Mr. Rutherfurd said that his boys got scholarships. Are we supposed to think this is a different family than the one we see later on with Lumpy? Where did the older boys go if this is the same family?

I think it's supposed to be the same family (even though they changed Mrs. Rutherford's first name from Geraldine to Gwendolyn). Possible reasons:

1. Honoring Helen Parrish, who died in 1959 and appeared once as the original Geraldine in a 1958 episode

2. Sloppy writing and continuity

I guess these unseen boys are still in college in the later episodes and eventually go on to their own lives, unmentioned again.
