In the Return to Mayberry movie, Barney acts like Andy becoming a postal inspector is an upgrade from sheriff. That never made any sense to me.

He moved out of town midway thru the first season of Mayberry RFD. Probably to Raleigh.

He returned to Mayberry for one episode in the second season, with his and Helen's new baby. Aneta Corsaut was in that episode, but no Ron Howard.

Minor correction but in the episode Andy's Baby (The season Premier of RFD and Andy's final appearance as Sheriff Taylor until return to mayberry) Andy mentions moving to Charlotte and explains that Opie is still at Charlotte due to High School Exams.

One thing I've often wondered about is if Andy ever intended to make Seasons 7 and 8 along with the entirety of RFD not cannon to Seasons 1-6. in the movie he mentions it's been twenty years since he had been back instead of the seventeen. That combined with choosing not to bring back living characters like Arlene Golonka, Jack Burns and Buddy Foster (From what i heard Andy violently slammed a door in Buddy's face and swore at
him when asked if he could come back for the movie as Mike Jones), not protesting when Ken Berry couldn't commit due to Mama's family, not mentioning Andy Junior, having Howard be the only character from the last three seasons in the movie and using writers who wrote the good episodes for the movie (Everette Greenbaum and Harvey bullock) it makes one wonder if Andy wanted the show to be first five + six seasons episodes without warren.

The reunion film went to the most obvious location for structure and that was the first five seasons. Those seasons were the golden era, it's why the show is held in reverence to this day. At the heart of those years was the friendship of Andy and Barney and their vocation in life "lawman's work", and of course Andy's relationship with Opie. Jack Burns Warren character would have been as out of place as Elinor Donahue's Ellie Walker character would have been in the reunion film. There were too many other things too cover to deal with the characters that went on to Mayberry RFD as well as a character who was never a part of either series (Andy Jr).

Andy has a complicated relationship with the final three seasons, when the Warren character failed to work out (that's another discussion entirely) the show became more a slice of life series with laughs in short supply. I don't think Andy wanted to be thought of as a comedic actor so his character became the strangest lead character in sitcom history. That said he was well compensated and continued to make money from the RFD series. Where I think he and his business partners made a mistake was in failing to realize the need to allow Mayberry RFD to become its own series instead of an extension of TAGS final three seasons. Ken Berry was underutilized and the series may have survived the purge of 71 if the series had been allowed to evolve a bit.
