This is a tough one:

50's: Johnny Cash, many rockabilly guitarists as a genre. Or blues, too many to mention.

60's: Bob Dylan, Steppenwolf, Yardbirds, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, CCR, plenty of bands in the rise of psychedelic and "message"-oriented music.

70's: Black Sabbath, KISS, Rush, Yes, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, the louder the better, as well as more prog.

80's: While many NWOBHM bands such as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard appealed to me, I was attracted to Ratt, Cinderella, Poison, and others whose visual appeal was louder than their music. I was huge into thrash such as Metallica and Megadeth, but they lacked a "fun" element to their angry songs.

90's: Being from the Seattle area, grunge was inescapable. I liked it for a while until Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love showed up on the nightly news. But I embraced the edgy energy of Pantera. Until I missed the glam 80's. Dream Theater embraced the 70's prog majesty of Rush.

00's: Uhh, the 80's bands like Priest and Maiden who showed up on the Ozzfest Main Stage were a huge deal for me. Bands like Hatebreed were popular on the Second Stage, as well as DragonForce and Shadows Fall, who played the 80's style metal with such excellence. It was like the 80's never left!
