Eat, Fast and Live Longer

Michael Mosley examines the science behind fasting, as he sets himself the ambitious goal of living longer, staying younger and losing weight without changing his lifestyle. [more]www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01lxyzc

Very interesting programme on how fasting can help slow the ageing process.

Sometimes Fasting also can clear heavy toxins and crap out that shouldnt be there!

Everyone should fast!!

I have looked at this off and on in my life, and NO not for me. Eating Less YES. Don't have to clean the plates that are loaded with foods...

Small portions and grazing thru the day works for me.

And cleaning out the colons that don't get cleaned good.

As I grow older, I find myself eating smaller meals, but more frequently throughout the day. For example 5-6 large "snacks", instead of 3 conventional meals.

I find that if I try to eat any large meal in the conventional sense, my colon goes into automatic purge mode, with great urgency.

Which really isn't any big deal, except whenever I go out to a restaurant, I'm doubly careful to not over do it.

My days as a buffet table terror are over. ;)

I am an obese man who has had trouble with weight my adult life. In the past several years, I would somewhat "yo-yo" in size. I would lose weight to slowly get it back. My father and then my wife would get on me about it.

I had this problem about a year and a half ago which lasted about a year. When I swallowed certain foods, it would get stuck about halfway down to my stomach and just sit there, causing me pain. So much pain, I would have to excuse myself from the table and usually throw up. Sometimes the food would "go down" after a bit but it was just stuck. Drinking something made it far worse. It was a blockage and anything liquid would be stuck there too, causing even more pain.

It used to be so called "sticky" food like rice and peanut butter. I learned to really chew my food to death before swallowing it. Before my wife knew it was a problem, I would sometimes excuse myself to use the toilet to either throw up the food I ate, or by standing, hopefully the food goes down. Then I can return to my dinner, eat it and everything would be fine.

In the end, I couldnt really eat anything without the stoppage. I still tried to keep it hidden for some reason and thought "Im fat, Ill just quit eating" and "eat far less, a blessing in disguise." It wasnt. I stopped eating anything, and although fat, stopping eating for a few days caused me physical problems. I had no energy, climbing up stairs was painful and not good. I would "huff and puff" climbing three flights of stairs because of a lack of strength and not obesity (although obesity didnt help but not eating was the main problem).

I ended up going to the hospital in China. Health care there is not bad but there are a lot of people to care for. I was evaluated and was put in the hospital as an impatient for about three days. They did tests and a biopsy and gave me medication for the issue and I havent had the problem since. What it was exactly, I dont know. Hopefully it wont come back. Have not had the problem since.

I dont know about "fasting" but do not think it is that great of an idea. We need food for fuel, we must eat. Someone eating McDonalds and potato chips everyday is better than someone starving themselves. Look at the girls with anorexia. Food is wonderful and can be a drug to the obese. Unfortunately 99 percent of food which is delicious is bad for us. I dont like drinking water, I want to drink something with flavor, but water is the best and myself and other obese people are "shamed" for not drinking water.

I've always been a recreational eater, so "slim" has never been one of my attributes.

I enjoy cooking elaborate meals, eating and enjoying them, and patting myself on the back for being such a great cook. So it's been a self perpetuating "disease" for me, being obese. Yet a labor of love, too.

So anyway, I have a robust waistline. Big ol gut.....and just the past few years have been noticing shortness of breath. even when at rest, noticing that I could no longer take the deep breaths like I used to....my breathing is shallow.

And then I just didn't eat much for 2 weeks.....and noticed my lung capacity coming back. I really believe that my big ol gut was contending with my lungs for lebensraum inside my torso.

SO, periodic fasting is part of my normal routine now...seems to provide noticeable benefit...I'm sold!

When you look at the portions at restaurants and cafeterias, which I think have increased over the years, many people eat portions that are too large. Downing a footlong sub at Subway? Too much!

At pitch-ins, look at the food people load onto their plates. Again, too much!

On this topic, at restaurants, for many yrs baskets of breads and rolls were placed on the tables before the main foods were brought out and people filled up on the breadstuffs...

This seems to have ended I notice in recent yrs.

Fasting can be foolish, maybe a day now and then but for one thing the body doesn't like to be starved, it holds on to what fat it has already.

Cut back portions and choose healthier foods -- don't fill the plate so full and once it's so full people eat everything on it.....
