English-Nigerian actress Cush Jumbo turns 37 today. Jumbo was born in London, and studied dance as a girl, before becoming interested in an acting career in her teens. She graduated from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and began working in English theater and television in the late 2000s.

Many American viewers probably know Jumbo best for her work on The Good Wife and its spinoff series, The Good Fight. She began appearing as attorney Lucca Quinn on the final season of The Good Wife, and was a regular in the same role on seasons 1-4 of The Good Fight.

She was an Olivier Award nominee as Mark Antony in an all-female cast of Julius Caesar in 2013, and again this year for starring as Hamlet in a gender-blind cast.

Jumbo has written and performed a one-woman play about Josephine Baker, titled Josephine and I, which won her an Evening Standard Theatre Award. She made her Broadway debut in 2014 in Jez Butterworth’s The River.

Jumbo’s first regular television roles were on the British medical drama Harley Street, and then on season 3 of the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood. She was a regular on the first series of Lip Service, and in 2012 was a regular on series 2 of the crime drama Vera. She returned to the latter series for the 5th and 6th series, before crossing the Atlantic to join the cast of The Good Wife.
