In a move that was set up as far back as Roseanne season 10, The Conners season 5 is finally situating Darlene into the show's matriarchal role.

The fact that Sara has her hands on the show is clear from the s01 opening, where she gets the final screen with John Goodman (who is too important to be left out).
Since then Darlene has been the main focus, but it also almost natural, also in the original series Darlene was the most important and beloved character.

This is only speaking on the "matriarch" role. But the thing is not very well managed by the writers.
But the problem is that the show is excessevely balanced towards Darlene. One thing is being the center of the family, one the center of the show.
Roseanne was the center of the family, but the whole family was the center of the show.
In The Conners Darlene is the center of the show, she's supposed to be the center of the family but the family has no center.

I really don’t see Darlene as the center. Becky, Jackie, and Dan all have important roles
