This is the list, in my opinion a mostly idiotic list, but this is from the writers of Rolling Stone, a vapid magazine written mostly by who knows what. If I have not seen it, I will state this. I will say I have not seen a lot of TV the last twenty years for various reasons (living abroad, not have access to programming in the 00's except for DVD's), or just having no interest in watching it. This list is mostly awful. American television began in 1946-1947. On this list there is only one 1950's show, I Love Lucy and does not have many of the other great groundbreaking (a term I use often here) series from the Golden Age of Television. Many great and popular shows are not even on this list. The Andy Griffith Show for example which is still seen 62 years later all over America on cable. The Dick Van Dyke Show also is not on this list. The Carol Burnett Show is not on this list. Neither is Ed Sullivan, another ground breaking show which launched the career of so many musical bands, comics and entertainers. Neither is Gunsmoke, an adult and thoughtful western on from 1955 to 1975. Gunsmoke started when I Love Lucy was on the network and was cancelled when it shared the list with Mary Tyler Moore, MASH and Maude. Also, neither is my probably favorite show of all time, Sanford and Son, the first modern show (fifty years ago) with an African American cast which was so popular it helped spawn other very popular mainly African American cast shows such as The Jeffersons and Good Times (not on the list and Good Times deserved to be.) Roseanne is not on here. Neither is The Cosby Show (although this might be understandable because of the revalations of Cosby's life). Or Family Ties for that matter. A lot of forgettable junk on this list for some reason.

I do have a bias against HBO. I hate HBO. Except for The Sopranos, which I am somewhat critical of, have never liked any HBO programming. The people at HBO thought back in the 1980's that they have no restraint against gratitous swearing and nudity that this is what they will show because they can and the networks cannot. I am not against nudity and swearing if it is done well in a production, but most of HBO is garbage and refuse to watch HBO except the Sopranos. This is a bias and my complaints below are known. Maybe I am snarky making fun of the shows I didnt like. But there are about 10 percent of these shows that no one watched but are forgettable. Maybe some angst. Comments welcome!

But here is the list and my bias opinions.....



1. The Sopranos. I liked the Sopranos. Unlike all the other garbage HBO has ever put out. Maybe the violence, constant swearing, gratitious nudity worked here. It doesnt take away my opinion of HBO, but the characters were so bad, evil and not redeemable. I have seen every episode and yes, when I am bored on Youtube will pull up scenes from that program (and literally every scene is on YouTube). The acting is well done and even mobsters have stated it is very close to real. A mobster once went to James Gandolfini and told him that "a Don doesnt wear shorts," which got into the show. One complaint I had about The Sopranos was there was too many characters and a lot of them I could not care less about. Tony's children. Could have him just not have children and his cheating because his wife could not bear him children. A lot of the murders the guys did and the police/FBI could never solve them (example, Paulie and Chrissy killing the waiter right outside the restaurant after a bunch of them having dinner there. It seems the cops would have discovered the dead body, and discovered the last people the waiter served and went from there. Or Tony pulling a gun out the mouth of a huge fish and killing an adversary on a boat dock in the middle of the day, Mafia Bosses dont kill people directly). I wouldnt have the pychiartrist angle at all and just watched the boys screw over and kill their enemies. But I would be a minority opinion on this, to me the show would have been about the mob and their victims and not all the side characters it didnt need.

2. The Simpsons. This was the Number 2 show of all time by Rolling Stone in 75 years of television broadcasting? Seriously? I was in college in 1987 when this program began and was a fan and watched about ten years of it. Why did I stop? Maybe I matured, and maybe the series just shows the same stuff and the same characters in different things over and over again. I havent seen an episode since Clinton was President so dont know if it is good or not. In the late 1980's it was a cultural phenomenon. The Simpsons would be interesting to me if the kids were allowed to grow up. Having Bart still 8 years old in 2022 is ludacrous. Bart at 43 with his own family and maybe a grandfather and Lisa as an adult living her own life in a career with a love life and maybe children of her own and the "baby" a talking 37 year adult with her life and Homer and Marge in their 70's or 80's would have made the show fresh and interesting. Did not have to age them year by year. But not aging them at all is stupid. Bart is an 8 year old in 1987 and he is an 8 year old in 2022. Seriously? Now I think it is a relatively inexpensive show for FOX to put on Sundays which still grabs enough ratings.

3. Breaking Bad. Saw the whole series and it was wonderfully made from beginning to end. This show was much, much better than The Sopranos. I looked forward every week to watching it and it was quality from beginning to end. One thing I appreciated, very little nudity and very little swearing. A lot of action and drama.But still have to ask, is it the third best TV show of American Television since 1946? I will say it was the best drama show this century since 2000. A worthy successor to The Sopranos.

4. The Wire. Never seen it, but it has a lot of fans. I guess a lot of fans want to watch black men sell crack and not call it racist.

5. Fleabag. Never seen it but it is a BBC show distributed by Amazon, one of the most awful corporations in the history of Mankind. Amazon is a disgusting, labor intensive and labor killing industry full of low waged, tired, poor, employees making another dollar for a bald headed troll with a HUNDRED AND EIGHTY BILLION Dollars. The wealth of about 500 Tom Hanks (literally please look it up, I did)and this bastard wants more. I hate him and what he has done to modern society. Hasnt Jeff Bezos made enough money off of you people who are too lazy to do your own shopping and supporting your own economy? Seriously? The same man who fires hard working employees after three years for being "complacant"? And the best Jeff had to give the serfs is some garbage called "Fleabag" (and this is what he thinks of you, remember this when you buy more crap from his website). Bezos thinks his employees and customers as fleabags. Dont forget this although most of you wont because of the sexual thrill of having boxes with erect penis logos of crap delivered to you on your porch. British drama? The 5th best show since 1946?

6. Seinfeld. I guess I can agree with this somewhat. It was an original show and the writing of the program was supurb. I have always been a very casual fan of Seinfeld, but many parts of the show is absolutely hilarious. It was an original idea. A show about nothing and Jerry had 75 girlfriends. Jason Alexander (not his real name) was the star and the show was centered on him. Jerry was merely a straight man. Jerry must have thought he won the Powerbal Lottery that such an unknown player fell into this. He was an unknown and unfunny, untalented comic. He somehow by the Grace of God gets this show and makes a Billion Dollars. He was the fourth funniest person on the program. Must be nice to be him. Jerry was never that funny, he was "funny" because of the writers and the show was named after him. Jerry Seinfeld was a super lottery winner and nothing more. Jason Alexander was a hundred times funnier, and although Jason is wealthy, still does other shows while the not so funny Seinfeld collects cars and mansions and full of himself. Jerry was the "straight man" of the other three players. They were the funny ones not him. What jokes did Jerry Seinfeld have? Him: "Remember when your mother made soup which tasted like butt and you didnt want it but ate it anyway? Me too!" That is the extent of Jerry Seinfeld's humor and he's a billionaire. You can look at this clown and see that life is not fair. At all.

7. Mad Men. To me an interesting show. I love history and one thing I really liked was that the people who did the props for the show did an excellent job. For me, I was a casual fan of the show and maybe a complaint was that there was a LOT of characters with stories, especially the early years. Draper to me was a sad individual. He was successful and wealthy but wasnt happy and because of his misery lost two marriages, and I wanted to kick his ass the way he treated the second wife. For me the central character was Peggy, not Don. She was interesting and the show should have been about her. To me, Don a depressed dumbass.Not a bad man except he cheated on his first wife (and think his second) which is unforgivable. I get as a hetrosexual male that Don was a beautiful looking man. The actor has done other stuff but really thought John Hamm would have been an A List actor. But Don to me was more dumb than evil (he wasnt evil, just a drunk) I hated the way he treated his second wife. She was gorgeous, French, loved sex. loved to cook and wanted her own career and not be dependant on Don supporting her. The perfect wife!! And yes, I want to get falling down ass drunk with Roger! The hangover would have been worth it.

8. Cheers. For me, probably the best sitcom of the 1980's. Really, Thursday Night on NBC was "Must See TV" for the most part. Cosby (before he knew he was a rapist pervert), Cheers, Night Court and the greatest cop show of all time "Hill Street Blues" (mentioned later woefullu way down this list.). Launched the careers of Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson. A very well written, funny program. Thanks to NBC for not cancelling it the first year when it had low ratings. NBC replaced the idiots in programming in the 1970's with smart, capable, forward thinking people.

9. Atlanta. Never seen it. 75 years of TV and this is the ninth best show? A show about African Americans while Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons and Good Times are not even on the damn list?!

10. Mary Tyler Moore Show. Probably the best sitcom of the 1970's and that is saying a lot. Probably some would argue for All in the Family. This program had so many good, interesting and funny characters. A show I watched as a child (and liked then) and even now will watch it on Youtube (whole episodes there). Mary and Grant Tinker made so much money off this show that they started MTM Enterprises which had a host of fantastic programming in the 1980's. If it was possible to make all the players alive and as young now, this show would have easily worked in the 21st Century, except the office would have computers and smart phones.

11. Succession. Never seen it. Had a lot of good reviews. Maybe I should try it. Brian Cox is an excellent actor (see the film Running with Scissors).

12. The Twilight Zone. Probably the best written and most original TV show of all time. Twilight Zone had everything going for it. Science Fiction, exploration of humanity and psyche, mostly very interesting stories which usually told a moral tale or just scared the hell out of us in the end. Many episodes are still famous and resonate with us today. Rod Sterling probably had somewhat of a hard time with the CBS brass because his show was so imaginative and inventive and did not follow a formula. Also, the newest Twilight Zone series that was on about 2018-2020 was excellent and cancelled. Boo on that!

13. VEEP. Never seen it. Had good reviews but to me it was Elaine Benes as a Vice President? This was on a few seasons because of Seinfeld. Or something.

14. The Americans. Never seen it or even heard of it. No one else has either and this is the 14th best show on television the past 75 years?

15. The Larry Sanders Show. Never seen it although the critics love it. Seems that it was Garry Shandling channeling David Letterman (my opinions on him below) or something. It was an HBO show and I generally disliked HBO shows especially of that era, bias on me.

16. Twin Peaks. Never saw it but critics love it. It was a cult show and some people liked it, to me it seemed to weird to follow or care about. Also a CBS show Picket Fences which was a similar theme.

17. The Leftovers. Never seen it, a three season HBO show about "grief, depression, and the search of meaning in a meaningless World." OK. Probably with a lot of swearing and naked folks. HBO. I could talk about is this really the 17th best show in the history of television?

18. Saturday Night Live. This should be ranked in the Top 10 although many online critics complain that the program has not been remotely funny since the 1990's or even the 1970's. It cannot be argued that this program has launched the careers of so many talents on TV and film and it really was groundbreaking in its time. I will sometimes watch some of the skits of the new shows today, but again, online there are louder calls for SNL to close up shop. But its Saturday Night at 10:30/11:30 PM, and NBC still makes a lot of money from the series. This show should last until nuclear anniliation or Jesus comes back.

19. I may Destroy You. Never seen it, have no mind to either. Anyone see it? Change my mind.

20. 30 Rock. I have never seen this show. Critics and fans love it. Maybe because of Alec Baldwin. Baldwin has always come across to me as an arrogant, smug a-hole. There is an audio of Baldwin and how he talked to his teenage daughter. Horrible and proves my judgement about him. I liked Baldwin in the film Glengarry Glen Ross, he was mean and brutal in that, the casting director made a right choice with him. But comedy? Pass. Tina Fey is a beautiful woman, smart and funny, and she did Sarah Palin better than Sarah Palin. Too bad she wasnt the one playing Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation instead of Amy Phoeler.

21 All in the Family. This groundbreaking series only made it to 21? Seriously? What Meathead wrote this. ATIF changed the face of television and still stands as one of the funniest, poignant, thought provoking shows of all time. Confronted racism, sexism, liberalism? This was the original "woke" show.

Watched it as a child and in my 50's STILL watch it on Youtube on my Iphone. This was one of the greatest shows ever and it only made it to 21? Really Rolling Stone?

22. Star Trek. This was a good choice, a show that has spawned about 12 movies and what, 8-10 different spinoff shows? The best Star Trek series is Deep Space Nine however. A science fiction show loved by both children and adults. A series obviously ahead of it's time (since the succesor series was on in the 1990's)

23. Watchmen. Never seen it. It was HBO, so it a bunch of nudity, swear words and violence with some kind of story.

24. Freaks and Geeks. Lasted a year on NBC (1999-2000). Never seen it. I graduated high school 15 years before.

25. MASH. This show is on 25th instead of being in the Top 10? Seriously? Not to mention that this was a groundbreaking, mostly liberal program that broke barriers about the horror and pain of war. Seriously Rolling Stone, this is behind Freaks and Geeks and HBO garbage many have not seen? MASH is still shown daily on cable in the United States 40 years afterward. It was timeless although as a critic, it lasted way too long and Alan Alda decided to run it and direct it with mixed results.

26. Sesame Street. I watched Sesame Street as a child in the early 1970's. SS started in 1969 so the first children it entertained and educated are nearly 60 years old now. I dont know about the series now since I dont have children or grandchildren. Has liberalism and wokeism caught up with the show? Is Oscar the Grouch still funny as (bleep)? The actor who played Bob was on the show from 1969 to 2018, about 50 years. I learned how to count to ten in Spanish from SS and I was from a non Hispanic area (now changed). Mister Rodgers didnt make this idiotic list however and should have been since Fred Rodgers dedicated his life to moral, kind, child television.

27. Deadwood. Never seen it. Was only on two years. I have already mentioned my distain for almost anything HBO except Sopranos and John Oliver and leave it at that. Horses, hookers, constant swearing, naked butts. And again, neither Gunsmoke or Bonanza made the list. Especially Gunsmoke.

28. Friday Night Lights. I think I saw the first episode or two. I saw the movie which had a poor black kid who was a superstar offensive player with all kinds of scholarship offers to the best schools to get his leg tore up in a game which ruined his career and life. That was heartbreaking. I want to say this was based and the film was based on a true story. But even if the kid never got hurt, he just would have been used by a major program, be put in minimal easy classes and played hard and the kid's only hope would have been the NFL which takes about 1-2 percent of college players. A major college "Saturday Night Lights" would have been more interesting, and no, Blue Mountain State sucked.

29. Roots. Roots was groundbreaking and because of this series a lot of people became interesting in genelogy, but unfortuantley the show was in the 1970's. long before the internet and technology which would make looking up ancestors as easy as it is now. Plus it really showed the hardship that blacks had from coming over on the ship to being enslaved at the whim of a "Master". As a negative had OJ Simpson in it. However for me looking at clips of Roots on Youtube, it was fairly contrived and honeslty not that well made due to budget constraints. But still groundbreaking in scope and thought provoking. Too bad it was not on 40 years later when people could look up their ancestors, but this was probably harder for black people.

30. Parks and Recreation. I was a big fan of this program when it was first on. From this I became a big fan of Nick Offerman, and anything he is in. It was an interesting an original concept, and the people on the show was allowed to curse occasionally with it bleeped out. Had a lot of interesting characters and launched a few careers. Hpwever not a big fan of Amy Poehler although Pohler was pretty decent in this and the show let all the players shine and again, had a workplace concept of local government which has never been portrayed before.

31. Game of Thrones. I have never seen it. Not a big fan of the genre. I love history and would love to watch a series about a European Kingdom in the early Middle Ages. I huge fan of the 1970's BBC "I Claudius", and supposedly GOT got some inspiration from Claudius (maybe). But you can keep the fictionalized dragons and orcs show. Maybe Thrones did not have this. I dont know. Games was critically aclaimed and millions loved it and there is now a spinoff so it must have been quality, it just not for me (or Lord of the Rings).

32. Better Call Saul. I said earlier that I loved Breaking Bad and was looking forward to this show, but watched a season and gave up on it. I have seen clips of later seasons and it seems to me a lot like Breaking Bad without Walt and Jesse. One interesting dynamic is Saul trying to stay hidden when someone (a taxi driver from New Mexico) recognized him and Saul trying to figure out what to do, but I dont follow the show so I dont know.

33. Monty Python Flying Circus. A BBC show. Monty Python to me is somewhat entertaining, some of the skits to me are hit and miss. Big fan of John Cleese and liked Fawlty Towers. Michael Palin is also comedic. The Dead Parrot Sketch. The movies were better, especilly the Holy Grail film. In my American high school in the early 1980's, a lot of stoner nerd kids liked the show. Maybe to me at the time, it was too English. Maybe for me it was because I was a youth and American and we couldnt get the humor. Just because we speak the same language doesnt mean we have the same culture and identity.

34. The Office. A great American sitcom and watched the show from beginning to end with a lot of interesting and funny characters. Unlike a lot of work comedies, the people here did not necessarily like one another and would even plot against each other at times. There was also some comings and goings of employees which is true to life, and the usual horrible corporate crap the employees had to endure. Michael Scott was dumb and needy, he thought these disfunctional people as family when mostly these people wanted to do their time and go home. I had a female boss for about a year who was a bit like Scott. She wasnt a bad lady but she should have just stayed in her office and let us work (and she had a very competant underling). Life imitates art in more ways than one.

35. Lost. Never seen it. Had no interest in it. Was popular and I guess critics liked it. During the time Lost was on there were so many people online saying how great the series is. So maybe this is bias on my part and missed out on the series although I can still watch it online, which I have no interest in (if a show is powerfully popular, I just eschew it).

36. I Love Lucy. Personally, I have never been a fan of Lucy and never thought of her as talented as most people. I wasnt a fan but she did do some inventive things. Her two later shows in the 1960's seemed to please the older generation at the time and was moldy by the time her last show was cancelled in 1974. Then she tried to do a new show in 1986 called Life of Lucy where she tried her humor, tricks and pratfalls to a 80's audience and we werent having it anymore. Life with Lucy was a cheaply made Miller-Boyett show and it really broke Lucille Ball that it was quickly canned. Lucy didn't need the money whatsoever, she was a multi-millionaire. She just wanted to perform but her act was out of date. Maybe she was bored in her mansion with nothing to do. This really broke her and she died three years later thinking people didnt like/love her anymore (which is sad because she was very inventive, and an excellent businesswoman in the fickle and hard entertainment business.) Again, I never liked Lucy but can praise what the woman did in the television industry.

I Love Lucy however was groundbreaking because Lucy and Desi wanted the shows on film instead of the old method, so that the series can be shown in reruns. This is partly what made them wealthy. But the show was boring and daffy Lucy at home and always wanting to be in Ricky's show and Ricky cursing her in Spanish. I didnt care for her shows but her and Desi started Desilu before the divorce (who took over the company after the divorce?), which produced some great shows in the 1960's and she was the one who got Star Trek on the air and is revered in the Trek community (I am a Trekkie/Trekker and lover her for this). Lucy was again, a great businesswoman who knew the business. She was like the old football player who could have ran an NFL franchise wonderfully, but didnt need to suit up to throw passes, if that makes sense. Imagine the retired Quarterback John Elway who runs the front office of the Denver Broncos deciding now around in his 60's to play again and butthurt he cannot anymore, no matter how rich he is. That was Lucy.

37 Arrested Development. This was an interesting concept of a disfunctional rich family on hard times with funny characters, stars Jason Bateman who has played most of his adult career in shows and movies as an exasperated, put upon middle aged man. Bateman is actually an excellent straight man. The kid who played his son went on as an early Generation Y mopy actor in some movies I was too old too see. Problem with Arrested that it was hilarious the first season and then Ok in the Second Season and stupid by the Third Season. Why, who knows? Maybe the writers were lazy or couldnt care less by then. There was attempts to bring the show back on another platform and they did but it didnt work. Jeffrey Tambor is a treasure, a fantastic funny actor who did drama also. I think Tambor got accused in stuff later on that he didnt deserve, but the man had a long run and if this silly list had the TOP 50 actors on TV, he should be on there. What is sad is that I am 55 with a full head of hair where I need a haircut every two months and he would probably give me millions to change places.

38. Hill Street Blues. One of the best, if not the best cop show of ALL TIME. This show should be in the Top 10 if not Top 15. Basically changed the genre of the cop show for future generations. The characters made the show wonderful. Delved into alcoholism, divorce, violence in the streets. It also had a lot of humor and love. This program started when I was a teenager and I watched this show religiously for seven years. I hated missing it (and this was sort of before VCR's were popular). The actors on this show should have gone on to better things and many didnt. The only actor who seemed to have done anything was Dennis Franz with NYPD Blue (another boring cop show of garbage). At least Betty Thomas had a successful directing career.

This series being 38th shows that Rolling Stone writers dont know what they are talking about.

39 Curb Your Enthusiasm. Curb is kind of funny. Larry David obviously makes the show work, with the general personality of the character which is hilarious and grating at the same time, poking fun and wise at the rich, elitist Hollywood community. Basically Larry making fun in his demented ways at the rich people It is also original in scope. My favorite show? No. Has David made me laugh at loud? Yes. The series also has a lot of hilarious actors, and I really like Jeff Garlin. Garlin is the voice if reason mostly.

40. The Good Place. Never seen this. Woman dies and goes into the afterlife with Ted Danson there and what? The critics liked it and people watched it so I guess it was OK.

41. BoJack Horseman. Never seen this. Have no desire to see it ever.

42. Battlestar Galactica. This was the newer show and never saw it because the original late 1970's ABC show sucked, and they decided to remake it?

43. Insecure. Never seen it. Probably another typical HBO show of constant four letter words, gratutitous nudity and shallow writing.

44. Late Night with David Letterman. I am biased about this because I have never liked David Letterman. To me he is unfunny, pretentious, full of himself. Dont get me started on Paul Schaffer. Ugh. Many people loved him and his show, and his show on CBS, and the TOP TEN was I guess funny to some. This comes from someone who loves Johnny Carson and the work he did. Johnny was the greatest of all time. I cannot say why Carson preferred Letterman over Leno. I liked Jay Leno. Not as funny as Carson but carried the show very well and kept a similar format. From most all people, Leno is a very nice, cordial person who appreciated his fanbase and people in general who would actually greet his audience and appreciated them. Letterman on the other hand was a juvenile smartass and Schaffer was a glory hound (unlike the humble and content Doc Severenson who is still alive) who had to have his stupid band involved in many numbers of guest musical performers. The idiotic exchanged between Dave and Paul. Pass. The only saving grace to Letterman was that he would have occasional guests like Paris Hilton who deserved his snark. Cher called Letterman an a-hole on air. Well deserved Cher, well deserved.

What is sad is that on his CBS show, the guy who replaced Letterman is volumes worse than him.

45. Columbo. This show was on in the 1970's but I never watched this as a child because my parents never watched it. The show was on for a long time and people seemed to like it. I liked Peter Falk. I had a friend in childhood and his father loved the show and loved that there was this unshaven, rumple coat wearing guy who didnt look outwardly that smart outwitting the so called smart criminals. The catchphrase of Columbo "I have one more question...." which doomed the criminal. I guess this was good TV for our parents sitting in their easy chairs in the 1970's drinking Scotch.

46. The West Wing. Never seen it. Like Martin Sheen. Maybe I just couldnt see him as a President, should have had his son Charlie Sheen who would have played similar the true like of the crackhead Hunter Biden of the current miserable adminstration. Allison Janey is hot however!

47. My So Called Life. Never seen it. Who wants to watch a bunch of teenagers with problems? The only problems they have is acne, homework and wanting to get laid. This was a series? At least it wasnt on HBO.

48. The Shield. I saw this a bit. The lead character was a crooked cop who was also a hero. Or something. The lead was a "nice cop" in a previous show who was now a "badass cop" in this show. Then we fortunately never see this guy again. Michael Chicklis or something. Played John Belushi in a film everyone hated. Fortunatly has never been heard of again.

49. Friends. Probably the most popular show of the 1990's to the early 2000's. Never seen it. Just didnt interest me. A host of "beautful people" in unreal situations. Some of them I guess had sex with each other, or something. This show was so popular I know Chandler, Joey and Jennifer. Jennifer had an interesting hair style. Other than that, couldnt say. A lot of online critics have said that these layabout beautiful people couldnt afford to live in New York City barely employed and live in huge apartments. This was on for years so people liked it. But people are idiots also.

50. Jeoprady. This show has been on most if not all of my life. I never cared for it although over the decades I have seen a few episodes. Why the stupid rule of answering "in form of a question"? That is lame. The show says that it gives the answer and the contestant has to make a question out of it. OK. I am sorry he is dead (seemed like a good guy) but Alex Trabek was annoying. He would do ridiculous voices and was pretentious when the people were wrong. I guess people have liked it since it has been on since Betty White's dead husband did it back in the 1960's when there was nothing better on. The game show that should be on here is The Price is Right, with a model molesting 130 year old Bob Barker bringing winning rubes up who somehow guessed the price of a vaccum cleaner to do some ridiculous contest, where most of the audience were the elderly, kids sick from school, inmates in prison, people in insane asylums or bored people waiting for their flight to Cleveland. As a matter of fact, some fat guy from Cleveland is hosting it now and people still watch it!

Rolling Stone is garbage, they have always been the worst source with regards to the ratings and rankings of anything. I've never paid any attention to them.

Yong Fang, you didn't see half the list. It goes to 100 shows. The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Carol Burnett Show, and Good Times are further down on this list. Also, Allen Ludden did not host Jeopardy. The original host was Art Fleming.

99 to 50. No, I have not seen a lot of these shows because some of them were too ridculous for me to spend my limited life on, and then there are great ground breaking shows who dont make the list because the writers of "Rolling Stone" cannot stop smoking the bong or snorting the sugar to be remotely intelligent.... (and still no Barney Miller, Sanford and Son, Gunsmoke or dozens of worthy candidates.....but here we go!)

99 OZ, A stupid horrible prison show which is pure fantasy and never happen in a prison in real life. More HBO trash. Rape, violence, nudity, bad writing and stupidity. An HBO series!


98 The Good Fight. A CBS show I have never seen a successor to a show called The Good Wife, another show I never had an interest in seeing (maybe the wives are fighting each other and Leonard's mother is the referee). Are people fighting here? About what? It was the Good Wife and now people are fighting each other? Did the husband cheat? Is Sheldon's mother fighting. I would like to see that old broad sweaty. The Big Bang Theory didnt make this list by the way.

97 The Odd Couple. An Ok show from a movie. A boring show from the late 1960's from a much better film with better actors. I will say that Tony Randall was by far the gayest heterosexual person ever. I dont know what you call a gay man who prefers women but he was it! Jack Klugaman's wife was a hoot too. She was on Match Game, usually half in the bag but it made her some coin. Her drunk left Jack at peace.

96 Rick and Morty. Some animation something or other I have never seen nor should anyone over 12.

95. Squid Game. This is about some survival Japanese contest not to get killed. I come to Japan to drink some Saki and watch some Sumo. Sit on the floor and enjoy myself. Get me a Bugogi Burger and fast food afterwards. Or maybe ironically some fried squid, because it is Japan and them Asians have strange food. The real Squid Game is Americans working countless hours away from their home and family to make their BILLIONAIRE bosses another dollar.

94. News Radio. Phil Harman's wife got on the cocaine and killed him. Spared the human race of another second of Phil Hartman. Is this a bad thing? Imagine 30 more years of that unfunny Canadian.

93. The Rockford Files. James Garner was pretty cool. Never needed a weapon, just his hands. He was private dick living out of a travel trailer with a concerned father. Great theme song which was actually a Top 40 tune.

92. The Muppet Show. A fantastic series which can be enjoyed by children and adults. Great writing and imagintive use of the muppets by their handlers. Many famous people were and wanted to be part of this series. This show should be in the Top 50, instead of HBO trash. One thing I do not understand, Kermit the Frog had no penis so how did he satisfy Miss Piggy? If Kermit became a Muslim would he have had to give her up?

91 The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Really, Rolling Stone? 91? Again Really?? About 40 points behind the asshat David Letterman? This shows how idiotic this list is. Johnny Carson was the best interviewer of all time from famous people down to the common man who was interesting. So . many people online have stated that THIS is the Greatest Host of All Time. The Greatest. John William Carson is the greatest talk show host of ALL TIME.

90 The Wonder Years. Another excellent show which should have been rated much, much higher.

89 The Carol Burnett Show. Should have been more highly rated than SNL.

88 The Crown. I have never seen this, this is about the Royal Family? Queen Liz was a great woman but her children, not so much. Drama about Princess Diana? What a drama queen she was. Sorry she died but jeez....quit your crying and complaing. Like Richard Nixon said, either go or get off the pot.

87 The Kids in the Hall. I guess if you like Canadian homosexual humor.

86. The Bob Newhart Show. A good 1970's series but not near as good as the Mary Tyler Moore show. If I was Bob would have shot the annoying dude from next door. The secretary and the dentist were OK. Bob Hartley sucked as a mental health doctor. Even he knew this in the end. Just had some maniacs he coudnt cure for money and our amusement. Emily was hot however. You can see shy Bob going in the morning before work going... "Hey Emily, can you and I, I mean you and me, can uh, yes, if we can maybe, have coitous this evening?" With Emily going "Sure, why not, as long as that annoying neighbor doesnt barge in our door!"

85 Orange is the New Black. Never seen this. Its about a woman's prison or something. Sounds like OZ but with women. I mean, did people watch this to watch one girl threaten another girl with death over two cups of soups and a candy bar? And this is entertainment?

84 Fargo. This was good for a couple of seasons and I got into it and it was a worthy successor to the film with good and interesting stories. The last season lost me and gave up. Had black guys when the show was Fargo. I guess the black people went "Hey, there is not a story about us!" I mean how tough was their mob boss when Will Smith slaps the crap out of him?

83 Im Alan Partridge. Never saw this and dont know what it is about. The only Partridges are a bunch of pre-teens and teenagers singing with their mother.

82 Party Down. Never saw this. Maybe it is about people partying down. If it is an HBO show, a lot of f-words, naked butts and gun shots.

81 It is Always Sunny in Philadephia. I have never seen this but from what I have read it is a couple of friends who pull cruel jokes on each other for our entertainment for our amusement. With Danny DeVito the second season. It's Philly and if someone screwed with someone else, dont you just pull out a piece and blow their head off? Maybe that is "Friends in Detroit" or something.

80 Band of Brothers. A bunch of American soldiers in WWII trying not not get killed. Plus liberating a German camp and magically having one dude who can speak perfect German.

79 Mr Show with Bob and David. Never seen this, wouldnt want to. Who was Mr. Show, Bob or David? Whoever was Mr Show wouldnt the other guy just quit and leave? Could Mr Show pull a rabbit out of his hat? Or tell bad jokes to a bored audience? With Saul Goodman and a guy who never took his clothes off. Or something. Just something the think was genius which is forgettable.

78 Sex in the City. Four women who would have sex with anyone, especially one with a wallet.

77 The Jeffersons. A Norman Lear show which was excellent with great players. Basically All In the Family but with rich black people. Great theme song that any American over fifty, even white people over fifty knows the word to. This show being so low again shows the ridiculously of this list. George blames the "honkeys" and "Weezy" rolls her eyes.

76 Justified. Never seen this. I guess someone was justified.

75 Frasier. I have oddly never seen this except for maybe an episode or two. I know it stars Fraiser who divorced the fine ass Lillith for some reason and moved to Seattle where for some reason his father and brother live, and the father sat on an Archie Bunker like chair in the middle of modern, rich people furniture. Plus there is an intelligent, shaggy dog and some English woman named Roz. I guess Frasier got laid over the ten years more than Seinfeld and his younger brother denies constantly that he isnt in the closet. But people loved the show, the critics love it, so why not?

74 The Honeymooners. At least this is a 1950's show. Had a fat Jackie Gleason married to a beautiful wife who could have done better, as in anyone better with a neighbor upstairs named Norton with even a better looking wife than Gleason somehow, and they have misadventures in 1950's New York while their wives call them stupid dumbasses. Comedy ensues. This was around 1955 when there was nothing else on and people risked their lives on their roofs to turn the atenna to watch this, and I Love Lucy.

73 Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Never seen this. Just too stupid. Just read the title, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What the hell is this, some girl named Buffy killing Vampires? How did Buffy even know this? Did she walk down the street and see some dude and went "This is a Vampire!" and then kills him? Are there so many Vampires in Buffy's hometown that she is killing them once a week? Where are the cops? Wouldnt they arrest Buffy? What the hell is she supposed to say? "That dude was a Vampire!!" Buffy the deranged, delusional serial killer.....of Vampires! This idiotic program was actually on for six years.

72 Good Times. A program that was groundbreaing and should have been in the Top 20 of this list. An almost realistic look of poor black, urban people and ther desire to rise above their station and leave. With the father James working multiple low wage jobs and his son JJ also working to make money for the home. A great show about inner city poverty and how to rise above it. JJ was the star and Esther Rolle could just suck on a lemon.

71 Better Things. I never saw this and have no idea what it is about.

70 SCTV. The Canadian version of Saturday Night Live but not near as good and quite lame. Had Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and John Candy who wanted to get the hell out of Canada to America and make some real money.

69 Chappelle Show. This show was funny and fantastic and Dave Chappelle is a worthy successor to Richard Pryor and this show was funny as (bleep) Chapelle was very original and creative. This was comedy. Chapelle doesnt seem to care too much about the ‘woke’ or their nonsense. Him and Bill Burr need to do a film together!

68 Fawlty Towers. A great British sitcome starring John Cleese probably not well known in the United States. This show was hilarious mostly because of the physical comedy of Cleese. Actually Cleese's character taught me how to open a tight wine bottle between my legs. Cleese's Fawlty character was so deranged and wonderfully stupid and how he interacted with everyone else. If you never seen it, see it.

67 NYPD Blue. I never really saw this besides an episode or two and found it boring. ABC said it woud be liberal on language but the unconstitutional FCC controls what could be said on network TV, which is why HBO has been so successful with butts and f-words. I never cared for Dennis Franz but look at the guy. He is no beauty. He is a great actor and because of this, his show works. But none of us remotely unless we are paid want to see Dennis Franz naked.

66 The Daily Show with John Stewart. John Stewart sucks, that's all we need to know about him.

65 Girls. HBO garbage. Never seen it, probably a couple of women talking about their private parts and the boyfriend if the week.

64 The Golden Girls. Probably one of the best sitcoms of the 1980's. This program was absolutely hilarious and managed to delve hilariously into the lives of four post menopusal women to positive effect. Fantastic one liners and humor. This was one of the best shows and sitcoms of all time with four talented players.

63 South Park. South Park sucks. Only idiots liked this show. It shows how many crude idiots live in America and the World that this garbage show is still on.

62 The Dick Van Dyke Show. This program should be in the Top 20 if not TOP 10 on this list. A very intelligent and adult program of the era. Launched the careers of both Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. The other actors like Rose Marie, Morey Amerstdam, Rob Reiner, a top rate series of all time. Again, this is 62 Rolling Stone?

61 The Underground Railroad. Never seen this except it is a program to try to make all white people guilty for slavery, so the "Woke" can yap "White Privlege! White Privlege!"

60 Taxi One of the greatest sitcoms of all time with probably the most talented actors of a sitcom of all time. I also love the theme song. A fantastic and hilarious show and everyone on that show made it work. It should have been on about two or three seasons longer than it did.

59 Key and Peele. Never seen it. Had two guys named Key and Peele.

58 Six Feet Under. Another HBO show I never saw. I guess it takes place in an undertaker office. A show about undertakers is original I will admit but wonder since it is HBO how many of the bodies and characters are naked, did anyone have sex in a box and were there less or more forty f-words an episode. Did anyone have sex with the dead? Its HBO, so edgy!

57 Russian Doll. I have no idea what this is. Something about time travel or something. Hopefully Russians arent time travelling because they would explode the Earth.

56 Community. NBC. Wow, this show sucked. Sucks is too kind for this waste of film. This was the worst major network sitcom of all time. There are no words on how awful and stupid Community was. Nothing. The only things worse than Community is child pornography and snuff films. How this horrible, idiotic, asinine program stayed on for five years is beyond me except that the viewing public are absolute morons. This crap even starred Chevy Chase who is actually hated worse than Adolf Hitler and Ted Bundy. The awfulness of this show is mind bogging.

55. Halt and Catch Fire. Never seen it. Never heard of it. At least it wasnt Community.

54 ER. I have never seen this show although it was on 15 years. Maybe I have missed out. Or maybe not. I have just learned from practice that any show with all beautiful people who dont break a sweat is worth avoiding. I mean how much can we watch a sweatless beautiful person save someone? Or have a beautiful person tell some parent that their child has three days to live. And this was on for 15 years? Also, House MD is not on this asinine list. Or St. Elsewhere.

53 The Office (UK) Ricky Gervais is funny. I liked him on the Academy Awards telling the spoiled millionaires and billionaires what absolute asses they are in the most slightly drunken English way possible. I have seen a couple of episodes and it was almost as good as the Office U.S. but was not on as long, but the UK show lent itself to the American series which made it good. Plus Gervias' boss character was about as haplees as Michael Scott.

52 Barry. Never seen it. I guess the main character is named Barry. Stars Bill Hader which means right away it sucks.

51. The X-Files. A lot of people liked this show and it was on for a long time. I never seen an episode of it. I cant judge it sucked because it was on for many years and it was probably an interesting concept, FOX kept it alive for over a decade so people watched it by the millions. But people are idiots who buy crap online from Amazon out of laziness , buy restaurant food from DoorDash, out of laziness, and will rent a strange room from Air BnB regardless that some Ted Bundy/Jeffrey Dahmer person might be renting it out, instead of just getting a hotel. People are so stupid now. This would have made a great X-Files episode, some idiot ordering baby back ribs from Applebees to become themselves baby back ribs to the serial killer they rented a spare bedroom from. Now that's entertainment!

Most of my favorites did not make Rolling Stone's list but i was surprised and pleased that they recognized Newsradio at #94.

I’m surprised that the people at Rolling Stone Magazine did not also include such “legendary” television shows on their list as “Cop Rock,” “My Mother the Car,” “Joanie Loves Chachi,” “The Closer,” and “Dance Fever.”

It would be helpful if Sepinwall had identified the criteria the shows were graded on to make his determination(s), as well as each shows grading within those criteria. Half the shows I never heard of, a quarter of them I remember liking, and a quarter of the I thought really sukked.....and he completely failed to mention several long running series that were very popular with audiences.

The list is what we should expect based on market the publication serves. 62% of the readership of Rolling Stone are under the age of 45, to these folks the world of television begins around 1985 and the list serves people who come into this discussion at that point. I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Dick Van Dyke, Twilight Zone are sprinkled in but they are there just to give the list an air of legitimacy.

There is a point in time somewhere between 1985 and 1990 where mixing shows before and after that point on the same list makes no sense because the business models are too different. To illustrate this point, the single Sopranos episode with the largest viewership had fewer people watching than the average number of viewers who tuned in to see Perry Mason in that series final season (the series ranked number 69 in its last season 65-66). The 100th episode of I Love Lucy was broadcast three years after the very first episode of that series, I Love Lucy ranked 37 on the list, ranking just two positions lower was Curb Your Enthusiasm, a series that broadcast its 100th episode 20 years after the first episode aired.

I agree with Yong about Letterman. Before his fame he was a weekend TV weatherman here. He was funny and not full of himself as he became with fame. His later persona reminds me of Goober when he grew a beard.

It's humorous if you look at Sepinwall's wikipedia entry. His father's occupation (IMO) lends valuable insight into how this list came to be.

It would be interesting to see a "best" list compiled using ratings. Community and 30 Rock and many others wouldn't even make the 100.

NewsRadio is my all-time favorite sitcom, and Phil Hartman was a big reason why. You may be glad he was murdered, but I'm not.
