I'm not sure if we've done this in the past, but I've been on various social media groups (pretty sure it's The Office) where we have done voting pools to determine the best episode of specific seasons and ultimately, the best episodes of the show as voted by the group.

Any interest in doing something like that here?

I'm happy to head it up if there is sufficient interest. Could be fun.

Should we do entire episodes or our favorite segments?

I have about 10 that I'd put up there for my favorites and it would be cool to see which ones would advance! :)

I'm thinking we can do favorite segments. Might be easiest.

We don't need to separate it out by season. I'm thinking of this like the "Best of UM" collection that CM promised us, but was never actually delivered.

Sounds very cool. So maybe do nominations first to determine seeding, perhaps?

What would be the criteria?

I mean, to me, nothing screams "Unsolved Mysteries" like the Dennis Depue case.

Now, was it the best presented? The most captivating? I don't know, but whenever I think about Unsolved Mysteries and a specific case.. It's this one.

So.. Rules. What are they?

The problem with the Dennis DePue case, and there's a few segments like this, is that there's no unsolved mystery to it. A guy snaps and kills his wife. It belongs more on America's Most Wanted then it did on Unsolved Mysteries.

You can bet that the Tim Mcclure segment will be a popular request lmao

Super interested. Like the best segment idea

Great idea - there seems to be a generally agreed canon of truly iconic segments (Angela Hammond, Tara Calico, Bonnie Wilder) it would be great to get a definitive list (perhaps permanent/sticky) at the top of the page...

An idea for seeding would be the threads with the most comments or views.

Wow! Y'all are technical up in here!

I love the idea of seeding. I'll admit that I'm not sure how to do it. Comment thread length is certainly a good idea, although I'll tell you right now that will make the Wackers and Angela Hammond our immediate front runners. :)

Don't disagree, but that was one of the main things that made the show great, IMO. Even the silly things like the Mystery Rock.. It's everything together that made it great.

You could split up each bracket into segment type (although you would have to probably combine some like Final Appeal, Treasure, Sci-Med, etc.). IMO, you can break it into 4 "divisions".

-Unexplained (ghosts, UFOs, creatures, Sci-Med, etc.)
-Missing (missing persons, wanted, lost heirs, lost loves, etc.)
-Deaths (unexplained deaths, murder, arson, etc.)
-Historical (mysterious legends, treasure, etc.)

Granted, you don't have to use my off the top of my head names for said divisions, but I can envision a March Madness like bracket with a bunch of UM segments whittled down to the final four.

Would we be ranking segments based on the level of mystery or on the production value/memorability of the segments?

OKAY, LET'S DO THIS!

Hit me with your nominations for favorite segment in each of the following categories: I have NO idea how I am going to determine seeding in this (I may have to lean on folks who know brackets better than I-- I'm looking at Cars and HotJock here)

CATEGORIES

Unexplained (ghosts, UFOs, creatures, Sci-Med, etc.)
-Missing (missing persons, wanted, lost heirs, lost loves, etc.)
-Deaths (unexplained deaths, murder, arson, etc.)
-Historical (mysterious legends, treasure, etc.)

If anyone has a different idea for how to organize it, I'm open for suggestions, but I think that's our best bet at a North South East West style bracket.

CRITERIA FOR SUBMISSION: I really have none. My intent is "favorite segments," and they can be your favorites for any reason you deem valid. It could be production value or acting or lack thereof, etc.

I look forward to seeing your suggestions!

I know there aren't many to choose from, but would love a Lost Heirs category as well. Those of us who love them, REALLY love them! :) Most of these were so great in every way, but I predict that Howard Drummond would crush this one! If you needed another category to even it out, "Wanted" would be good!

-Deaths (unexplained deaths, murder, arson, etc.)
-Historical (mysterious legends, treasure, etc.)

I actually like Cars' breakdown here.

Submit your nominations now! I'll start:

UNEXPLAINED: Resurrection Mary, Teresita Basa, Chupacabra

MISSING: Angela Hammond, Patricia Meehan, Charlotte Pollis, Judith Hymes

DEATHS: Eric Tamiyasu, Aileen Conway,

HISTORICAL: Circleville Writer

Unexplained Death - Dexter Stefonek
Missing - Kristie Krebs, Devin Williams, William Bradford Bishop
Lost Loves - Adam Hecht
Paranormal Activity/Sci-Med - Alien abduction of airmen from the grocery store in Cape Cod. (https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Robert_Matthews)

I look forward to seeing your suggestions!

I say you put 16 of each segment type into that particular bracket. IMO, seeding should be done based on the total replies or total views on a particular thread about a case. Here are my suggestions (with seedings based on total replies in threads):

Unexplained Death/Murder:
1. Terri McClure
2. Jeffrey MacDonald
3. Katherine Korzilius
4. Darlie Routier
5. Chaim Weiss
6. Eric Tamiyasu
7. Aileen Conway
8. Kurt Sova
9. Diana Robertson/Mike Riemer
10. Kurt McFall
11. Tommy Zeigler
12. Keith Warren
13. Jon Benet Ramsey
14. Matt Flores
15. Crystal Spencer
16. Dexter Stefonek

Missing/Wanted:
1. The Wackers
2. Angela Hammond
3. The Baskins
4. William Bradford Bishop
5. Dale Kerstetter
6. Wendy Camp
7. East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker
8. Tami Lynn Leppert
9. Deborah Poe
10. Anthonette Cayedito
11. Amy Bradley
12. Charlotte Pollis
13. Randall Utterbach
14. Adam Hecht
15. Keith Reinhard
16. Dottie Caylor

Lost Loves/Lost Heirs/Treasure/Mysterious Legends:
1. DB Cooper
2. Circleville Writer
3. OJ Simpson
4. Kurt Cobain
5. Son of Sam
6. Alcatraz Escape
7. Zodiac Killer/Unabomber
8. Amelia Earhart
9. Walter "Curly" Green
10. Anna Anderson/Anastasia
11. Walter Rice
12. Brushy Bill Roberts/Billy the Kid
13. John St. Helen/John Wilkes Booth
14. Jim Boumgarten
15. Huey Long Assassination
16. Victorio Peak Treasure

Paranormal/Sci-Med/Amnesia:
1. Sarah Powell
2. Arthur Paul Beal
3. Lake Wales Haunting
4. Rainboy
5. Kyra Cook
6. Frederick Valentich
7. Heidi Wyrick
8. Lucxi aka Lucy
9. Allagash Abductions
10. Bigfoot
11. Cokeville Elementary School Explosion
12. Katie the Gold Sweating Psychic
13. Cash/Landrum UFO Sighting
14. Tina Resch
15. Dorothy Allison
16. Resurrection Mary

I took some liberties with these cases and am not married to any of them and they can be replaced with ones that people think should be replaced with. This is just a suggestion. Obviously when the bracket is finished you would do #1 vs. #16, #2 vs. #15, #3 vs. #14, etc.

Where would a case like the Connecticut River Valley Killer fall under? The segment originally aired under the category of, “The Investigators” and not Unexplained Death/Murder/Wanted or any of the above.

Also, are we including cases from “Final Appeal” too? If so, which category do we put those in?

These are important questions! 😂

I'd say "murder/unexplained death" for the Connecticut River Valley Killer segment. Final Appeal would fit with whatever the person was convicted of, which was usually murder. Michael Scott Martin, for example, would fall under the "wanted/missing" category.
