Mindy Kaling almost took a job on Saturday Night Live during season 2 of The Office - and Dunder Mifflin would have been worse because of it.

She probably made as much money if not more doing The Office than being on SNL. I have read a lot of negative things about being on SNL, low pay for television, very high stress, long hours. But some people like Kate McKinnon was on the show for a decade, but she became a "star" and featured player who was paid a lot more than scale. SNL is for players who want to do their time there and then get on a TV show or hopefully "breakout" into being a star. To her leaving The Office and joining SNL would have been a step down.

Kaling isnt out loud funny, and to me sort of one dimensional. I think she has succeeded through some talent but that she is Indian/American and there are not a lot of Indian Americans in entertainment. There are a few, like the guy from Parks and Recreation and another guy who quit his TV job to work for Obama or something. Then there is that middle aged, older character actors who was on Seinfeld (owned a Pakistani restaurant), was the father of the Indian guy (another Indian!) on Big Bang Theory.

Good call her not taking the job. She would have been a waitress or friend. Not a star.
