well its like you hear about all these people that had 6 kids or so, and lived in one bedroom homes, 1 pair of clothes, no shoes, struggling to make money for food.

Sometimes, probably depending on the state, people will get more welfare the more kids they have.

Thats what I was going to say. Obviously if they went from rich to poor..its not their fault. But if they were already living in a box w/o kids...then thats just plain dumb!

I told you this on IM, but I'll tell you again. Not all 'poor' people have many children, although this may seem so.

Anyhow, kids are usually a persuit to happiness, and what's more than living life without that? Sure, the parents may not be able to offer most benefits that 'wealthier' families are able to give their children, however in most cases, that's what keeps them a close-knot family: depending on eachother and living on what they have, not what they want.

I'll tell you why poor people have a lot of kids...because a lot of them are STUPID!!!! It's true. I live smack dab in the middle of Applachia and I don't know what's wrong w/ some of these people. Hmmmm, possibly lack of education, money, and I bet all that inbreeding screws w/ people's heads..j/k I don't know why really poor people don't use birth control, but they don't seem to! I mean you can get it free at certain health care places. Gawd, there's a woman who walks up and down my street w/ a lot of kids and a baby she pushes in a stroller, and she beats the hell outta her kids and screams and curses at them. I'm thinking..Why do people like that breed????

Well if they were in my town, they'd say lack of entertainment. You know years ago before we had the Walmart, our town, out of all towns in Colorado, had the highest teenage birthrate in the STATE! Pretty sad, don't ya think. People complain that they have nothing better to do, which is true in most cases, but lord, you don't have to go sleep around with every guy in town. People in my town can be so over dramatic, it's not even humurous.

I've never heard of Walmart being credited for lowering the rate of teenage preganancy before. They could use that in their hokie commercials.

I was just saying, once they built that, and once the school started to teach sex ed classes, kids actually had something to do and somewhere to go, instead of saying "I'm bored, let's fool around!" That sounds like my town. My senior year, I noticed a bunch of girls pregnant. I mean all grades too from 9th to 12th.

I'm kind of half on the subject ya know? I'm sure its nobody's dream to be 15 and pregnant. That basically screws your teenage years up. A few drop out because of it. On the other hand, I'm glad they are not having abortions everytime they got pregnant.

I don't mean to be judgemental either, but I noticed a bunch of people hopping from one person to another. One week Sally could be going out with Roger, and the week after that going out with Johnny while still seeing Roger on the side.

Life Lesson for the Day: It's cool to date a guy and have sex with that one guy. Don't play a game of hopscotch and do it with 10 guys in 10 days.

My family use to be poor when I was about 10 or 11. There were 4 of us kids at the time. We did eventually become homeless because my parents didn't pay the rent. We were only homeless for the summer though. That's about the time when my parents found a home and found good jobs. So my family is poor anymore they are pretty stable.

But as for why do they have more kids. Well my step-dad doesn't beleive in having a women have her tubes tied. So they kept having kids. After the 4 of us they had 2 more. But who cares? We are not poor anymore.

I too reckon it's pretty much all to do with stupidity. The reason they are poor in the first instance is cos they're not smart enough to get a decent job so they rely on welfare. Then they get knocked-up and realise that they get more welfare the more kids they have. Of course, you'll notice that half the time these walfare mothers don't use the welfare money on their kids - they'll use it on themselves, for drugs or whatever.
I see a lot of that round my way. The village a couple of miles up the road from mine is full of council housing and the majority of the people there are all unemployed and sponging off decent hardworking tax-payers like myself. It sickens me!
I know a young girl - my age, I went to school with her - who got pregnant specifically so she could skip the council housing waiting list and get a house right away. Incidentally, she still refuses to get a job, still collects her walfare money every week and still seems to be able to afford better clothes than myself!
The really sickening part is..........I hear she's now pregnant again!

I do not have anything firm to back me up, because frankly I am too lazy to look for it on the internet, and all my sociology books and notes are packed up in boxes awaiting my impending move, but I do believe that since the Welfare Reform Act of 1996, the idea that people get more welfare when they have more kids is not entirely true.

This leads me to the whole issue of people getting their panties in a bunch over welfare, which frankly pisses me off. I can't address Mossopp's concerns directly, because I am ignorant about the state of welfare in Scotland. However, I can say with confidence that many mis-informed Americans feel the same way about welfare in America as Mossopp feels.

The thing is that you all don't even realize that middle class America gets more government subsidies (read: WELFARE) than any other segment of society. Wanna know who comes in second place? Corporations. The poor, destitute, disabled, mentally challenged, and working poor are a distant thrid.

If you don't believe me consider this: middle class America gets a tax reduction for each child they have. So basically, middle class America is getting more welfare for more children.

If you want more proof ask me in a month when I unpack.

Both Chris and Jenny made statements that lay the onus of bringing children into the world solely on the shoulders of women. ("but lord, you don't have to go sleep around with every guy in town." and "It's cool to date a guy and have sex with that one guy. Don't play a game of hopscotch and do it with 10 guys in 10 days.", respectively). Now, Chris and Jenny, you have been posting long enough and I know you well enough to know that you are not intentionally implying that men have no part in this, but your words seems to imply otherwise. I just wish well-meaning people such as yourselves would try to catch slip-ups like that.

I know many of you will think I am over-reacting, but such is life.

As for the actual topic of this post...I believe studies have shown that in fact poor people do not have more children (at least in America...if you included the whole world then perhaps it would be true). The people who perpetuate this myth are those that are mis-informed about welfare and try to use it as an argument against welfare.

The lowest my parents made in my lifetime was 40,000 per yr. My grandpa owned a buisness and my dad werked for it and got paid that. now my dad owns the buisness. we live in the same house, only its been renovated 4 or 5 times. Poor people are poor because of their own doing. My father didn't finish high school... he didnt finish the friggen 10th grade... My mother never went to college. if my grandfather did not have that buisness or it was given to someone else in the family, we'd have no money. If we were poor id know why, Lack of education. Have you ever met a poor harvard grad? And I dont know WHY they have more kids. I know 2 poor familys... Well they aint really "poor" but i live in a rich town, so normal peoplea re poor... and they have 50 kids each. Theres only me and my brother. And the REAL rich familys have no more than 2... Like that kid who';s dad sold his buisness for 84 mill... Theres only 2 of them.

Yikes. Ok, that probably came out wrong, and I should have said that you don't have to go and sleep around with every guy and girl in town. When you read it, it probably sounded bad, and I myself didn't catch it, but I'm glad you pointed it out. When I said that, I really did mean both guys and girls, cause well guys have a big part in it too. Next time I'll try to catch my error before my post. Sorry if I made it sound like I only blame girls.

I'm glad you caught my mistake too, Bootsy. After all, it does take two to tango. I shouldn't place the blame on the girls because it does take two for a person to get pregnant. The way my post sounded did sound like I was pointing my finger at all the girls because they got pregnant at a young age. Again, I'm glad you caught my error Bootsy. If you hadn't called it to my attention, I probably wouln't have went searching through old threads to find that post.

No problem Chris and Jenny. I'm glad you guys aren't mad at me or thinking I'm just being nit-picky. It's just that the way I see it, if we were talking face-to-face, I would know what you guys meant to say....additionally, since I feel I know you since you've been posting here awhile, I realize that both of you didn't mean what you implied....however, other people may not know you, and when you're on a message board, saying what you mean becomes of the utmost importance.

Not all poor people have kids or a lot of them. But I think one of the reasons why poor people (who have kids) are poor is because they can't afford the kids & support the whole family.
I have heard theories that some couples can't get enough sex and thus the woman gets pregnant and the baby is born. Then the whole reproduction cycle restarts again and again and what do you know- they have about eight or ten kids and thus become poor. I think that theory is accurate.

It's not a lot of poor people have a lot of kids, they have a lot of kids that MAKE them poor...My theory..
