have been "threatened" before, by Dude, schooling us that we are unaware of what he is capable of, "when provoked".
I believe it would be very unwise to take any such warning for granted. You just never know when someone is gonna reach their last straw. Usually whenever he posts a link to any remote site, i'm reluctant to follow it, for fear of not knowing if he is on a mission

A patient person with an agenda can assemble a surprising amount of information just logging the things we volunteer.....so my position is "why make it easy for them?"

A real world name is just too off the charts in terms of enabling.

That's my philosophy too. If I'm given the option to reveal personal information, I almost always decline.

I know the chance of doxxing or identity theft from a site like this is minuscule, but the paranoid in me wants to keep that buffer to the max.

GentlemanJim

The surprising thing is the degree to which some people will become malicious over just a difference in ideology. I'm not saying there is anyone like that here, but I have run into it on the web before, and it can be frightening. As in "you really want to ruin me, because I don't share your cup of tea?"

And there are a surprising number of folks out there, who do think that way.

Conversely, about 10 years ago I ran up against a web bully at a public forum similar to this, who was upset that I wouldn't allow him to set the ground rules for my participation at this board. After numerous petty incidents, he vowed to "run me off" if it was the last thing he ever did. Sounded serious to me.

So, all I knew of him was his screen name, the town he lived in (pop approx 400K) The baseball team he preferred, the industry that he worked in, and that he had recently been married.

Using his screen name I determined that he participated at other boards, including a blog, and had friends sufficiently close at these other sites, that he was on a first name basis with.

So, through the newspaper at the town he claimed to live in, I researched weddings at the approximate date he gave for being married, cross referenced by the first name he allowed people to call him.....and got a possible last name, and name of spouse.

I plugged those names into the on-line voter registration database for his county, and got a match on the name. the street address of his house, including suburb....and the names of the two daughters who reside at the same address...ostensibly from the wife's previous marriage. . It was actually jaw dropping how easy it all was.

Bare in mind, I'm a nice guy...I don't like feeling pushed around, but I generally mean no harm towards anyone.

But, the next time the bully started shoving me around.....I had a treat ready for him.

And, I suspect his jaw might have dropped a little too. Never bothered me again.

But, that's why I always see red flags whenever people "challenge" me to furnish personal data, or ask what browser and version I use to access the web. Stuff that in the wrong hands could be dangerous

Caroline13
12-24-2022, 09:50 PM
Oh Jim if we all went into all the stories in our lives, good lord....I do my best to keep things short and to the point and pretty simplistic. And yes we know you are a nice guy. We've been advised of that many times. Do you know what, I'm a nice gal. Maybe I need to add that to my signature area.

GentlemanJim
12-24-2022, 09:50 PM
And, just for a victory lap, I ran the wife's name through the search terms of the newspaper's obituaries, and learned she had been widowed 16 months earlier, the names of several of the deceased's relatives, and the widow's maiden name.

And, as everybody knows, a "mothers maiden name" is the gold standard for everything that goes "bump" in the night...:(

So, you really gotta be careful what info you let out...just a sliver can be a problem

Caroline13
12-24-2022, 10:06 PM
Oh Jim, if that is really your name, which last I knew was short for James. But maybe that's not even your real first given name.

I'm as cautious as the next person with ID theft type stuff. I shred name/address and anything with account numbers and recycle the remainder. But there are 333 million people in this country.

I don't think revealing my first name is something that could be a problem. But that's just me. If GJ or PA disagrees and they do not want to, I don't see a reason for a poster to push another poster to do it.

During my 19-1/2 years on here I've run into my share of scams on the phone and internet (I even fell for an email which posed as a survey for Home Depot), but I've never run into a problem on Sitcoms.

Going the other way, I found the arbitrary (in many instances) nature of surnames to be fascinating. Somehow I had gotten the notion that surnames were a product of ironclad family tradition passed down since the era of cave dwellers....so I was somewhat surprised to learn that those "traditions" are in many cases only a couple centuries old.

The part about "ornamental" surnames was something I always wondered about in the back of my mind, tradition notwithstanding

I'm on record here admitting that "jim" is not my name.

I wanted to put "Sentimental Gentleman" under my username, but since my real name is Jim I thought it would cause confusion. So I'm using "Sentimental Fool." (If I were a woman, no doubt Bob Welch's "Sentimental Lady" would be in order.)

"Jim" is quite common in Greek-American families like mine, but it's fallen from favor in recent decades. For example, friends of mine use "Dimitri" and "Taki" for their sons, even though their Greek name is the same as mine.

Taki derives from Demetraki, which is a nickname for Demetrios (hard for me to translate the i and e sounds from the Greek correctly).

If you go back a century or more, "Jim" I believe was an Americanization of Dimitri. (So then from Jim, my legal name is James.) Similarly, "Gus" or "Gust" commonly came from Costa/Kosta -- sounding somewhat alike.

Some Greek women named Demetria go by Toula/Tula, which derives from the nickname Demitroula. Demi Moore is believed to be a Demetria. My godmother was Areti, nicknamed Aretoula, and shortened to Toula.

Lots of times, it's a 2-step process: Kyriaki is commonly nicknamed Kyriakitsa, which is shortened to just Kitsa.

Actually neither. When I first came here I wanted to use the name Little Ricky because that was a running joke with some friends of mine. For most of my life I've done imitations of people's voices including celebrities and one I used to crack everyone up with was Desi Arnaz saying, "Look at Little Ricky" with his accent. But the name Little Ricky was taken and I didn't want to use Little Ricky II or anything like that so I came up with Babalu and used it because the avatar I found was perfect for it. Well whatever, I've avoided joining FB, I've heard some doozie stories...Sounds like the folks here are not that good of friends. Do you shop online? If so whose name do you use,,,

I do not mind revealing my first name, or even what city I live in. I mean, there are probably hundreds, or even thousands of women with my name in my area.

I know one person who has his full name, his birthdate, even where he lives all over the internet. I do not think people know how easy it is to find pertinent information about you if you carelessly post/reveal too much information about yourself online.
