NEW YORK — Christine McVie, the British-born Fleetwood Mac vocalist, songwriter and keyboard player whose cool, soulful contralto helped define such classics as "You Make Loving Fun," "Everywhere" and "Don't Stop," died Wednesday at age 79.

Her death was announced on the band's social media accounts. No cause of death or other details were immediately provided, but a family statement said she "passed away peacefully at hospital this morning" with family around her after a "short illness."

"She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure," the band's statement reads in part.

McVie was a steady presence and personality in a band known for its frequent lineup changes and volatile personalities — notably fellow singer-songwriters Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

During its peak commercial years, from 1975-80, the band sold tens of millions of records and was an ongoing source of fascination for fans as it transformed personal battles into melodic, compelling songs. McVie herself had been married to bassist John McVie, and their breakup — along with the split of Nicks and Buckingham — was famously documented on the 1977 release "Rumours," among the bestselling albums of all time.

Fleetwood Mac, co-founded by drummer Mick Fleetwood in 1967, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. The group's many other hit singles included "Dreams," "Go Your Own Way" and "Little Lies."

Sad news indeed. Fleetwood Mac were at the top of their game in 1976/77 with several good tunes that were chart hits.

I tried, but you got in ahead of me. A friend actually texted the news to me about 30 minutes ago, but it was too late by the time I read it.

I was really surprised and saddened by the news. I was so glad when Christine rejoined the band for their 2014 tour, which I got to see a show on.

I was also fortunate enough to see one of her last shows with the band in Toronto three years ago.

I got to see Fleetwood Mac in 2014 in Chicago. Christine still sounded as clear as ever and the whole experience was breathtaking. She will be missed.

Christine McVie is dead? She was my second favorite member of Fleetwood Mac because I always thought her voice was unique and special and I had never heard a wonderful voice just as lovely as Christine's. I did hear that she released an album called In The Meantime and she sounded fabulous in it. I always wanted a Christine McVie solo album because I liked her voice. How many solo albums does she have?

The 2014 tour was truly an iconic show to see since it was the last time the core members of the band were on tour together.

Although Lindsey was absent from the 2019 tour, it was still an unforgettable experience being second row floor, directly in front of Christine. It's still hard to believe she's gone.

Stevie's handwritten tribute was heartbreaking to read.

I saw them at the Classic East show at Citifield in 2017, some of the last shows they were all together. Fleetwood Mac were one of the rare bands where you really needed all five. I skipped the 2019 shows because to me, no Lindsay Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac was a joke.

We've lost so many noteworthy musicians and entertainers in recent years. R.I.P. Christine.
