Class is back in session for Dan Harmon's beloved NBC comedy, whose #sixseasonsandamovie campaign finally seems to have borne fruit.

SEPTEMBER 30, 2022

Attention, students. After a prolonged campaign, Community fans will see their “six seasons and a movie” dreams come true, as NBC Universal announced that streaming service Peacock (https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/community-movie-peacock-dan-harmon-joel-mchale-1235389233/) has ordered a Community feature film.

Peacock (https://www.kmaland.com/news/entertainment/community-movie-is-a-go-at-peacock/article_701777f8-fab1-5306-af26-2913d1afe26d.html) won the rights to the Community movie from original series creator Dan Harmon in a “highly competitive situation,” according to a press release, and will also stream the series non-exclusively. Harmon will write and executive produce the Community movie with Andrew Guest, who wrote on the show’s first two seasons and penned classic episodes like “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons” and “A Fistful of Paintballs.” Community star Joel McHale will also serve as an executive producer on the film with Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster. Sony Pictures Television and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, will serve as the studio.

The series followed a study group's misadventures and exploits at a community college in Colorado. The film will reunite McHale's Jeff Winger with some of the members of said study group: Abed (Danny Pudi), Annie (Alison Brie), Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Ben (Ken Jeong), and Dean Pelton (Jim Rash). As of now, it's unclear whether longtime series regulars Donald Glover, who played Troy and left during the series' fifth season, Yvette-Nicole Brown, who played Shirley and left at the end of the fifth season, or Chevy Chase, who played Pierce and left during the fourth season and was killed off during the fifth season, will return for the film. While Glover and Brown were not mentioned in the film's official release, McHale tagged them both in a tweet announcing the project. Brown then positively quote tweeted McHale, writing “It's happening! Congrats, #Community fans! You guys did this!”

The campaign for Community movie began back in 2014 near the end of the beloved comedy's run on NBC, with the hashtag #sixseasonsandamovie. Premiering in 2009, Community was a part of NBC's must see comedy lineup airing alongside The Office, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation. In 2012, it won an Emmy for outstanding individual achievement in animation – comedy series. In 2020, the full Community cast reunited for a virtual table read to raise money for coronavirus relief efforts.

“‘Six seasons and a movie’ started out as a cheeky line from Community’s early seasons and quickly ignited a passionate fan movement for this iconic, hilarious and cool NBC comedy,” said Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We’re incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie and can’t wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy for Peacock audiences.”

Dan Harmon expects Donald Glover to appear in the Community movie, but what about Yvette Nicole Brown? (https://www.slashfilm.com/1044374/dan-harmon-believes-donald-glover-will-come-back-for-the-community-movie/)

When the news was announced earlier this week that the cult-favorite community college comedy "Community" would finally be getting a movie, fans were both thrilled and a bit nervous, because two very important faces were missing from the cast. Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Christian supermom Shirley, and Donald Glover, who plays dim-witted but big-hearted former footballer Troy, were absent from the cast list. While Troy left the series early in season 5 so Glover could focus on his growing musical career (as Childish Gambino), and Brown left after season 5 to care for her ailing father, it's hard to imagine a "Community" movie without them.

In an interview with Variety (https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/community-movie-dan-harmon-donald-glover-peacock-1235396414/), "Community" creator Dan Harmon explained that the announcement is only the cast that's officially attached so far, and that we Human Beings shouldn't fret too much, because there are things happening behind the scenes that should bring two of our favorite fictional classmates back for the film.

Troy and Shirley in a mo-vie!

Despite the announcement not including Brown or Glover's names in the cast list, Harmon said that he's pretty sure it's all a matter of figuring out the paperwork and scheduling:

"I think that Donald is coming, based on word of mouth, but it's just the deal isn't official or wasn't official. It would be difficult to really commit to doing this thing without Donald. So I believe he is coming back. I think if there's names missing from a list, it's because the names that are on the list, their deals are agreed upon enough that it's OK to say they are on the list, and anybody that's not on a list, it's just not the case yet. So there is nothing official about anybody being out."

Both Brown and Glover appeared in the "Community" table-read for charity in 2020 and seemed to have a ball, plus both have mentioned previously that they would be open to the idea of a movie. Just days before the movie's announcement, Brown told E! News that she knew things were being discussed and there was definitely going to be a movie and she wanted to be involved. The "Community" cast feel kind of like a dysfunctional family, and it's not really a reunion if everyone doesn't show up. (Thank goodness Pierce, played by the curmudgeonly Chevy Chase, is dead and can't come back unless he's playing a ghost or a holorgram.)

The "Community" movie is still a ways out and has only just been announced, so no one should jump to any conclusions just yet. As long as I get to hear Danny Pudi and Glover sing "Troy and Abed in the mooorr-ning!" one more time in my life, I'll be a happy human being.

Dan Harmon rules out Community movie paintball battles, citing the rise in school shootings (https://sports.yahoo.com/community-dan-harmon-rules-paintball-201023465.html#:~:text=He%20noted%20that%20the%20increase,back%20then%2C%E2%80%9D%20he%20said.)

He noted (https://variety.com/2022/film/news/community-movie-paintball-dungeons-dragons-dan-harmon-1235466341/) that the increase in school shootings would make a return to the paintball sequences or Dungeons & Dragons unacceptable (https://www.cbr.com/community-movie-no-paintball-dnd-dan-harmon/). “You're running around with guns in a school, which was never a good idea on TV even back then,” he said.
