In the episode where Edith is almost violated, she slams the burned cake into his face, pushes him out the back door then she runs out the front door..... I guess that was the only choice she had, but even that seemed dangerous to me... What kept her from meeting up with him again outside? It seems like a very short distance between the Bunkers' backdoor and front door... plus wouldn't Edith have to go around back to get to Mike and Gloria's house? It seems like she would have run right into him again. I guess being outside in the open and still being disoriented a bit from having his face burned, he would be less of a threat but still...

It was a very dramatic season 8 episode. I guess I gave too much away if you havent seen it.... but she was basically holding a hot burned cake in a pan out of the oven and used it to her advantage to get away from the attacker.

I was watching the scene again and just noticed Edith knees the guy in the crotch as she's shoving him out the door!!

It's Edith's 50th Birthday parts 1 and 2, the 4th and 5th episodes of season 8

I know I have said this before, but if I was the President of CBS, that episode would have enraged me. I would demand and have Norman Lear in my office as soon as possible. I would have told Lear that that episode was way beyond the pale. To have an episode where America's favorite grandma almost get raped? WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING? People tune into All in the Family for comedy and entertainment, not that. What would have Lear said in his defense, "Rape is an issue with discussing?' Sure in the proper context. But not on a prime time "comedy" show. To quote the future Stanley Hudson of "The Office" LEAR, HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND, BECAUSE I WILL HELP YOU FIND IT!"

After I somewhat cooled off, I would have told Lear he went too far and every script for shows would have to go through Standards and Practices. Lear wouldnt be trusted. Who would say that Lear would not have done a home invasion episode of Good Times or The Jeffersons (if these shows were on then). To think that the viewing public saw that without warning, especially with children in the room (and myself was about a 8 year old child when this was on, and my parents and I watched the show every week.), would have angered me no end. Lear threatening to go to ABC or NBC? Me as the President of CBS, I would have wished him luck. ABC and NBC were not the network CBS was. Go. Goodbye and dont let the door hit you in the behind on your way out. Seriously (and I have said this before on this message board). I would have loved to know how many people called the CBS and the CBS affiliate switchboard that night.

It was the 1970's and the show had a lot of topics not discussed at all until then. ATIF broke a lot of barriers. I loved Archie Bunker and still watch the series today online. Apparently it wasn't that big a deal because they did the same thing 2 years later on Archie's Place when one of Murray's old Mob buddies comes into the bar and shoots someone in cold blood.

All in the Family was all about tackling the real life issues of the day... It wasn't JUST comedy in the same way things like Sanford and Son was. They tackled issues like rape, breast cancer, LGBTQ issues, abortion, racism, etc.... While I hated seeing Edith attacked, I think it was perfectly in line with the premise of the show.

What was sorta unsettling though was audience laughter during some of the attack scenes.... That reminded of how on Different Strokes when the ped bike shop owner was hitting on Arnold and his friend, they played the laugh track... just kinda weird

Edith said that to Gloria but it was not in that episode. it was years before. Possibly in the below referenced episode.

There was also an episode where Gloria was attacked in the street in an attempted rape, but she supposedly fainted and the guy ran away. Charles Durning played a police detective in that episode.

The problem to me was that Norman Lear, after he had a hit show, was obsessed with inserting his liberal propaganda into the shows and ruining them. Blacks and liberals were always good; white conservatives were always stupid and bad.

I've never been an actor, but I assume it's nice to mix it up once in a while and be challenged instead of doing the same thing week after week. Thus, a lot of shows will do an episode out of left field. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.
