View Full Version : Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter opus 09-22-2022, 01:59 PM Reminder— special premieres tonight, ABC, 9pm ET I won’t get to it tonight, but I’ll be recording it. Dr. Thong 09-22-2022, 07:21 PM DVRing it. Can't wait to see this tribute to a comedy genius and legend. Thanks for all the great shows, Mr. Lear. MikeLutton 09-22-2022, 09:29 PM Watching it right now TVLegend 09-22-2022, 09:38 PM Watching it right now So am I. MikeLutton 09-23-2022, 12:23 AM what u all think, i thought it was all right icecream 09-23-2022, 12:52 AM I don't plan on watching. But Norman Lear did not create The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes like ABC claimed in their promo. :nonono: James 09-23-2022, 03:48 AM I was unaware that such a show was on. That's OK; I wasn't going to watch it anyway. BigManMike 09-23-2022, 06:58 AM I enjoyed it. Willbo 09-23-2022, 08:38 AM It was ok. I would have liked to have seen more interviews of the people that were on his original shows. Most of the one's that spoke I had never heard of. I was glad they panned the audience or we would have not seen any of the original stars. They could have at least had Marla had a scene where her and Norman talk. Or at least have interviewed her. Jackee was interviewed. I believe The Facts of Life and Different Strokes were from spinoff companies that Norman was involved with. MikeLutton 09-23-2022, 08:43 AM they Barley mentioned Sanford and Son Mario500 09-23-2022, 09:38 AM (note regarding what was believed to had been a certain TV program by this name ("Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter"): findings of certain language found to had vulgar (or profane), unnecessary, unamusing, and detrimental) stevea 09-23-2022, 10:52 AM (note regarding what was believed to had been a certain TV program by this name ("Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter"): findings of certain language found to had vulgar (or profane), unnecessary, unamusing, and detrimental) Unnecessary is a key word. Why take it into the gutter? Willbo 09-23-2022, 12:59 PM I was disappointed that Sanford and Son was not highlighted either. Really most of the special was a let down. Sanford and Son was a huge hit and deserved more recognition. They mentioned Mary Hartman because of the actress that is going to play her spoke. I did enjoy Tom Hanks but he was not even on any of his shows. I do not think Sally Struthers was there. BigManMike 09-23-2022, 05:11 PM So the people that were there that were on his shows, including shows produced by his production companies that he was not directly involved with, were Rob Reiner from All in the Family, Bernadette Stanis from Good Times, Marla Gibbs from The Jeffersons and 227, Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli from One Day at a Time, Lisa Whelchel, Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, and Nancy McKeon from The Facts of Life, Jackee Harry from 227, and Tony Danza from Who’s the Boss?. There was no one there from Sanford and Son, Maude, or Diff’rent Strokes. Besides Demond Wilson and Adrienne Barbeau, there’s not really too many other still living from Sanford and Son or Maude. Not many left from Diff’rent Strokes either, but I saw a post that Todd Bridges just got married this week so that may have been why he was absent. BigManMike 09-23-2022, 05:12 PM they Barley mentioned Sanford and Son That was odd. Also odd they never mentioned Diff’rent Strokes at all but all four Facts of Life girls were there and the song was even sung. MikeLutton 09-23-2022, 05:58 PM they did give sanford and son one mention toward the end when they was talking about theme songs Dr. Thong 09-23-2022, 07:13 PM I haven't watched it yet, but it seems that the choices of what shows to emphasize or what actors were featured were probably down to the producers of the show. Even though Lear didn't have a hand in shows like The Facts Of Life, Lear's company produced it and the producers probably figured more people would recognize it. Personally, I would rather they focused on shows he either produced, developed, and wrote. Dr. Thong 09-24-2022, 08:33 PM Two questions: 1. Why were The Facts Of Life girls referenced as characters that Norman Lear created or wrote, when he did neither? 2. Why was the show titled 100 Years Of MUSIC and Laughter. Lear was a comedy writer, director, and producer, not a musician? Yong Fang 09-25-2022, 04:22 AM Norman Lear was old when I was a child in the 1970's. Find the All In the Family retrospective he did in the 1970's and think, wow, this man is still alive in 2022. Lear hit it big with All In the Family, The Jeffersons and to a lesser but successful extent Good Times. He also had a large hand in Sanford and Son. But it seems to me that in the 1980's he became irrevelant (although the Jeffersons lasted until 1985). The times changed (America went more conservative in the 1980's) and for whatever reason Lear couldnt adapt, he made his money. He tried to put out stuff in the 1980's and 1990's but it got cancelled quickly. Dr. Thong 09-25-2022, 12:04 PM Norman Lear was old when I was a child in the 1970's. I think this was taped a while back. Maybe late July or early August. rusty spike 09-26-2022, 04:25 PM Norman Lear was old when I was a child in the 1970's. Find the All In the Family retrospective he did in the 1970's and think, wow, this man is still alive in 2022... My thoughts as well. Similar sentiments for the crabby miser character actor Charles Lane. Saw him on so many TV shows from the 1950s and 60s. He looked old then and then I learned he was still living at age 100 ~2005.
